1. I have spoken truly in your reproach, or the hot wind will prove true.
No glory is pretense, nor are its signs mere words,

١. صَدَقْتُ فِي عَتْبِكُم أَوْ يَصْدُقَ الشَّمَمُ
لا المَجْدُ دَعْوَى وَلا آيَاتُهُ كِلَمُ

2. O my people, it suffices us that we are ridiculed by God
for our own sake and for the sake of those the dispraised have claimed.

٢. يَا أُمَّتِي حَسْبُنَا بِاللهِ سُخريَةً
مِنَّا وَمِمَّا تَقَاضَى أًهْلَهَا الذِّمَمُ

3. Is there sorrow like what we weep over, do we have any grief like our pain?
If there is any rescue for us in our anguish, let our humiliation relieve us and our illness heal us,

٣. هَلْ مِثْلُ مَا نَتَباكَى عِنْدَنَا حَزَنٌ
وَهَلْ كَمَا نَتَشَاكَى عِنْدَنَا أَلَمُ

4. Take your pleasure and enjoy what pleases you,
Let no preserves or sanctuaries alarm you,

٤. إِنْ كَانَ مِنْ نَجْدَةٍ فِينَا تَفَجُّعَنَا
فَلْيَكْفِنَا ذُلُّنَا وَلْيَشْفِنَا السَّقَمُ

5. Or learn for once in life what is valid,
knowledge confirmed by deeds and resolves.

٥. تَمَتَّعُوا وَتَمَلَّوا مَا يَطِيبُ لَكُم
وَلا تَزَعْكُمْ مَحَاظِيرٌ وَلا حُرَمُ

6. By what ignorance did we become a neglected nation,
and by what understanding did the nations turn away their eyes from us?

٦. أَوِ اعْلَمُوا مَرَّةً فِي الدَّهْرِ صَالِحَةً
عِلماً تُؤَيِّدُهُ الأَفْعَالُ وَالهِمَمُ

7. Do not deny this blame of mine, my excuse
is a wound in my heart that will not heal.

٧. بِأَيِّ جَهْلٍ غَدَوْنَا أُمَّةً هَمَلاً
وَأَيِّ عَقْلٍ تَوَلَّتْ وَعْيَنَا الأُمَمُ

8. We it is who gave access to those who lie in wait for us,
a sanctuary whose ravens lodged safely.

٨. لا تُنْكِرُوا عَذلِي هَذَا فَمَعْذِرَتِي
جُرْحٌ بِقَلْبِي دَامَ لَيْسَ يَلْتَئِمُ

9. Had it not been for our negligence, our dereliction, our complacence,
by God, they would not have overstepped their bounds.

٩. نَحْنُ الَّذِينَ أَبَحْنَا الرَّاصِدِينَ لَنَا
حِمًى بِهِ كَانَتِ العِقْبَانُ تَعْتَصِمُ

10. This is the truth. I have sincerely proclaimed good counsel,
and good counsel is nothing other than righteousness and mercy to kin.

١٠. لَوْلا تَغَافُلُنَا لَوْلا تَخَاذُلُنَا
لَوْلا تَوَاكُلُنَا تَاللهِ مَا اقْتَحَمُوا

11. In mentioning it I did not wish you to despair,
better than despair is to summon destruction.

١١. هِيَ الحَقِيقَةُ عَنْ نُصْحٍ صَدَعْتُ بِهَا
وَمَا النَّصِيحَةُ إِلاَّ البِر وَالرَّاحِمُ

12. Does despair that enfeebles a tribe not render it prone to decay,
in which its noble qualities disintegrate?

١٢. لَمْ أَبْغِ مِنْ ذِكْرِهَا أَنْ تَيْأَسُوا جَزَعاً
خَيْرٌ مِنَ اليَّأْسِ أَن يُسْتَقْدَمَ العَدَمْ

