1. As for Bilal, truly hardship
Has adorned all that starvation has left of him.

2. So he dipped his limbs in butter
As leather-merchants dip leather in oil.

3. Thus he oxidised the butter of perfume-merchants against us,
And so he awoke among us like an honoured chieftain.
