1. As if I was destined for ruin one evening,
At the foot of bare hills, waiting for rain.
١. كَأَنّي مُوفٍ لِلهَلاكِ عَشِيَّةً
بِأَسفَلِ ذاتِ القِشعِ مُنتَظِرَ القَطرِ
2. While you all wear new clothes after
I was banished in rags to the desert wilderness.
٢. وَأِنتُنَّ تَلبِسنَ الجَديدَةَ بِعدَما
طُرِدتُ بِطَيِّ الوَطبِ في البُلقِ وَالقَفرِ
3. As if when I said farewell I was packing goods -
To take the camel litters and camel necks.
٣. كَأِنَّ الَّذي قُلتُنَّ أَعدِد بِضاعَةً
لِتَأخُذَ بَيضاءَ التَرائِبِ وَالنَحرِ
4. As if strings of pearls hung around
The neck of a beautiful woman, lost, by a thorn tree or lotus tree.
٤. كَأَنَّ سُموطَ الدُرِّ مِنها مُعَلَّقٌ
بِجَيداءَ في ضالٍ بِوَجرَةَ أَو سِدرِ

It would be a statement, yet I am no informant,
٥. تَكون بَلاغاً ثُمَّ لَستُ بِمُخبِرٍ
إِذا وَدِيَت لي ما وَديتُنَّ ما أَمري
