Consoled them after losing loved ones and homelands.

34. Sorrow subsides but humiliation burns
Like embers only quenched with blood.

35. Spring returned to them like it used to
Blossoming over plains and hillsides...

36. How lovely is an abundant, pleasing land
That strangers come to raid!

37. Flowers smile wherever
Doves weep for the dead troops.

38. The shame of the free is to die
While the tyrants live on as enemies!

39. So they endured patiently then banded together
And freed themselves from the yoke of slavery.

40. They prepared for revenge while enmity
Boiled in their veins like eggs in embryos.

41. When they gained strength and their enemy
Was frustrated, they waged holy war.

42. They built their hopes on their readiness,
For hopes without readiness are no good.

43. They destroyed its landmarks and buried them
With blood, so blood mixed with ashes.

44. They conquered Paris and there
Fulfilled their deepest desires.
