1. What I lost from you is enough for me, though
Only the unjust squander rights once held.

2. The work of one who made you his ally
Rewarded others, entrusted them instead.

3. An opinion too stingy thwarted your good;
A soul where goodness narrowed its breadth.

4. When it urged you to good, you obeyed,
Yet when it hinted at evil, compliance met.

5. Were it not for defiant men whose joy
In you and kin I do not like to end,

6. Your misstep would mean, if sandals slipped,
Parting ways unable to make amends,

7. Whenever I bear that, my eyes will turn
To you—I do not like their glance to offend.

8. If dreams repeal our brotherhood’s writ,
Who can repeal the hearing of their send?

9. I will forbid you—summary counsel—
With wisdom's verses that soothe their ache,

10. Whoever draws near seeking my verse
Draws near its recitation and will partake,

11. When an astute youth is approached with verse,
Leave rhymes' enclosure open in his wake.
