1. A dove coos sorrowfully atop the sand dunes
I wander about in longing though I do not confess

2. It reminds me of loved ones, between me and them
Its cooing repeats their abandonment so it wails

3. So it disquiets me beneath the little dunes
And I become when longing for them restless

4. Whenever I remember the loved ones in al-Liwa
Tears fall incessantly down the cheeks

5. Is there for me every day to its watering places
While they left it in strangerhood and departure

6. And is there for me in every day tears on the ruins
That gushed until it seemed blood in it poured

7. I yearn for the lightening of the frontiers when it appears
A lightening for us below the darkness gleams

8. Places of joy but since their felicity departed
My eyes are drowned in tears, wounded

9. Dwellings that time has destroyed and its soil
Lays waste, its blooming being wide and redolent

10. The clouds' drizzles watered it but if it withers
A bucket of tears its water-skin, dripping, will give it to drink

11. My friend why, when lightenings for us beneath the darkness appear
Does the gleam incite me, so I complain of

12. My passion and the lovers' plain unveilings
If the absenting of the frequenter in al-Liwa is prolonged

13. Death is but rest for the lover
And the most painful of that which the enamoured hopes for

14. Is to be deprived of his loved ones and well-wishers
Gently, with the distance between us so prolonged, for as long

15. A sick man and a healthy man are equal to him
He has, after the loves, a heedless eye

16. And a heart for separation wounded
Lying prostrate on the ruins after the encampment there

17. Its felicity the camel litters removed
Will the places convey unto me, and the desolate region Uyunam

18. Which roams there ashes and brambles
It inclines to the acacia trees of Udhayb when it turns

19. Aside from travelling, downcast and complaining
And I see those tents as though, when they appear

20. Below the sand-heap, the sand-heap
Tents that show me the portion, if I visited their people

21. Far from longing among them, and it is vast
Alas that time will not be generous with their nearness

22. And it still with loved ones stingy remains
Our loved ones, my brothers, as you know

23. Loyal, true to the covenant, resolute
Trustworthy, if kindred pulls his sympathy

24. He has no inclination to kindred, no leaning
Faithful, when the resolves of a people go astray

25. His light appears in the darkness of betrayal shining
The garden never showed in the thickets a finery

26. Adorned that the dripping of rain equals it diffusing
The breeze wanders in its corners as though for it

27. Among the chamomile's flowers a spirit
In the fairest sight, O night, whenever

28. A face like the dawn, smiling, appears to you
Looking at me from it, solace and delight

29. As the people of al-Basita, revelation, looked upon
So I come when I intend describing a wondrous one

30. And praising it has betrayed me, and panegyric
So speak to me, O neighbour, of your life, what is it

31. That inspired the eloquent tongue of poetry, articulate
Is it from the excess of that beauty I feared reverently

32. And became from composing verse incapable
