1. Why do you withhold the pen
While the land is fertilized with blood

١. فِيمَ احْتِبَاسُكَ لِلْقَلَمْ
وَالأَرْضُ قَدْ خُصِبَتْ بِدَمْ

2. Straighten its sharp teeth
In the chest of those gone astray

٢. سَدِّدْ قَوِيمَ سِنَانِهِ
فِي صَدْرِ مَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَقِمْ

3. Alert the sleeping nations
So its deeds bring life to glory

٣. نَبِّهْ بِهِ أُمَمَ الزَّوَا
لِ فَعَلَّهُ يُحْيي الرُّمَمْ

4. Is this not the day of justice?
The oppressed stand, so stand

٤. أَليَوْمَ يَوْمُ القِسْطِ قَدْ
قَامَ الأُولَى ظُلِمُوا فَقُمْ

5. Between those who fight
And us there is kinship of revenge

٥. بَيْنَ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُو
ن وَبَيْنَنَا قُرْبَى النِّقَمْ

6. Whoever defiles our enemies
To them we are tied by blood

٦. مَنْ يَسْتَبِحْهُ عَدُّوُّنَا
فَلَهْ بِنَا صِلَةُ الرَّحِمْ

7. No safety for the sleeping nation
Tomorrow it may be destroyed

٧. لا أَمْنَ لِلْبَلَدِ الأمِي
نِ وَفِي غَدٍ قَدْ يُهْتَضَمْ

8. Say, O prince of poets, does obsession
Or lofty ambitions bind you?

٨. قُلْ يَا فَتَى الشُّعَرَاءِ قُلْ
لَبَّتْكَ أَمْ عَصَتِ الهِمَمْ

9. I call the taverns to responsibility and integrity
Each rises to their duty, and whoever lags behind, let him sleep

٩. أُدْعُ المَخَامِيرَ الشِّبَا
عَ إِلَى الحَفِيظَةِ وَالذِّمَمْ

10. We live in ignorance though honor lived
And we have not

١٠. كُلٌّ يَقُومُ بِمَا عَلَيْ
هِ وَمَنْ تَثَاقَلْ فَلْيَنَمْ

11. When our time ends
And we move from slumber to annihilation

١١. نِمْنَا عَلَى جَهْلٍ وَقَدْ
عَاشَ الكِرَامُ وَنَحْنُ لَمْ

12. When we rise again after it
It will be like a fanciful dream

١٢. فَإِذَا انْقَضَتْ آجَالُنَا
فَمِنَ الرُّقَادِ إِلَى العَدَمْ

13. To whom are the tents? Not on a mountain
For an eagle to perch

١٣. وَإِذَا بُعِثْنَا بَعْدَهَا
فَكَأَنَّهَا رُؤْيَا حُلُمْ

14. A tent rose over them
Solitary between tents

١٤. لِمَنْ الخِيَامُ فَمَا عَلَى
جَبَلٍ لِنَسْرٍ مُعْتَصَمْ

15. With it a flag atop a flag
An elder of high morals planted it

١٥. شَرُفَتْ عَلَيْهَا خَيْمَةٌ
وَتَفَرَّدَتْ بَيْنَ الخِيَمْ

16. One who if touched would roar
His weapon ever sharpened

١٦. بَادٍ بِهَا عَلَمٌ عَلَى
عَلَمٍ أَقَامَ بِهِ عَلَمْ

17. Gashing whatever it strikes
Blessed among his compatriots

١٧. شَيْخ مِنَ الصَّوَّانِ مَنْ
يَمْسَسْهُ يَفْتَدِحِ الضَّرَمْ

18. Like an army of noble breed
An army but of chivalry, courage and zeal

١٨. مُتَعَوِّدٌ قَهْرَ العِدَى
كَالنُّورِ فِي كَشْفِ الظُّلَمْ

19. Its morals distributed among them
How excellent is that which is divided

١٩. لانَتْ عَرِيكَتُه لِطُو
لِ مِرَاسِهِ وَقَسَا الأَدَمْ

20. This leader and the like of him
Give pride to the greatest of men

٢٠. تَتَثَلَّمُ الآفَاتُ مِنْ
هُ بِصَارِمٍ لا يَنْثَلِمْ

21. Mightier than feeble kings
