1. Spirits or a morning of restitution
With debts not discharged by recovery
١. أَرواحٌ أَم بُكرَةٌ فَاِغتِداءُ
بِدِيونٍ لَم تَقضِهِنَّ الشِفاءُ
2. Had it stayed unvisited for a thousand years
Its long isolation would not have wearied it
٢. لَو ثَوى لا يَريمُها أَلفُ حَولٍ
لَم يَطُل عِندَها عَلَيهِ الثَواءُ
3. Does the passion subside or is the gaze lent
Above what has been lent to women
٣. أَهَواها يَشُفُّهُ أَم أُعيرَت
مَنظَراً فَوقَ ما أُعيرَ النِساءُ
4. Her face is bright, her figure delicate
A free woman who rends hearts
٤. واضِحٌ وَجهَها هَضيمٌ حَشاها
تَنكَأُ القَلبَ حُرَّةٌ حَوراءُ
5. When she smiles a coolness appears
Quenching thirst like water for the thirsty
٥. وَإِذا ما تَبَسَّمَت لاحَ مِنها
بَرَدٌ شافَهُ لِثاثٌ ظِماءُ
6. Its taste is the taste of water from a raincloud
Sweetened by a passing sprinkle
٦. طَعمُهُ طَعمُ ماءِ أَبطَحَ جَونٍ
جَعَفَتهُ سَحابَةٌ غَرّاءُ
7. In my love, her bracelets run too loose
An ungrateful swimmer afloat in blindness
٧. في حُبّي تَجري سَواريهِ بَرحاً
مُستَكِفٍّ يَعومُ فيهِ العَماءُ
8. Luck pushed her away, the scream of ostriches
Nothing cures her but solitude
٨. بَزَّها الأَمرَ أَيِّدٌ نَعِرُ النِيْ
لية لا يطبيهِ إِلّا الخَلاءُ
9. It leaves people behind in the wilderness when
Their pace slackens and they falter
٩. يَخلِفُ الناسَ في الفَلاةِ إِذا ما
حانَ مِنهُم صَيرورَةً وَاِنثِناءُ
10. A camel who never leaves the herd until
The herd and the ostrich come first
١٠. آبِلٌ لا يُزايِلُ الجزؤُ حَتّى
تَرِدَ الصهبُ قَبلَهُ وَالظِباءُ
11. Every landmark in which the springs
And summers of torrents flowed
١١. كُلَّ وَسمِيَّةٍ تَحَيَّرَ فيها
مِن سُيولِ الرَبيعِ وَالصَيفِ ماءُ
12. He covered it, glistening, which the winters
And gales had stripped bare
١٢. فَكَساها مُنَوَّراً رَشَحَتهُ
فَتَراتُ الشِتاءِ وَالأَنواءُ
13. Aged, rugged, when the sun rose
Meadows nestled in its shade
١٣. رَهِلٌ زَمَخرٌ إِذا الشَمسُ ذَرَت
خَضِلَت في ظِلالِهِ الأَنداءُ
14. Sing of it to a faded melody where
The warblers of its gardens trill
١٤. يَتَغَنّى بِها عَلى نَغِمٍ بالٍ
في ضَواحي رِياضِها المَكّاءُ
15. As the sweet singer became happy
Made joyful by intoxicating joy
١٥. كَتَغَني اللَذيذِ أَصبَحَ نَشوانَ
تُرنيه نَشوَةٌ عَشواءُ
16. Will you not cheer the sorrows with a tame, docile
Gazelle when the white desert appears
١٦. أَفلا تُسعِدُ الهُمومَ بِعَنسٍ
رَسلَةٍ حينَ تَعرُضُ البَيداءُ
17. Like a diving ostrich, with ears
Clearly visible in its zeal
