- أفي حفر السويان أصبح قومناIs it over Hafar al-Suwayyan that our people have become
- أمسى غلامي كسلا قطوفاBy evening my boy was sluggish and slow-footed,
- إنا إذا قلت طخارير القزعIndeed we, when the wisps of scattered cloud grow scarce—
- تربعت في حرض وحمضThe herd grazed in spring among saltwort and salt-loving plants.
- جاريته بسابح ملظاظHer neighbor is swimming vigorously
- من صخرة كمنجنيق القذافFrom a rock like the hurler’s catapult,
- ومنهل وردته التقاطاAnd a watering place I reached by chance—
- يا أسم أسقاك البريق الوامضO Asmāʾ, may the flashing gleam water you,
- يشردن حتى تنقض المغارضThey bolt until their girth-places creak.
- ينشنه نوشاً بأمثال السطعThey reach for it, stretching out with necks like tent poles,