13. What call is there for pride from hands that enjoy plenty,
gentle souls, breasts that do not rage?

١٣. أَليَأْسُ مَنْهَكَةٌ لِلقَوْمِ مُوبِقَةٌ
فِي حَمْأَةٍ تَتَلاشَى عِنْدَهَا الشِّيَمُ

14. When despair takes hold of groups it is a disease,
then comes disintegration followed by unknown decay,

١٤. مَا مَطْلَبُ الفَخْرِ مِنْ أَيْدٍ مُنَعَّمَةٍ
رَطِيبَةٍ وَنُفُوسٍ لَيْسَ تَحْتَدِمُ

15. like the shadow of a cloud eating away its brilliance
until the sun's rays and its splendor fade away.

١٥. يَأْسُ الجَمَاعَاتِ دَاءٌ إِنْ تَمَلَّكَهَا
فَهْوَ التَّحَلُّلُ يَتْلُوهُ الرَّدَى العَمَمُ

16. Do not lose heart - God hates chronic desperation - lose heart
today as the righteous are determined, so be resolute!

١٦. كالشَّمْسِ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهَا ظِل سُفْعَتِهَا
حَتَّى يَبِيدَ شُعَاعُ الشَّمْسِ وَالضَّرَمُ

17. Today the value of our homelands emanates,
beyond all else, and beneath them lie the less worthy.

١٧. لا تَقْنَطُوا كَرِهَ الله الأُولَى قَنِطُوا
اليَوْمَ يَعْتَزِمُ الأَبْرَارُ فَاعْتَمُوا

18. Today, if you begrudge your lifespans they are wasted,
and status is poverty, and your palaces, rubble.

١٨. أَليَوْمَ تَنْفُسُ بِالأَوْطَانِ قِيمَتُهَا
عَنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَتَدْنُوا دُونَها القِيَمُ

19. I hear in the party of life supporting our nation,
crushing those who oppressed.

١٩. ألَيَوْمَ إِنْ تَبْخَلُوا أَعْمَارُكُمْ سَفَةٌ
وَالْجَاهُ فَقْرٌ وَمَقْصُوراتُكُمْ رُجَمُ

20. Yes, so that our nation may triumph over the tyrants,
not through prayer, but through your triumph!

٢٠. إنِّي لأَسْمَعُ مِنْ حِزْبِ الحَيَاةِ بِكُمْ
نَصْراً لأُمَّتِنَا سُحْقاً لِمَنْ ظَلَمُوا

21. So it may survive, and the death surrounding it may die,
where our enemies the brutes drive it back.

٢١. نَعَمْ لِتُنْصُرْ عَلَى البَاغِينَ أُمَّتُنَا
لا بِالدُّعَاءِ وَلَكِنْ نَصْرُهَا بِكُمُ

22. If we seek its supremacy, nothing can reduce it,
can it then perish, with breath still left in it?

٢٢. لِتَبْقَ وَلْيَمُتْ المَوْتُ المُحِيطُ بِهَا
مِنْ حَيْثُ يَدْفَعُهُ أَعْدَاؤُنَا الْغُشُمُ

23. We are not like the cowards who think
that to survive like slaves means to be safe.

٢٣. إِنْ نَبْغِ إِعْلاءهَا لا شَيْءَ يَخْفِضُهَا
فَهَلْ تَمُوتُ وَفِيهَا هَذِهِ النَسَمُ

24. The people live if ransomed, and it hopes for
the money of sons, ritual drink is blood.

٢٤. لَسْنَا مِنَ الْجُبَنَاءِ الْحَاسِبِينَ إِذَا
نَجَوْا نَجَاةَ العِبِدَّى أَنَّهُمْ سَلِمُوا

25. However much privilege and favor we grant it,
the pledge of meager gain for great price is inevitable.

٢٥. أَلشَّعْبُ يَحْيَا بِأَنْ يُفْدَى وَمَطْمَعُهُ
مَالُ الْبَنِين مُزَكَّى وَالشَّرَابُ دَمُ

