1. O you who wept when fate was cruelly harsh
What can the weeping one do but resign?
١. يَا مَنْ بَكَى وَالخَطْبُ جِدُّ أَلِيمِ
مَا حِيلَةُ البَاكِي سِوَى التَّسْلِيمِ
2. The bloom of youth came to life submitting
Its farewells at the station of resignation
٢. زَيْنُ الشَّبَابِ أَتَى الحَيَاةَ مُسَلِّماً
أَوْدَاعُهُ فِي مَوْقِفِ التَّسْلِيمِ
3. Henry passed away in the prime of life
To grieve him overly is not kind
٣. هَنْرِي تَوَلَّى وَهْوَ مِنْكَ خُلاصَةٌ
إِنَّ الجَزُوعَ عَلَيْهِ غَيْرُ مُلِيمُ
4. None greener than he, of purer soul
Than any baseness, any blemish mean
٤. مَا كَانَ أَنْضَرَهُ وَأَطْهَرَ نَفْسِهِ
مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْنٍ فِي الخِلالِ ذَمِيمِ
5. None nobler, of more abundant justice
Of finer manners and profounder lore
٥. مَا كَانَ أَنْجَبَهُ وَأَوْفَرَ قِسْطَهُ
مِنْ فَضْلِ آدَابِ وَفَيْضِ عُلُومِ
6. Greatest in the torment of his people, his land
For he gave hope to every great one
٦. أَعْظِمْ بِحَرْقَةِ أَهْلِهِ وَبِلادِهِ
إِذْ كَانَ مَرجُوّاً لِكُلِّ عَظِيمِ
7. What words, though exalted by inspiration
Can soothe the wounds of your suffering heart?
٧. أَيُّ الكَلامِ وَإِنْ سَمَا إِلهَامُهُ
يَأْسُو جِرَاحَةَ قَلْبِكَ المُكْلُومِ
8. But such is the Wise One's destined decree
No reasonable soul doubts its hidden wisdom
٨. لَكِنَّهُ حُكْمُ القَدِيرِ لِحِكْمَةٍ
لا يَسْتَرِيبُ بِهَا ضَمِيرُ حَكِيمِ
9. So steel your heart for those left behind
For they are frail, while you are generous
٩. فَاذْخَرْ فُؤَادَكَ لِلَّذِينَ تَخَلَّفُوا
فَهُمُ الضِّعَافُ وَأَنْتَ أَيُّ كَرِيمِ
10. The rights of children are binding on you
Shelter of the estranged, refuge of the deprived
١٠. حَقُّ البَنِينَ عَلَيْكَ كَيفَ يُضِيعُهُ
كَهْفُ الغَرِيبِ وَمَوْئِلُ المَحْرُومِ
11. Why should I console Yusuf in his trial
When he welcomes adversity, undaunted by the worst?
١١. مَا لِي أُعَزِّي يُوسُفاً وَهْوَ أَمْرُوءٌ
رَاضَ الصِّعَابَ وَلَمْ يَنُوءْ بِجِسِيمِ
12. The days have not concealed from him their course
Nor has his age-old knowledge led him astray
١٢. لَمْ تَكْتُمِ الأَيَّامُ سِرَّ حَدِيثِهَا
عَنْهُ وَلَمْ يُخْطِئْهُ عِلْمُ قَدِيمِ
13. Who faces each tribulation as he has
With patience, with wise acquiescence
١٣. مَنْ مِثْلُهُ فِي كُلِّ نَازِلَةٍ لَهُ
تَقْوَى صَبْورٍ وَامْتِثَالِ حَكِيمِ
14. It is enough support that she who bore his sons
Shares now his calamity, his truest partner
١٤. يَكْفِيهِ عَوْناً أَنَّ مُنْجِبَ وُلْدِهِ
هِيَ فِي المُصَابِ لَهُ أَبَرُّ قَسِيمِ
15. Her faith bears adversity beyond compare
How could a gentle constitution weather such storms?
١٥. إِيمَانُهَا لا تَسْتَقِلُّ بِهِ الرُّبَى
كَيْفَ اسْتَقَلَّ بِهِ مَزَاجُ نَسِيمِ
16. Reason ruled by clearness is reason sound
While feeling ruled by kindness is feeling humane
١٦. العَقْلُ بِالرَّجْحَانِ عَقْلُ حَصِيفَةٍ
وَالقَلْبُ بِالتَّحْنَانِ قَلْبُ رَؤُومِ
17. O you both who obeyed His will contentedly
Whether sooner or later it came to pass
١٧. يَا مَنْ أَطَاعَا بِالرِّضَى مِنْ أَمْرِهِ
سِيَّانَ فِي التَّأْخِيرِ وَالتَّقْدِيمِ
18. For he who lives on in your hearts and ideals
Moves from breast to breast, resident forever
١٨. إِنَّ الَّذِي بَيْنَ الجَوَانِحِ ذِكْرُهُ
وَمِثَالُهُ مُتَرَحِّلٌ كَمٌقِيمِ
19. He is gone, with no worldly speck to veil
The manifestation of his timeless Lord
١٩. وَلَّى وَلَمْ يَحْجُبْ مِنْ الدُّنْيَا قِذَىً
عَنْهُ تَجَلِّي رَبِّهِ القَيُّومِ
20. Where are those left? And where his place
Of eternal triumph and bliss?
٢٠. أَيْنَ الَّذِينَ بَقُوا وَأَيْنَ مَكَانَهُ
مِنْ نُصْرَةٍ أَبَدِيَّةٍ وَنَعِيمِ
