1. She is a gentle gazelle, so leave her be in a sanctuary to defy
The exposures, consoling the grieved or taking refuge in abundance
١. هي العيسُ دعها بي إلى حاجرٍ تُحدَى
طِلاحاً تؤمُّ الجِزعَ أو تنتحي نَجْدا
2. She grows helpless in distress, though she has sturdy forearms
Her palms dried out by drought, her darkness chilled
٢. تعجَّزُ في الموماةِ وهي ضوامرٌ
برى نَيَّها الاِيجافُ ظِلمانَها الرُّبْدا
3. The little fingers of her soft hands - whenever she complained of thirst
My tears became a fresh spring for her
٣. خوامسُ أنضاها الذميلُ فكلَّما
شكتْ ظمأً أمستْ لها أدمعي وِردا
4. She scatters roses in the wilderness, their gentle petals
Strung into a necklace behind her
٤. تُناثرُ في البيداءِ ورداً خِفافُها
وَينظِمُه الاِرقالُ مِن خلفِها عِقْدا
5. You who resided in the two slopes have violated
My pacts, and after you how many pacts have I kept
٥. أجيرانَنا بالرقمتينِ نقضتُمُ
عهودي وكم راعيتُ بعدكُمُ العهْدا
6. You left, so I have an eye that weeps for your separation
And you built, so I have only remoteness that cannot guide me
٦. نأيتمْ فلي عينٌ أضرّ َبها البكا
وبنتمْ فلي على النأْي لا يَهْدا
7. For the one whose passion's wounds do not hide
When the wind brings to me your scent, it chills me
٧. فمَنْ لغرامٍ ليس يخبو ضِرامُه
اِذا الريحُ لي بريّاكمُ بَردا
8. I see my love lost, and your presence guided me
Passion misled me, while your like brought me maturity
٨. ارى في ضَلالٍ الحبَّ وجدي بكم هدًى
وغيَّ الهوى العذريَّ في مثلكمْ رُشدا
9. By Allah, the echo of the two valleys and their separation
The south wind rang out their twisted branches
٩. فللهِ رندُ الواديينِ وبانُهُ
وقد رنَّحتْ ريحُ الصَّبا قُضْبَهُ المُلْدا
10. As if the slender curved branches, as they bend
Mimicked that echo and ringing
١٠. كأنَّ القدودَ الهيفَ وهي موائسٌ
أعرنَ التثنَي ذلك البانَ والرَّندا
11. The cold of the fresh ponds left me pining
Until my limbs could no longer endure the chill
١١. بَرودُ الرُّضابِ العَذْبِ أورثني الضنى
الى أن غدتْ أعضايَ لا تحملُ البَرْدا
12. I had been free before knowing passion
But when I knew love, I became its slave
١٢. وقد كنتُ حرّاً قبلَ أن أعرفَ الهوى
فلمّا عرفتُ الحبَّ صرتُ له عَبْدا
13. My loves, the distance has grown long and the gazelle
Throws itself leanly towards your land, deliberately seeking
١٣. أحبّايَ طالَ البعدُ والعيسُ ترتمي
عِجافاً بنا تأتمَّ ارضكمُ قَصْدا
14. As if compelled upon it the strike of one determined
To find comfort in your cheeks and passion in longing for you
١٤. كأنَّ عليها السيرَ ضربةُ لازمٍ
لتنضى به وخداً واضنى بكم وجدا
15. I still fear estrangement and distance from you
And who is there that has not known estrangement and remoteness?