26. Consider the course of history, you will not find
a people brought to ruin, once guided, who then went blind.

٢٦. مَهْمَا مَنَحْنَاهُ مِنْ جَاهٍ وَمِنْ مُهَجٍ
فَبَيعَةُ البَخْسِ بِالغَالِي وَلا جَرَمُ

27. Those were brought down by their own recklessness,
for they preferred pleasures and grew divided.

٢٧. عُودُوا إِلَى سَيْرِ التَّارِيخِ لا تَجِدُوا
شَعْباً قَضَى غَيْرَ مضنْ ضَلُّوا الْهُدَى وَعَمُوا

28. No people grow strong enough to destroy another people,
for if you see a tribe laid low, it is they who perished by their own hands.

٢٨. أُولئِكُمْ إِنَّمَا بَادُوا بِغِرَّتِهِمْ
وَأَنَّهُمْ آثَرُوا اللَّذَّاتِ وَانْقَسَمُوا

29. O my tribe, sincerely granted to glory,
nearby victory and a happy end are fates.

٢٩. لا شَعْبَ يَقْوَى عَلَى شَعْبٍ فَيُهْلِكُهُ
فَإِنْ تَرَ الْقَوْمَ صَرْعَى فَالْجُنَاةُ هُمُ

30. Our state appealed to its mighty ancestors
that its bond not be severed in our time.

٣٠. يَا أُمَّتِي هَبَّةً لِلمَجْدِ صَادِقَةً
فَالنَّصْرُ مِنْكُمْ قَرِيبٌ وَالمُنَى أَمَمُ

31. Defend its sanctuary, do not let its noble virtues
be seen by lofty minds too shy to look at them.

٣١. عَاذَتْ بِآبَائِهَا المَاضِينَ دَوْلَتُنا
مِنْ أَنْ يُلِمَّ بِهَا فِي عَهْدِنَا يَتَمُ

32. My heart burns over a war I witnessed,
when the foxes ran riot as the land lay waste.

٣٢. فَاحْمُوا حِمَاهَا وَلا تُهْتَكْ سَتَائِرُهَا
عَنْ مُنْجِبَاتِ العُلَى يَسْتَحْيِهَا العُقْمُ

33. Grievous on us, their disaster would have been
had their vaunters been other than them!

٣٣. وَاحَرَّ قَلْبَاهُ مِنْ حَرْبٍ شَهِدْتُ بِهَا
سَطْوَ الثَّعَالِبِ لَمَّا أَقْفَرَ الأجَمُ

34. O ghost of Uthman, awe still clings to you,
alive in fame - commemorated, etched.

٣٤. هَانَتْ عَلَيْنَا وَإِنْ جَلَّتْ مُصِيبَتُهَا
لَوْ أَنَّ خُطَّابَ ذَاكَ الفَخْرَ غَيْرُهُمُ

35. How did you transgress, you guardian of its bounds?
The folly of those flatterers, they feared not nor were silent!

٣٥. أَيْ طَيْفَ عُثْمَانَ لَمْ يَبْرَحْ بِهَيْبَتِهِ
حَيّاً عَلَى أَنَّهُ بِالذِّكْرِ مُرْتَسِمُ

36. Why, they know well from their neighbor beforehand
and from the Rum champion what they knew!

٣٦. أَنَّى تَخَطَّى حُدُوداً أَنْتَ حَارِسُهَا
حَمْقَى الطَّلايِينِ لَمْ يَخْشَوا وَلَمْ يَجِمُوا

37. Had you taken care, o ghost, to scream in their ears
with a roar, they would have bolted and fled!

٣٧. أَنَّ وَقَدْ عَلِمُوا مِنْ جَارِهِمْ قُدُماً
وَمِنْ غُزَاةِ الرُّومِ مَا عَلِمُوا