١٧. كَالصَهابِيَةِ النَحوصِ تَلاها
واضِحُ الكاذِنينَ فيهِ اِنتِحاءُ
18. Molded of firmness and legs like
What the nimble flasks molded
١٨. صاكَ بِالصُلبِ وَالقَوائِمِ مِنهُ
مِثلَ ما صاكَ بِالقِداحِ الغَرّاءُ
19. Guaranteed is the essence of worries
That seeped through, a cheap hiding place
١٩. ضَمِنٌ آلَ مَن عُصارَةِ بُهمى
سَمَقَت فَهيَ رَخصَةٌ صَمعاءُ
20. So he is smeared with bitterness, a shirt
Worn thin by aggression
٢٠. فَهوَ مُستَدمِجٌ أُمِرَّ عَلى الضُمْ
ر خَميصٌ قَد لاحَهُ التَعداءُ
21. A year's torrents have flown off him
As they flowed off the shabby cloak
٢١. طارَ عَنهُ نَسيلُ عامٍ كَما
طارَ عَنِ العلجِ ذي القَميصِ القباءُ
22. And cleaned out rot until it left
Spaces that betrayal had emptied
٢٢. وَنَقى القُرَّحَ الصَلادِمَ حَتّى
تَرَكَت جُوَّةً لَهُ المُعَيراءُ
23. Withers exposed to him, hardened
Withered by the affliction he brings
٢٣. مُستَطارٌ لَهُ نَحائِصُ صُلبٌ
ذُبَّلٌ عِندَهُنَّ مِنهُ بَلاءُ
24. Taking turns striking him loyally
No protection shields his eyebrows
٢٤. يِتَعاقَبنَهُ بِضَربِ وَلاءٍ
لا يَقي حاجِبَيهِ مِنه وَقاءُ
25. With the plains of his cheeks and arms
Are clefts untouched by folly
٢٥. فَبِضاحي لُبانِهِ وَذِراعَيهِ
أَخاديدُ ما بِهِنَّ غَباءُ
26. Quick to gather shreds that keep falling
Off their hides in strips
٢٦. أَرِنٌ ما يَزالُ يَلقُطُ زُرّاً
مَعَهُ مِن جُلودِهِنَّ سَحاءُ
27. He fought the ground with his hooves until
The brought down prey captured him
٢٧. قاتَلَ الأَرضَ بِالسَنابِكِ حَتّى
أَخَذَت مِن نُسورِهِ المَعزاءُ
28. Complaining of exhaustion when he put forth effort
Their singing was torture to him
٢٨. يَتَشَكّى الوَجا وِمِنهُ إِذا جَدَّ
عَلى طَلعِهِ لَهُنَّ غَناءُ
29. He warded her off when she craved roses until
She overcame her desire, for the eaters
٢٩. ذادَها وَهيَ تَشتَهي الوَردَ حَتّى
غَلَبَت أَن تَقَرَّها الأَكلاءُ
30. With a crow, to a distracted state until
Her mothers became barren
٣٠. بِغُرابٍ إِلى أُلاهَةَ حَتّى
أَصبَحَت أُمَّهاتِها الأَطلاءُ
31. The stars came close to setting and each
Day at noon was marked by falling stars
٣١. وَدَنا النَجمُ يَستَقيلُ وَحارَت
كُلَّ يَومٍ ظَهيرَةٌ شَهباءُ
32. Whenever we left the shore of her passion
A persistent one with strong ropes pulled us back
٣٢. كُلَّما رَدَّنا شَطاً عَن هَواها
شَطَنَت ذاتُ ميعَةٍ حَقباءُ
33. They were tossed by indifference until
Betrayal itself denied them
٣٣. فَتَرَدَّدنَ بِالسَماوَةِ حَتّى
كَذَّبَتهُنَّ غُدرُها وَالنَهاءُ
34. It squeezed the one with deadly claws when