١٥. وما زلتُ أخشى الهجرَ والبعدَ منكمُ
ومَنْ ذا الذي لم يلقَ هجراً ولا بُعدا
16. I blame my heart for its misguidance in passion
While I have a liver that burns with the fire of love, kindling
١٦. أعاتبُ في الأحبابِ قلبي ضلالة
ولي كَبِدٌ تَصْلى بنارِ الهوى وَقْدا
17. If only the blowing winds would carry from their direction
News of their return at the appointed time
١٧. فليت هبوبَ الريحِ مِن نحوِ أرضهمْ
تُبَلَّغُ عن ميقاتِ عودهمُ وَعْدا
18. May God grant me the passion of "when I say it has passed"
If its latter part is gone from me, restore what first appeared
١٨. ليَ اللهُ مِن وجدِ إذا قلتُقد مضتْ
اواخرُه عنّي اعادَ الذي أبدى
19. It was as if when it threw down the kernels
And what afflicts me, and from their love originated
١٩. كانيَ لمّا ألقَ مِن لاعجِ النوى
ومما أعانيهِ ومِن حبهمْ بُدّا
20. The aims of passion pledged my heart, smiling
Gracefully with it, let us enjoy the ponds' blueness
٢٠. مَرادَ الهوى عهدي بمغناكَ ضاحياً
أنيقاً به نجلو لواحظَنا الرُّمدا
21. I kiss a cheek in your dwellings, with prominent cheekbones
And I become emaciated between the slopes due to the like
٢١. أُقبَّلُ ثُغراً في ربوعكَ أشنباً
وأهصِرُ بينَ البانِ مِن مثلِه قَدّا
22. With it I lived a life of comfort, simple in its habits
And who can return it to me, if I could return it?
٢٢. قطعتُ به عيشاً رقيقاً اِهابُه
ومَنْ لي به لو أستطيعُ له ردّا
23. How has time changed your beauty and leaned away
The intimacy's whiteness in your solid bones to blackness?
٢٣. فكيف أحالَ الدهرُ حسنَكَ وانثنى
بياضُ التداني في عراصكَ مسودّا
24. And a box that warded off roses after
Their gaze had met with no barrier from the fever's people
٢٤. ودِعْلَبةٍ صدت عنِ الوِرْدِ بعدَما
تراءَتْ لها مِن دونِ أهلِ الحمى صدّا
25. It is as if I and it, when coyness came to an end
Raced to the four loved ones, hastily, cheek pressed to cheek
٢٥. كأنّي واياها وقد أمتِ الغَضا
الى أربعِ الأحبابِ مسرعةً وخَدْا
26. A shooting star and arrow amid the bends of its form
Have thrown into the gazelle's eyelids the horseman's heart, lone
٢٦. شِهابٌ وسهمٌ بين اعوادِ كُورِها
رمتْ بي حنايا العيسِ قلبَ الفلا فَردا
27. If I do not find in the love of a perfect gazelle
A beautiful passion, and my fortune did not help me to happiness
٢٧. لئن لم أجدْ في حبَّ جُملٍ على الهوى
جميلاً ولم تُسْعِفْ باِسعادِها سُعدى
28. I have an example in the ancients, youthfulness
Who attained for passion its sought goal
٢٨. فلي أسوةٌ بالأقدمينَ صبابةً
وقد وردوا للوجدِ منهلَه العِدّا
29. Separation and estrangement - how much have I endured with them
And how often before me they overwhelmed with their fires stronger men
٢٩. فراقٌ وهجرٌ كم تَجَلَّدْتُ مَعْهُما
وكم قَهَرا قبلي بنارَيهما جلْدا
30. And how many in the gatherings were the arrows of a glancing look
That penetrated after my inner organs, one blow after another
٣٠. وكم في المجاني مِن نبالِ لواحظٍ
فَرَتْ بعدَ أحشائي المضاعفةَ السَّردا
31. A catching glance, an affliction that brought me down, as if
The illness had contagiously passed to me from them, or aggressively
٣١. لحاظٌ مِراضٌ أنلَتْني كأنَّما
تَعَدَّى اليَّ السُّقمُ منهنَّ أو أعدى
32. And the cheeks' roses whose color shames roses
Tinged with the water of youth, delicately blooming
٣٢. ووردُ خدودٍ يُخْجِلُ الوردُ لونُها
مضرَّجةٍ أمستْ بماءِ الصَّبا تندى
33. When I intend to find for the sharpness of its moles
A peer, I see no equal or match for them
٣٣. اِذا رُمْتُ أن القى لِندَّةِ خالِها
نظيراً فلا مِثْلاً أراه ولا نِدّا
