1. My eyes shed tears generously, and gladden
The sons of a womb that Zayd would never dishonor,

2. Except for Zayd to be generous with a teardrop
Weeping over the grave, grieving over an affliction to calm.

3. You would not find in any land the face of Zayd
Except that Zayd's face would adorn it.

4. By the life of the mourner mourning, a calamity has befallen
The people and singled out Qusayy who assembled them.

5. And how can we find the likes of Zayd and his grandfather—
Conveyor of the signs of guidance and their trustee?

6. Generosity and benevolence were his comrades,
So he left the world devoid of its benevolence and gentleness.

7. In the early morn did Lu’ayy son of Ghalib
Pelt his grave mound with clods of earth over a man he did not dishonor.

8. Al-Gharr the Bani Tamim tribesman wept over parting with him—
As did Ukaz, Bat’ha plain, As-Safa, and their landmarks.

9. Say to her whose voice rises above all people:
“May Allah not help whoever does not help her!”

10. And a widow who weeps, her dress rent,
Over him, so she came disheveled, bleary-eyed.

11. Had she understood what people understand, the standards
Of desolation would have bowed down weeping.

12. The mourner eulogized him for us, so we became as though
We saw the land contain a sign—its time had come.

13. Our feet faltered and the backs and bellies
Of its mounts tossed us to and fro.

14. The people of intellect among us came
Seeing leftwards after its right had departed.

15. May Allah water with a drink of mercy a pit
Sheltering Zayd, its soil and its clay!