The split one turned away
٣٤. فَأَلَمَّت بِذي المُوَيقِعِ لَمّا
جَفَّ عَنها مُصَدَّعٌ فَالنَضاءُ
35. It then begged water for him and pelted him
With dust, making it his shroud
٣٥. ثُمَّتَ اِستَوسَقَت لَهُ وَرَمَتهُ
بِغُبارٍ عَلَيهِ مِنهُ رِداءُ
36. Soaring aloft like a swift ostrich
Or a flown arrow and supplies
٣٦. مُستَطيرٍ كَأَنَّهُ سابِرِيٌّ
أَو سَبيبٌ مُسَبَّرٌ وَمَلاءُ
37. Drawn to earnestness until the springs
And healers arrived
٣٧. دانِياتٌ لِلجِدِّ حَتّى نَهاها
مِن جَنوبِ البَضيعِ ماءٌ رواءُ
38. They quenched their thirst then turned away
Sated as the night came
٣٨. فَتَعَرَّضنَ ما يَرِدنَ كَما
تَعرِضُ عِندَ اِطِّلاعِها الجَوزاءُ
39. Al-Walid gifted me on a founding day
With a tithe in which are riches and beauty
٣٩. ساعَةً ثُمَّ اِستَغَثنَّ بِعَذبٍ
جُلِحَت عَن فَراضِهِ القَصباءُ
40. Onlookers reckon them to be a company
While they are leaders
٤٠. فَتَعَوَّ مِن فيهِ حَتّى إِذا ما
وَرَدَتهُ الفُصوصُ وَالأَطِبّاءُ
41. Growth filled their breasts, lambs and calves
Matured, as the noble ones calmed
٤١. فَقَضَينَ الغَليلَ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّينَ
بِلَيلٍ وَهُنَّ مِنهُ رَواءُ
42. We begot ewes that grazed the Huwah
Or yielded milk, they are fat sheep
٤٢. قَد حَباني الوَليدُ يَومَ أُسَيسٍ
بِعِشارٍ فيها غِنىً وَبَهاءُ
43. When the winnower touches them they shed
Milk from breasts like the Dalia
٤٣. يَحسِبُ الناظِرونَ ما لَم يَفِرّوا
أَنَّها جِلَّةٌ وَهُنَّ فِتاءُ
44. They presented themselves when mature
As the Gemini rise
٤٤. قَد نَما في ضُروعِها النَيُّ وَالحَملُ
تِماماً وَاِستَرخَتِ الأَصلاءُ
45. For a moment, then cried for fresh sweet water
Free of thorns and canes
٤٥. فَنَتّجنا قَناعِساً رَعَتِ الحَوَّةَ
أَو جَوشَ فَهيَ قُعسٌ نِواءُ
46. So mouths in them swelled until when
The sprouts and healers came
٤٦. وَإِذا حازَها المُرَوَّحُ حاكَت
عَن ضُروعٍ كَأَنَّهُنَّ الدِلاءُ
47. They healed their thirst, then turned away
Quenched as the night came
٤٧. وَيَكُرُّ العَبدان بِالمُحلَبِ الأَح
نَفِ فيها حَتّى يَمُجَّ السَقاءُ
48. Al-Walid did not choose it, but God
Made him a shepherd for the Muslims
٤٨. يَترُكُ الحَيُّ بِالعَشِيُّ رَغاها
وَهُمُ عَن رَغيفِهِم أُغنِياءُ
49. No commander deserves it, but for the Viceroy
Are all people's sacrifice
٤٩. أَمطَرنَني بِها يَمينُ فَتىً
أَروَعَ لا كَزَّةٌ وَلا شَهجاءُ
50. I do not see a troubled soul approach you
Without calumny and enemies dispersing
٥٠. نافِعٌ نَفعُهُ إِذا نيلَ مِنهُ