38. Or had you possessed a bound, they'd have seen
in that lion what the boons do not praise.

٣٨. لَوْ رُعْتَ يَا طَيْفُ مِنْ غَيْبٍ مَسَامِعِهِمْ
بِزَأْرَةٍ حِينَ جَدَّ لانْهَزَمُوا

39. They reckoned your kingdom from its long reign as weak,
they will recognize one whom eld has not made frail!

٣٩. أَوْ كُنْتَ تَمْلِكُ وَثْباً مِن نَوىً لَرَأَوْا
مِنْ ذَلِكَ اللَّيْثِ مَا لا تَحْمَدُ النَّعَمُ

40. When resolved, if they rely on his calm, no feebleness in him,
but delusion and fancy in them!

٤٠. ظَنوا بِمُلْكِكَ مِنْ طُولِ المَدَى هَرَماً
سَيَعْرِفُونَ فَتىً مَا مَسَّهُ الْهَرَمُ

41. Take the truth of what you pictured to yourselves
from peaks and plateaus where choices are found.

٤١. يَحْمِيهِ عَزْمٌ إِذَا اعْتَزُّوا بِهُدْنَتِهِ
فَمَا بِهِ وَهَنٌ لَكِنْ بِهِمْ وَهَمُ

42. On your isles anywhere, or in your cities,
is there where his predecessor did not tread?

٤٢. خُذُوا حَقِيقَةَ مَا شَبَّهْتُمُوهُ لَكُمْ
مِمَّا تُخَيِّرُهُ القِيعَانُ وَالقِمَمُ

43. The sons of Uthman are devoted keepers, they've known
Uthman's history, of opening and glory.

٤٣. هَلْ فِي جَزَائِرِ كُمْ أَمْ فِي مَدَائِنِكُمْ
مَا لَمْ تَطَأْهُ له مِنْ سَالِفٍ قَدَمُ

44. The protectors of their ancestors’ throats - would they
allow the string they threaded to be scattered?

٤٤. أَبْنَاءُ عُثْمَانَ حُفَّاظٌ وَقَدْ عَهِدُوا
تَارِيخَ عُثْمَانَ فِيهِ الفَتْحُ وَالعِظَمُ

45. You deemed Tripoli easy prey permitted you,
but the worst slayer of the deceiver is his gain!

٤٥. هُمُ الْحُمَاةُ لأعْلاقِ الْجُدُودِ فَلَنْ
يَرْضَوا بِأَنْ يُنْثَرَ الْعِقْدُ الَّذِي نَظَمُوا

46. There your horsemen meet, heavily though equipped,
Arabs, hardy, light in battle, charging masses.

٤٦. خِلْتُمْ طَرَابُلُسَ الغُنْمَ المُبَاحَ لَكُمْ
وَشَرُّ مَا قَتَلَ الخُدَّاعَ مَا غَنِمُوا

47. Few, each distinguished in the war band,
dumbfounded by those who stayed behind.

٤٧. هُنَاكَ يَلْقَى سَرَايَاكُمْ وَإِنْ ثَقُلَتْ
عُرْبٌ صِلابٌ خِفَافٌ فِي الْوَغَى هُضَمُ

48. Godward was their zeal, Godward their rage,
under fire, in their ears, deafness.

٤٨. قَلُّوا وَأَبْلَى بَلاءَ الْجَمْعِ وَاحِدُهُمْ
تَحَيَّرَ مِمَّا خُولِفَ الرَّقَمُ

49. They are clouds, but lions they,
they are regiments, staunch camels they.

٤٩. للهِ هَبُّتُهُمْ للهِ غَارَتُهُمْ
تَحْتَ الرَّصَاصِ وَفِي أَسْمَاعِهِمْ صَمَمُ

50. They feed on first growth hills, now lush,
clothing them through bare steeps and stony clefts.

٥٠. هُمُ السَّحَائِبُ إِلاَّ أَنَّهَا أُسُدٌ
هُمُ الكَتَائِبُ إِلاَّ أَنَّهَا رَخَمُ