Who can not counsel him

٢١. وَيَرِقُّ مَشْحُوذاً بِهَا
فَإِذَا أَصَابَ فَقَدْ قَصَمْ

22. Never made greater but by wealth
And arrogance, not service

٢٢. بِمُبَارِكٍ فِي مَعْشَرٍ
كَالجَيْشِ مِنْ نَسْلٍ كَرَمْ

23. He waits looking out for the enemy
Like food eyed by the covetous

٢٣. جَيْشٌ وَلَكِنْ لِلْمُرُو
ءةِ وَالشَّجَاعَةِ وَالشَّمَمْ

24. His nation rallies around him
Like cubs around a fierce lion

٢٤. مَقْسُومَةٌ أَخْلاقُهُ
فِيهِمْ وَنِعْمَ المُقْتَسَمْ

25. A nascent nation
Its history among nations

٢٥. هَذَا الرَّئِيسُ وَمِثْلُهُ
فِي النَّاسِ يَعْظُمُ مَنْ عَظُمْ

26. They built no edifice
With might that went unremembered

٢٦. وَمِنَ المُلُوكِ أَعِزُّةٌ
لا يَصْلُحُونَ لَهُ حَشَمْ

27. They defended their independence
And their lands from threats

٢٧. لَمْ يَكْبَرُوا بِسِوَى الغِنَى
وَالكِبْرِيَاءِ عَنِ الخَدَمْ

28. Their livelihood made lawful to seekers
And their homeland inviolable

٢٨. قَدْ قَامَ يَرْتَقِبُ العِدَى
كَالزَّادِ يَرْقُبُهُ النَّهِمْ

29. Purity their pillars, souls their dwellings
Their mishap most bitter

٢٩. وَتَحُفُّ أُمَّتُهُ بِهِ
كَصِغَارِ لَيْثٍ فِي الأُجُمْ

30. Oh day of looting Dhi Ghoroor
When nations thought them cattle

٣٠. هِيَ أُمَّةٌ مُسْتَحْدثٌ
تَارِيخُهَا بَيْنَ الأُمَمْ

31. A wolf who fancied them sheep
Grazing safe in their enclosure

٣١. مَا شَيَّدُوا مِنْ هَيْكَلٍ
بِالبَأْسِ شَأْواً لَمْ يُرَمْ

32. A thief who dreamt of spoils
Yet found only misery

٣٢. ذَادُوا عَنِ اسْتِقْلالِهِمْ
وَدِيَارِهِمْ ذَوْدَ البُهَمْ

33. They hunted the transgressor and his ilk
Like hunting vicious predators

٣٣. أَرْزَاقُهُمْ حِلّ لِطَا
لِبِهَا وَمَوْطِنُهُمْ حَرَمْ

34. And meted him greatest humiliation
So is the requital of villains

٣٤. شُمٌّ رَوَاسِيهِمْ وَأَنْ
فُسُهُمْ وَمَعْطَسَهُمْ أَشَمْ

35. Then they resolved to execute him
But pardoned him instead

٣٥. يَا يَوْمَ غَارِةِ ذِي الغُرُو
رِ وَقَدْ دَهَاهُمْ مِنْ أَمَمْ

36. How excellent is such chivalry
If not for callousness and regret

٣٦. ذِئْبٌ تَوَهَّمَهُمْ نِيَا
ماً فِي الحَظِيرَةِ كَالنَّعَمْ

37. Who are these morbid clouds
Diminishing the sterility of ages?

٣٧. وَإِذَا بِهِ فِي أَسْرِهِمْ
شَاةٌ وَشِيعَتُهُ غَنَمْ

38. In their haughtiness is their gait
And the tread of their feet atop the banner

٣٨. لِصٌّ تَوَهَّمَ مَغْنَماً
وَإِذَا العُقُوبَةُ مَا غَنِمْ

39. She emerged from her lair to them
Battered without a veil

٣٩. صَادُوا المُسِئَ وَرَهْطَهُ
صَيْدَ البَوَاسِقِ وَالرَّخَمْ

40. Her parent Azrael, her kin a vicious people
Coveting those who meet destruction

٤٠. وَجَزَوْهُ بِالذَّلِّ الْعَظِي
مِ كَذَاكَ يُجْزَى مَنْ لَؤُمْ

41. How will great men pass as warning goes unheeded
And foundations crumble?

٤١. ثُمَّ ارْتَأَوْا أَنْ يَقْتُلُو
هُ بِصَفْحِهِمْ عَمَا اجْتَرَمْ

42. Evil is the messenger of misery
