أحب القرينة لم تصحب

1. The beloved companion did not accompany me,
And the rope of affection was not tied.

١. أَحَبّ القَرينَة لَم تَصحَبِ
وَحَبلُ اللُبانَةِ لَم يُقضَبِ

2. And grey hair has crept into my beard
With some ashen poetry.

٢. وَقَد وَخَطَ الشَيبُ في لِمَّتي
بِشَيءٍ مِنَ الشَعرِ الأَشهَبِ

3. And the madness of youth has evaded me
After its wondrous intoxication.

٣. وَأَقصَرَ عَنّي جُنونُ الشَبا
بِ بَعدَ غَرانِقِهِ المُعجِبِ

4. So if the reckless youths are disciplined
I do not see myself among them or play.

٤. فَإِن يَأَدُبِ اللَهوُ أَهلَ الشَبا
ب لا أُرى فيهِم وَلا أَلعَبِ

5. What is youth when old age comes
Without its company seeking it out?

٥. وَما لِلشَبابِ إِذا جالَ دو
نَ مَيعَتِهِ الشَيبُ مِن مَطلَبِ

6. By my life, their horses have frolicked
On the banks of the Tigris with difficulty.

٦. لَعَمري لَقَد أَصحَرَت خَيلُها
بِأَكنافِ دِجلَةَ للمُصعَبِ

7. And we returned to the Euphrates and its monk,
Which were the refuge of drinking.

٧. وَرَدنا الفُرات وَخابورَهُ
وَكانا هُما ثِقَةَ المَشرَبِ

8. On every hill you see a teacher
Who sifts like a lame camel.

٨. عَلى كُلِّ رَبوٍ تَرى مُعلِماً
يُصَرِّفُ كَالجَمَلِ الأَجرَبِ

9. For the radiant sun on his head
A ray shines like a planet.

٩. لِضاحِيَةِ الشَمسِ في رَأسِهِ
شُعاعٌ يُلَألِئُ كَالكَوكَبِ

10. If the hypocrite of Iraq is blamed one day
He is not admonished.

١٠. إِذا ما مُنافِقُ أَهلِ العِرا
قِ عوتِبَ يَوماً فَلَم يُعتَبِ

11. We approached him with little inspection
Of the absentee and the covered.

١١. دَلَفنا إِلَيهِ بِذي تُدرَأٍ
قَليلٍ التَفَقُّدِ لِلغُيَّبِ

12. With an army, whenever they descend to defecate
Even if the meadow is barren.

١٢. بِجَيشٍ مَتى هَبَطو غائِطاً
وَإِن كانَ ذا كَلَأٍ يَجدِبِ

13. And I did not say it out of fear, but
Punishment is due upon the sinner.

١٣. وَما قُلتُها رَهبَةً إِنَّما
يَحِلُّ العِقابُ عَلى المُذنِبِ

14. Nor asking, for with God is the best
Of requests and desires.

١٤. وَلا سائِلاً إِنَّ عِندَ الإِلَ
ه خَيرَ المَسائِلِ وَالمَطلَبِ

15. He gives death and gives life, so what can men hope for
Except to God from whom gifts are sought?

١٥. يُميتُ وَيُحيي فَما لِلرِجا
لِ إِلّا إِلى اللَهِ مِن مَرغَبِ

16. When will God carry the burden of a man
On an unpleasant mount he rides?

١٦. مَتى يَحمِلِ اللَهُ رَحلَ اِمرِئٍ
عَلى ظَهرِ مَكروهَةٍ يَركَبِ

17. And no man attains anything of his desire
If it is not written.

١٧. وَلَيسَ اِمرُؤٌ نائِلاً مِن هَوا
هُ شَيئاً إِذا هُوَ لَم يُكتَبِ