51. Sometimes in early light they storm high mounds,
the coward cringes, scheming to betray them.

٥١. يَغْثَوْنَ بِكْرَ الرَّوَابِي وَهْيَ نَاهِدَةٌ
فَتَكْتَسِيهِمْ عَلَى عُرْيٍ وَتَحْتَشِمُ

52. Often they disappear into a valley for the night,
the vulture's wing shields them as they bed down beneath it.

٥٢. وَرُبَّمَا طَرَقُوا الطَّوْدَ الوَقُورَ ضُحىً
فَهْوَ الخَلِيعُ يُصَابِيهِمْ وَيَغْتَلِمُ

53. Like an eagle's wing guarding her young - when
they leap up, she startles, flustered by their ardor.

٥٣. وَرُبَّ وَادٍ تَوَارَوْا فِيهِ لَيْلَتَهُمْ
فَحَاطَهُمْ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ وَقَدْ جَثَمُوا

54. Do you watch for their feats, my clan of fame?
Recall what olden days have let you forget?

٥٤. عَطْفَ العُقَابِ عَلَى أَفْرَاخِهَا فَإِذَا
تَوَثَبُوا قَلِقَتْ مِنْ رَوْعِهَا الأكَمُ

55. In armies, who can ride out ordeals like them,
casual with affliction, lest the crisis worsen?

٥٥. أَتَنْظُرُونَ بَنِي الطَّلْيَانِ مُعْجِزَهُمْ
وَتَذْكُرُونَ الَّذِي أَنْسَاكُمُ القِدَمُ

56. Troops of jinn - no matter how strained, still sprightly,
while weakness in the foe, not in themselves!

٥٦. هَلْ فِي الجُيُوشِ كَمَا فِيهِمْ مُبَاسَطَةٌ
مَعَ المكَارِهِ إِمَّا لَزَّتْ الأُزُمُ

57. However fiercely war shows its teeth, still gently
its glance takes on their beauty, so fine their taste!

٥٧. جُنْدٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ مَهْمَا أُجْهِدُوا نَشِطُوا
كَأَنَّمَا الْوَهْيُ بِالأَعْدَاءِ دُونَهُمُ

58. When they attend upon it in the gardens promised them,
horror becomes a feast, horrors its ornaments.

٥٨. مَهْمَا تَشَنَّعَتِ الْحَرْبُ الضَّرُوسُ لَهُمْ
أَعَارَهَا مَلْمَحاً لِلْحُسْنِ حُسْنُهُمُ

59. The land leaps dancing, the wind makes music,
seriousness jokes, and dangers smile.

٥٩. مَتَى صَلَوْهَا وَفِي الْجَنَّاتِ مَوْعِدُهُمْ
فَالْهَوْلُ عُرْسٌ وَمِنْ زِينَاتِهِ الْخُدُمُ

60. Self-reliant, no pretense, no impudence,
tortured, no complaining, no fatigue.

٦٠. وَالأَرْضُ رَاقِصَةٌ وَالرِّيحُ عَازِفَةٌ
وَالْجِدُّ يَمْزَحُ وَالأَخْطَارُ تَبْتَسِمُ

61. Sometimes destitute and thirsty, still the downpour
suffices not the noble-hearted, nor fresh showers.

٦١. مُسْتَظْهِرِينَ وَلا دَعْوَى وَلا صَلَفٌ
مُعَذَّبِينَ وَلا شَكْوَى وَلا سَأَمُ

62. Hunger's disgrace springs from unbelief, though deeds
are born of it amazing raids and daring feats.

٦٢. وَقَدْ يَكوُنُونَ فِي بُؤْسٍ وَفِي عَطَشٍ
فَمَا يَقِي الْغُرَمَاءَ الرِّيُّ وَالبَشَمُ