And ominous is the mother of misfortunes

٤٢. نِعْمَ المُرُوءةُ لَوْ جَنَتْ
غَيْرَ الإِسَاءةِ وَالنَّدَمْ

43. That is a dishonest war
And the breach of sanctity

٤٣. مَنْ هَذِهِ الزَّلاَّءُ قَدْ
أَخْنَى بِهَا طُولُ العَقَمْ

44. Woe to the strong one today
Against that weak one who attacked

٤٤. فِي السُّحْبِ هَامَتُهَا وَوَ
طْيءُ رِجْلِهَا فَوْقَ العَلَمْ

45. Do you see the arrogant
Retreating, fraudulent in all his enormity?

٤٥. بَرَزَتْ لَهُمْ مِنْ خِدْرِهَا
مَهْتُوكَةً لَمْ تَلْتَثِمْ

46. Receding though never accused of cowardice
And the sons of the land flocking where he withdrew

٤٦. عِزْرِيلُ أَوَلَدَهَا وَمِنْ
سُفَّاحِهَا القَوْمُ الغُشُمْ

47. Like birds flushed in panic
And snakes slithering into burrows

٤٧. تَرْنُو لِمَنْ غَشِيَ الوَغَى
وَلَهَا بِأَكْلِهِمُ وَحَمْ

48. Like wolves vanished in darkness
And whales delved into depths

٤٨. تورِي نَوَاظِرُهَا اللَّظَى
وَتَسِيلُ مِنْ فَمِهَا الحُمَمْ

49. On Thursday they walked like one
Toward the fated encounter

٤٩. وَلَهَا ذَوَائِبُ مُرْسَلا
تٌ لِلْكَرَائِهِ وَالزِّيَمْ

50. Ferocity with no despair
And zeal for battle with no fatigue

٥٠. شِبْهُ الْعُثَانِينِ الجَوَا
رِفِ فِي العَصِيبِ المُدْلَهِمّْ

51. No fear of annihilation
Nor weakness of soul or boredom

٥١. أَنَّى تَمُرُّ فَنَابِغٌ
يَصْدَى وَرَاسٍ يَنْهَدِمْ

52. But for the honor of whoever
Would avenge whichever was destroyed

٥٢. بِئْسَتْ رَسُولُ الشَّر تِلْ
كَ وَبِئْسَ وَالِدَةُ الغُمَمْ

53. Let them stand firm and renew
Their struggle against them intensely

٥٣. تِلْكُمْ هِيَ الحَرْبُ الزَّبُو
ن وَذَلِكُمْ هَتْكُ الْحُرَمْ

54. This is an encounter to be muffled
In a fire stoked to rage

٥٤. وَيْلَ القَوِيِّ اليَوْمَ مِنْ
ذَاكَ الضَّعِيفِ وَقَدْ هَجَمْ

55. Behold the hail of embers
Like blood pouring from veins

٥٥. أَتَرَى نُكُوصَ المُعْتَدِي
مَلأَ الْفَلا مِمَّا ضَخُمْ

56. And bombs erecting themselves
To consume the marrow of armies

٥٦. مُتَقَهْقِراً وَهْوَ الَّذِي
فِي بَأْسِهِ لا يُتَّهَمْ

57. Blind yet discerning in fray
The paths of the enemy to shred

٥٧. وَوُثُوبَ أَبْنَاءِ الدِّيَا
رِ بِهِ إِلَى حيث انْهَزَمْ

58. Gripped tight until
Their jaws meet what they gnaw

٥٨. كَالطَّيْرِ إِسْفَاقاً وَكَال
حَيَّاتِ زَحْفاً فِي الأَكَمْ

59. They pounce with frowns
Until their bite brings death then smile

٥٩. كَالذئْبِ لَمْحاً فِي الدُّجى
كَالحُوْتِ خَوْضاً فِي العَرِمْ

60. Behold their women thronged
Like steadfast banners fluttering

٦٠. يَمْشِي الخَمِيسُ كَوَاحِدٍ
فِي السَّيْرِ نَحْوَ المُلْتَحَمْ

61. A forest serenaded
By hot sighs, though it knows no shame

٦١. بَأْسٌ بِلا يَأْسٍ وَحَزْ
مٌ فِي النزَالِ بِلا لَمَمْ

62. Behold children pelted with stones
As they play with toy arrows

٦٢. لا خَوْفَ تَهْلُكَةٍ وَلا
عَنْ ضَعْفِ نَفْسٍ أَوْ سَأَمْ