نائِلٌ فَهوَ رِفعَةٌ وَعلاءُ
51. If one of them strays from you
He drops and the corners take him
٥١. لا بَنىً غَيرُهُ فَمَدَّ لَهُ العُمرُ
بِمُلكٍ وَتَمَّتِ النَعماءُ
52. You are above what I say, but for you
Is my advice and praise
٥٢. سَيِّدٌ إِلَيهِ المُغيثُ إِذا ما
قيلَ يَومَ الفِخارِ أَينَ الغِناءُ
53. And for the people of his house from Quraysh
Their number and honor is vast
٥٣. سُؤدَدٌ غَيرَ فاحِشٍ لا تُدانِي
هِ تَجِبّارَةٌ وَلا كِبرِياءُ
54. God be pleased with them and chose them
Among His servants they are the purest
٥٤. غَيرَ أَنَّ الوَليدَ ما اِختارِهُ اللَهُ
وَلِلمُسلِمينَ فيهِ رِعاءُ
55. I see them as worthy for that and they are best
Whoever the sky shades
٥٥. لَيسَ يَجزي بِهِ أَميرٌ وَلَكِن
سائِرُ الناسِ لِلوَليِ الفِداءُ
56. They kept what God entrusted them with
Every nation has its custodians
٥٦. لا أَرى مُرهَقاً يَجيئَكَ إِلّا
خامَ عَنهُ الوُشاةُ وَالأَعداءُ
57. If He wills mercy for a people
Their Lord does what He wills
٥٧. وَإِذا زاغَ عَنكَ مِنهُم طَريدٌ
طاحَ ثُمَّ اِرتَمَت بِهِ الأَرجاءُ
58. He places authority with the wise ones among them
Surely the pious are the best of creation
٥٨. أَنتَ فَوقَ الَّذي أَقولُ وَلَكِن
لَكَ عِندي نَصيحَةٌ وَثَناءُ
59. Oppression despairs of being in a land
Where they are or coming from where they came
٥٩. وَإِلى أَهلِ بَيتِهِ مِن قُرَيشٍ
يَتَناهى عَديدُها وَالرِباءُ
60. The way of God and the Messenger, so there is no
Doubt or censure in their command
٦٠. رَضِيَ اللَهُ عَنهُم وَاِصطَفاهُم
وَلَهُ مِن عَبادِهِ أَصفياءُ
61. They set the Muslims straight until the way
Of truth and loyalty became established among them
٦١. فَأَرى أَنَّهُم لِذَلِكَ أَهلٌ
فَهُم خَيرٌ مَن تُظَلُّ السَماءُ
62. And the scales, after cheating, so people's
Merchandise passed justly between them
٦٢. حَفَظوا ماوَلاهُمُ اللَهُ مِنهُم
كُلَّ قَومٍ بِأَمرِهِم أَولِياءُ
63. Thus the servant in shabby clothes is given
His due, as is the foolish slave girl
٦٣. وَإِذا ما أَرادَ رَحمَةَ قَومٍ
رَبُّهُم فَهوَ فاعِلٌ ما يَشاءُ
٦٤. جَعَلَ الأَمرَ في ذَوي الرَأيِ مِنهُم
إنَّ خَيرَ البَرِيَّةِ الأَتقِياءُ
٦٥. يَيأَسُ الظُلمُ أَن يَكونَ بِأَرضٍ
هُمُ بِها أَو يَجيءُ مِن حَيثُ جاءوا
٦٦. سُنَّةُ اللَهِ وَالرَسولِ فَما في
أَمرِهِم ريبَةٌ وَلا لَحجاءُ
٦٧. قَوَّمُ المُسلِمينَ حَتّى اِستَقامَت
سُنَّةُ الحَقِّ فيهِمُ وَالوَفاءُ
٦٨. وَالمُوازينَ بِعدَ بَخسٍ فَجازَت
سِلَعُ الناسِ بَينَهُم وَالهِداءُ
٦٩. فَإِذا العَبدُ ذو العَبايَةِ يُعطى
حَقَّهُ وَالوَليدَةُ البَلهاءُ