63. That is the Mighty whom they cannot touch,
the Hidden who destroys and swallows down.

٦٣. أَلجُوْعُ قُبِّحَ مِنْ كُفْرٍ وَإِنْ وَلَدَتْ
مِنْهُ أَعَاجِيبَهَا الغَارَاتُ وَالْقُحَمُ

64. Do not abandon it to threaten them now that
without a fight destruction of its might advances.

٦٤. هُوَ القَوِيُّ الَّذِي لا يَظْفَرُونَ بِهِ
وَهْوَ الْخَفِيُّ الَّذِي يُفْنِي وَيَهْتَضِمُ

65. O God, defer your pardon until water sustains them,
then refresh them with a pool's cool shade!

٦٥. لا تَتْرُكُوهُ يُرَادِيهِمْ وَقَدْ قَعَدَتْ
بِلا قِتَالٍ تُلاشِي بَأْسَهَا البُهَمُ

66. No condition grimmer than news of their hurt,
their hot blindness raging wild as flames.

٦٦. يَا رّبِّ عَفَوْكَ حَتَّى المَاءَ يُعْزِزُهُمْ
فَمُرْ تَجُدْهَمْ بِنَقْعِ الغُلَّةِ الدِّيَمِ

67. But I see in their souls what vengeance schedules,
repaying them, appointments too sharp to sheathe.

٦٧. لا خَطْبَ أَبْشَعُ مِنْ خَطْبِ الأُوَارِ وَقَدْ
بَاتَتْ حُشَاشَاتُهُمْ كَالنَّارِ تَضْطَرِمُ

68. Steel, rumble in our ranks and lightning-flash!
Thicken and shake when their violence shakes you!

٦٨. لَكِنْ أَرَاهُمْ وَفِي أَرْوَاحِهِمْ عَلَلٌ
مِمَّا تُوَاعِدُهَا الثَّارَاتُ وَالنِّقَمُ

69. Wherever one of you requires a witty comrade,
torsos pour forth scarlet blood and crimson ichor!

٦٩. كُونُوا مَلائِكَ لا جُوعٌ وَلا ظَمَأٌ
وَليَغْلِبْنَ نِظَامَ الخَلْقِ صَبْرُكُمُ

70. Or shine on spearheads - lances beyond count -
light, chanting, as they plunge in simultaneous!

٧٠. أَلَسْتُمُ الغَالِبِينَ الدَّهْرَ تَدْهَمُكُمْ
مِنْهُ الصُّرُوفُ فَتَعْيَا ثُمَّ تَنْصَرِمُ

71. Then wherever two of you find giddy spirits,
night spills bodies, their brains knocked awry!

٧١. أَلَيْسَ مِنْكُمْ أَوَانَ الكَرِّ كُلُّ فَتىً
يَصُولُ مَا شَاءَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَيَحْتَكِمُ

72. So standards emerge from those ranks for us
an omen lingering there, obscured from sight!

٧٢. صَعْبُ المِرَاسِ عَلَى الآفَاتِ يُتْعِبُهَا
جَلْدٌ تَقَاذَفُهُ الأَنْوَارُ وَالظُّلْمُ

73. We recognize you as their captain today,
your mighty signs are their slaves.

٧٣. وَكُلُّ ذِي مِرَّةٍ يَمْضِي بِرَايَتِهِ
إِلَى الْجِهَادِ كَمَا اعْتَادَتْ وَيَغْتَنِمُ

74. Did you come to dock us, or come to drive us back
when sorrows roused us and worries stung?

٧٤. يَقُولُ لِلعَلَمِ الْخَفَّاقِ فِي يَدِهِ
فَيِّيءْ مِنَ الأَرْضِ مَا تَخْتَارُ يَا عَلَمُ

75. By heaven, had their birds flown over eagles
and their ships ridden the seas by God's decree,

٧٥. وَكُلُّ آبٍ بِفيءٍ إِنْ أَبَاهُ لَهُ
عِزٌّ لِدَوْلَتِهِ أَوْ مَطْمَعٌ سَنِمُ

76. all evidences of doom been given them
down to ghouls, winds, and stones from the sky,