63. And old men soaked by their blood
The reckless spared them no mercy

٦٣. لَكِنْ لِعِزَّةِ مَنْ يَكُو
نُ بَدِيلَ أَيِّهِمُ ارْتَطَمْ

64. Behold their dead heaped
Each like a crumbling palace

٦٤. وَلْيَثْبُتُوا وَيُجَدِّدُوا
نَجَدَاتِهِمْ مِنْهُمْ بُهَمْ

65. Behold their horsemen provoked
To assault like violent winds

٦٥. هَذَا لِقَاءٌ يُوغتُوا
فِيهِ بِنَارٍ تَحْتَدِمْ

66. And infantries like a wall
Marching in step to the drum

٦٦. أُنْظَرْ إِلَى هَطْلِ الْجِمَا
رِ كَأَنَّهُ وَكْفُ الدِّيَمْ

67. The coming and going
By order visible and concealed

٦٧. وَإِلَى القَنَابِلِ تَسْتَقِي
مُهَجَ الجُيُوشِ وَتَلْتَهِمْ

68. Those who stand and those who kneel
Those who attack and those who spare

٦٨. عَمْيَاءُ تُبْصِرُ فِي الوَغَى
سُبُلَ العَدُو فَتَخْتَرِمْ

69. Those who fall to the ground
And those who climb the summits

٦٩. مَضْمُومَةُ الْفَكَّيْنِ حَتَّى
تَلْتَقِي مَا تَلْتَقِمْ

70. Hear the neighing of their horses
Pawing the earth impatient for combat

٧٠. تَنْقَضُّ وَهْيَ عَوَابِسٌ
حَتَّى تُمِيتَ فَتَبْتَسِمْ

71. And the roaring unsheathed swords
Among destructive weaponry

٧١. أُنْظُرْ جُمُوعَ نِسَائِهِمْ
مِيساً كَبَانَاتِ العَلَمْ

72. And thunderbolts like
The miracles of Moses long ago

٧٢. غِيدٌ يُغَازِلُهَا الرَّصَا
صُ وَهَلْ لَهُ أَنْ يَحْتَشِمْ

73. And the growling of lions in iron
And their cubs disciplined for war

٧٣. أُنْظَرْ إِلَى الأَطْفَالِ تَحْ
ذِفُ وَهْيَ تَلْعَبُ بِالرُّجُمْ

74. Hear drums almost burst
From the clashes or deafening

٧٤. وَإِلَى الشُّيُوخِ تَخَضَّبَتْ
بِدِمَائِهَا مِنْهَا اللَّمَمْ

75. Hear the moaning earth
Aggrieved by all it has seen

٧٥. أُنْظَرْ إِلَى صَرْعَاهُمُ
كُلٌّ كَصَرْحٍ مُنْهَدِمْ

76. The few prevailed over the many
And pardoned them instead of revenge

٧٦. أُنْظَرْ إِلَى فُرْسَانِهِمْ
ثَارُوا كَأَرْيَاحٍ هُجُمْ

77. But however the wretched gloat at first
They will regret the conclusion

٧٧. وَإِلَى المُشَاةِ كَأَنَّهُمْ
سُورٌ يَسِيرُ عَلَى قَدَمْ

78. Stroll in their villages and you see
No despair of mothers or fathers

٧٨. وَالذَّاهِبينَ الآيِبِ
ينَ بِمَا بَدَا وَبِمَا رُسِمْ

79. No starving wanderers
Faces contorted in pain

٧٩. وَالقَائِمِينَ الجَاثِمِينَ
وَمَنْ يَكُرُّ وَمَنْ يَهُمّْ

80. No miscarrying pregnant women
From stress or illness

٨٠. وَالهَابِطِينَ إِلَى الثَّرَى
وَالصَّاعِدِينَ إِلَى القِمَمْ

81. No orphans begging
To suckle, destitute

٨١. وَاسْمَعْ صَهِيلَ خُيُولِهِمْ
مُتَحَفِّزَاتٍ لِلقحَمْ

82. And disasters between them
Sow like torrents of rain

٨٢. وَزَمَاجِرَ الخُرْسِ الضَّوَا
رِي مِنْ مُعِدَّاتِ الأُزُمْ

83. Tour the mines, how much anguish
And how many calamities arose!

٨٣. وَالرَّاعِدَاتِ كَأَنَّهَا
صَعَقَاتُ مُوسَى فِي القِدَمْ

84. Gaping mouths and swollen bellies
After sucking the good life dry

٨٤. وَزَئِيرَ آسَادِ الحَدِي