٧٦. يَهْوِي وَفِي قَلْبِهِ رُؤيَا تُصَاحِبُهُ
مِنْ آيَةِ الفَتْحِ حَيْثُ العُمرُ يُخْتَتَمُ

77. they'll rule no plot of free Tripoli, they'll wrong
none of her widows if they come out on top,

٧٧. ألموْتُ مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ عُقْبَى مُجَاهَدَةٍ
نَوْمٌ تَبَالَدَ حَتَّى مَا بِهِ حُلُمُ

78. nor gain from their raid but lasting disgrace and shame
holding fast, what sore losers usually feel!

٧٨. بَعْضُ الثَّرَى فِيهِ آمَالٌ يُحَسُّ لَهَا
رِكْزٌ وَنَبْضٌ فِي بَعْضِ الثَّرَى رِمَمُ

79. Tell whoever's breast cannot open to pour forth aid
to our state against their crimes,

٧٩. أُولَئِكُمْ مُنْصِفُونَا يَوْمَ كُرْبَتِنَا
مِنَ الأُولَى غَاصَبُونَا الحَقَّ واخْتَصَمُوا

80. Do you disdain relieving neighbors whom hunger distends
or disavow war dead if they're pitied?

٨٠. أَرْعِدْ حَدِيدُ وَأَبْرِقْ فِي كَتائِبِنَا
وَاغْلُظْ وَرِقَّ كَمَا يَبْغِيكَ بطْشُهُمُ

81. Or pretend that Egypt, dealing gently with them,
risks thereby dark afflictions that consume?

٨١. أُبْصُقْ دُخَاناً بِوَجْهِ المُعْتَدِي وَلظىً
إِذَا الْتَفَتَّ تُحَاذِيِهِ وَفِيكَ فَمُ

82. The bogeyman reveals Egypt in panic -
does this inform about her devotions, you relic?

٨٢. أَوِ الْتَمِعْ فِي نِصَالٍ ى عِدَادَ لَهَا
خَطَّافَةٍ تَتَغَنَّى وَهْيَ تَقْتَسِمُ

83. A trick that terrifies, had its plotter not been left
distracted, deluded in mind and senses!

٨٣. فَحَيْثُمَا أَعْوَزَتْمَا مِنْكَ ذَات لَهىً
تَسِيلُ مِنْهَا الْحُتُوفُ الْحُمْرُ وَالْحُمَمُ

84. Supposedly, philosophizing, he kills off days -
maybe this wisdom has killed him instead?

٨٤. فَلْيَخْطُبِ السَّيْفُ فَصْلاً فِي مَفَارِقِهِمْ
يَدِنْ لِذَاكَ البَيَانِ الْقَاطِعِ الْعَجَمُ

85. Thank God our ranks do not perish
at some chatterer's prattle, nor navy sinks!

٨٥. أَوْ لا فَكُنْ هَنَةً فِي كَفِّ مُقْتَحِمٍ
مِنَّا وَيَصْلِمُ أُذْنَ المِدْفَعِ الجَلَمُ

86. O homeland calling out for our rescue,
Egypt yearns for you, Jerusalem, the Sanctum!

٨٦. لِيَبْرُزِ العِلْمُ مِنْ تِلْكَ الصُّفُوفِ لَنَا
عَلامَ يَمْكُثُ فِيهَا وَهْوَ مُلْتَثِمُ

87. No speech has softened and made us weep
like this speech of yours, so moving, tears streaming!

٨٧. إِنَّا عَرفْنَاكَ أَنْتَ الْيَوْمَ قَائِدُهُمْ
وَكُلُّ آيَاتِكَ الكُبْرَى لَهُمْ خَدَمُ

88. We felt the full weight our ignorance brought upon us
and the bitter depth of our remorse.

٨٨. هَلْ جِئْتَ تَبْتُرُنَا أَوْ جِئْتَ تَزْجُرُنَا
مِنْ حَيْثُ تُوقِظُنَا الأَوْجَاعُ وَالغُمَمُ

89. Ordain what penance you will for our sin,
our sincerity and nobility appeal to you.

٨٩. تَاللهِ لَوْ طَارَ فَوْقَ النَّسْرِ طَائِرُهُمْ
وَذَلَّلَتْ لَهُمُ الأَبْحَارُ فُلُكُهُمُ

90. Our wealth is devoted to you, souls too,
long live he who enjoys your bounty without blame!

٩٠. وَسُخِّرَتْ مل آيَاتِ الْفَنَاءِ لَهُمْ
حَتَّى الْجِوَارِفُ وَالأَرْيَاحُ وَالرُّجُمُ

٩١. لَنْ يَمْلِكُوا نَفْسَ حُرٍّ فِي طَرَابُلُسٍ
وَلَنْ يَضِيمُوا الأَشْلاءِ إِنْ حكَمُوا

٩٢. وَلَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُمْ مِنْ كَسْبِ غَزْوَتِهِمْ
إِلاَّ الشَّقَاءِ وَعَارٌ خَالِدٌ يَصِمُ

٩٣. قُلْ لامْرِئٍ لَمْ تَرُقْهُ مِصْرُ بَاذِلَةً
نَصْراً لِدَوْلَتِهَا مِنْهُم بِمَا اجْتَرَمُوا

٩٤. أَتَحْرِمُ الرِّفْدَ جِيرَاناً يُضَوِّرُهُمْ
جُوعٌ وَتَنْكَرُ قَتْلَى الْحَرْبِ إِنْ رُحِمُوا

٩٥. أَمْ تَدَّعِي إِنَّ مِصْراً إِنْ تَبَرَّ بِهِمْ
تُشْبِبْ بِهَا فِتَنٌ جَوفَاءُ تَلْتَهِمُ

٩٦. إِذَا أبُو الهَوْلِ أَبْدَى مِصْرَ مُرْعَبَةً
فَمَا يُخَبِّرُ عَنْ طَاعَاتِهَا الهَرَمُ

٩٧. كَيْدٌ يُرَوِّعُ لَولا أَنَّ كَائِدَهُ
حَيْرَانُ أَوْطَانُهُ الأَوْهَامُ وَالسُّدُمُ

٩٨. بِزَعْمِهِ يَقْتُلُ الأَيَّامَ فَلْسَفَةً
وَرُبَّمُا قَتَلَتْهُ هَذِهِ الحِكَمُ

٩٩. أَلحَمْدُ للهِ لا تَفْنَى كَتَائِبُنَا
بِقَوْلِ قَالٍ وَلا الأُسْطُولُ يَنْحَطِمُ

١٠٠. يَا أَيُّها الوَطَنْ الدَّاعِي لِنَجْدَتِهِ
لَبَّتْكَ مِصْرُ وَلَبَّى القُدْسُ وَالحَرَمُ

١٠١. مَا كَانَ خَطْبٌ لِيَدْهَانَا وَيُبْكِينَا
كَمَا دَهَانَا وَأَبْكَى خَطْبُكَ العَرِمُ

١٠٢. لَقَدْ شَعَرْنَا بِمَا غَضَّتْ جهَالَتُنَا
مِنَّا وَبَالَغَ فِي تَأْدِيبِنَا النّدَمُ

١٠٣. أَشِرْ بِمَا شِئْتَ تَكْفِيراً لِزَلَّتِنَا
يَشْفَعْ لَنَا عِنْدَكَ الإِخْلاصُ وَالكَرَمُ

١٠٤. أَمْوَالُنَا لَكَ وَقْفٌ وَالنفُوسُ
وَعِشْ وَلا عَاشَ فِي نُعْمَاكَ مُتهَمُ