دِ وَزَجْرَ فِتْيَتِهَا الهُضُمْ

85. Oh, if only they were misfortunes
So many grudges befell those blessings!

٨٥. وَاسْمَعْ صَدَى الأَطْوَادِ تُو
شِكُ أَنْ تُصَدعَ أَوْ تُصِمّْ

86. With bitterness for oppressors
I have cursed them as far as my tongue allows

٨٦. وَاسْمَعْ أَنِينَ الأَرْضِ وَا
جِفَةً أَسىً مِمَّا تَجِمْ

87. Let us mourn those who died
Among them no coward fled

٨٧. غَلَبَ الْقَلِيلُ عَلَى الْكَثِيِ
رِ وَعَفَّ عنَّهُ فَمَا انْتَقَمْ

88. And let us console the frail
Their misery pitied by the mighty

٨٨. لَكِنَّهُ مَهْمَا يَفُزْ
بُدْءاً يَسُؤْهُ المُخْتَتَمْ

89. A shocking sight the just witnessed
As if their reason was an idol

٨٩. طُفْ فِي قُرَاهُ فَمَا تَرَى
مِنْ يَأْسِ كُل أَبٍ وَأُمْ

90. They saw wolves so attempted
To drive them back through law

٩٠. وَمِنَ الجِيَاعِ الهَائِمِي
ينَ عَلَى الوُجُوهِ مِنَ الأَلَمْ

91. Where is justice to whom disputes
Between nations are referred?

٩١. وَمِنَ الحَبَالَى المُجْهَضَا
تِ مِنَ التَّضوُّرِ وَالسَّقَمْ

92. Where is truth, where is redress
Of the innocent when oppressed?

٩٢. وَمِنَ الْيَتَامَى فِي المُهُو
دِ عَلَى المَجَاعَةِ تَنْفَطِمْ

93. Who supports the weak when he complains
And challenges the strong when he oppresses?

٩٣. وَمِنَ الْكَوَارِثِ بَيْنَهُمْ
تَسْتَنُّ كَالوَبْلِ الرَّذَمْ

94. Oh those who lead astray, turn back
Those who clung to you have failed

٩٤. وطُفِ المَنَاجِمَ كَمْ أسىً
مِنْهَا وَكَمْ خَطْبٍ نَجَمْ

95. Do not busy your minds
With rights of a people violated

٩٥. مَفْغُورَةُ الأَفْوَاهِ طَا
وِيَةُ الحَشَى بَعْدَ البَشَمْ

96. They swore if unsuccessful
None would survive

٩٦. يَا لَيْتَهَا غُفُلٌ فَكَمْ
نِقَمٍ تَلَتْ تِلْكَ النِّعَمْ

97. So leave them to live or perish
Truly by this oath

٩٧. سُخْطاً عَلَى الظُّلاّمِ أَقْ
دَرَ مَا نَكُونُ عَلَى الكَلِمْ

98. Take conscience, enshroud it
In what is precious of your morals

٩٨. وَلْنَبْكِ مَنْ مَاتُوا وَمَا
مِنْهُمْ جَبَانٌ مُنْهَزِمْ

99. Consign it to the earth when dead
And say no mercy on it

٩٩. وَلْنَرْثِ لِلضُّعَفَاءِ يُفْ
نِيهِمْ قَوِيٌّ مُغْتَشِمْ

١٠٠. خَطْبٌ رَآهُ المُنْصِفُو
نَ كَأَنَّ أَحْيَاهُمْ صَنَمْ

١٠١. رَأَوُا الذئَابَ فَحَاوَلُوا
أَنْ يَدْرَأُوهَا بِالحِكَمْ

١٠٢. أَيْنَ الْقَضَاءُ إِلَيْهِ أَرْ
بَابُ المَمَالِكِ تَخْتَصِمْ

١٠٣. أَيْنَ الْحَقِيقَةُ أَيْنَ إِنْصَ
افُ الْبَرِيءِ إِذَا ظُلمْ

١٠٤. مَنْ لِلضَّعِيفِ إِذَا شَكَا
وَعَلَى الْقَوْيِّ إِذَا أَتِمْ

١٠٥. يَا مَنْ يُدَاجُونَ ارجِعُوا
قَدْ خَابَ مَنْ بِكُمْ اعْتَصَمْ

١٠٦. لا تَشْغَلُوا أَذْهَانَكُمْ
بِحٌقوقِ شَعْبٍ تُهْتَضَمْ

١٠٧. حَلَفُوا إِذَا لَمْ يَظْفَرُوا
لا عَاشَ مِنْهُمْ مَنْ سَلِمْ

١٠٨. فَدَعُوهُمُ يَحْيَونَ أَوْ
يَفْنُونَ بَرا بِالْقَسَمْ

١٠٩. وَخُذُوا الضَّمِيرَ فَكَفِّنُو
ه بِالكَرِيمِ مِنَ الشِّيَمْ

١١٠. وَاسْتَوْدِعُوهُ تُرَابَهُ
مَيْتاً وَقُولُوا لا رُحِمْ
