1. The bird with lofty aspirations
What does it want that clips its wings?

١. أَلطَّائِرُ العَالِي مَرَادُهُ
مَاذَا يُجَثِّمُهُ مُرَادُهْ

2. It may seek the mountain peaks
Yet betray the zeal of its gear

٢. قَدْ يَبْتَغِي أَوْجَ السُّهَى
وَيَخُونُ هِمَّتَهُ عَتَادَهْ

3. And be caught among its fledglings
If it glorifies itself with high-flying

٣. وَيُصَادُ بَيْنَ صِغَارِهِ
إِنْ عَزَّ فِي القُحْمِ اصْطِيَادُهْ

4. I wished well for Ismail's state
His state thrived and was prosperous

٤. أَوْدت بِإِسْمَاعِيلَ نَجْ
دَتُهُ وَأَضْنَاهُ سُهَادُهْ

5. Life became easy for him
And his land flourished beyond measure

٥. رَخُصَتْ عَلَيْهِ حَيَاتُهُ
وَغَلَتْ عَلَى قَدْرٍ بِلادُهْ

6. Needs end his glory
And his rest comes

٦. لا بِدْعَ أَنْ تَفْنَى عَزَا
ئِمُهُ وَأَنْ يَأْتِي رُقَادُهْ

7. He kept his word in the struggle and fell
Vanquished by his own struggle

٧. وَفَّى الجِهَادَ وَطَاحَ مُخْ
تَتَماً بِصَرْعَتِهِ جِهَادُهْ

8. When hostility overwhelmed him
His fate made amends

٨. سَمْحٌ إِذَا جَارَ المَعَا
شُ عَلَيْهِ أَنْصَفَهُ مَعَادُهْ

9. Al-Ariha was his provision
And noble manners his supplies

٩. أَلأَريَحِيَّةُ ذُخْرُهُ
وَمَكَارِمُ الأَخْلاقِ زَادُهْ

10. Holding onto truth it sustains him
And in God is his support

١٠. مُتَشَبِّثٌ بِالحَقِّ يَرْ
عَاهُ وَبِاللهِ اعْتِضَادُهْ

11. He united the people despite
Their differing interests and affection

١١. جَمَعَ الأَنَامَ عَلَى اخْتِلا
فٍ فِي مَشَارِبِهِمْ وَدَادُهْ

12. He shone brilliantly among the elite
And therein lies his uniqueness

١٢. جَمْعاً تَأَلَّقَتِ الخُصُو
مُ بِهِ وَفِي ذَاكَ انْفِرَادُهْ

13. The people follow their own minds
Be they fair or dark

١٣. فَالشَّعْبُ وَفْقٌ فِي هَوَا
هُ مُسَوَّدُوهُ أَوْ سَوَادُهْ

14. You saw his ardor for it
When it was said his foe approached

١٤. أَشَهِدْتَ لَهْفَتَهُ عَلَيْ
هِ حِينَ قِيلَ دَنَا بِعَادُهْ

15. None of his followers
But were revived by his friendship

١٥. مَا فِي مُحِبِّيهِ امْرُؤٌ
إِلاَّ أُقِضَّ بِهِ وِسَادُهْ

16. It complains of their bitterness
While in their feelings is its consolation

١٦. تَشْكُو مَرَارَتُهُ السَّؤَا
دَ وَفِي مَرَائِرِهِمْ سُؤَادُهْ

17. Did you see in the procession
The grieving nation and its formation

١٧. أَرَأَيْتَ فِي التَّشْيِيعِ مَا الشَّ
عْبُ الحَزِينُ وَمَا احْتِشَادُهْ

18. And you glimpsed beneath the cover
The agonizing grief shown in its flames

١٨. وَلَمَحْتَ مَا تَحْتَ العُبُو
سَةِ مِنْ شَجىً تُورَى زِنَادُهْ

19. And you knew from the burning embers
What its ashes cannot hide

١٩. وَعَرَفْتَ مِنْ جَمْرِ الأَسَى
مَا لَيْسَ يَسْتُرُهُ رَمَادُهْ

20. As if within their chests
A liver pained by its sorrows

٢٠. وَكَأَنَّ بَيْنَ ضُلُوعِهِمْ
كَبِداً أَلَمَّ بِهَا كُبَادُهُ

21. You saw the tearing down
Of the mighty edifice as its pillar collapsed

٢١. أَنَظَرْتَ تَقْوِيضَ البِنَا
ءِ الضَّخْمِ حِينَ هَوَى عِمَادُهْ

22. And its dazzling whiteness was covered
By the darkness that swept over it

٢٢. وَطَغَى عَلَى الأَبْصَارِ بَعْ
دَ بَيَاضِهِ الزَّاهِي سَوَادُهْ

23. The fragrance of flowers filled the air
And mourning clothed all its household

٢٣. رِيعَتْ لَهُ شُمُّ الصُّرُو
حِ وَعَمَّ أَهْلِيهَا حِدَادُهْ

24. The noble house was eulogized
As was its birthplace

٢٤. فَرَثَى لِذَاكَ البَيْتِ طَا
رِفُ عِزِّهِ وَرَثَى تِلادَهْ

25. I grieve for an extinguished star
That cannot be revived by my gaze

٢٥. لَهْفِي عَلَى نَجْمٍ خَبَا
لَنْ يُجْدِيَ العَيْنَ افْتِقَادُهْ

26. And for its graying trunk once laden
With the gloss of triumph in its support

٢٦. وَعَلَى شَيبِهِ النَّصْلِ أَغْ
مَدَ رَوْنَقَ النَّصْرِ اغْتِمَادُهْ

27. Where is the noble and free young man
And where are his friends and brethren

٢٧. أَيْنَ الفَتَى الحُرُّ الأَبِيُّ
وَأَيْنَ سُؤْدَدُهُ وَآدُهْ

28. Where is the brilliant man of letters
And what ink flows from his pen

٢٨. أَيْنَ الأَدِيبُ الأَلْمَعِيُّ
وَمَا يُرَقِّشُهُ مِدَادُهْ

29. Except as the meadows blossom
Or as the flowers reap their rewards

٢٩. مَا القَوْلُ تُوحِيهِ قَرِي
حَتُهُ وَيُبْدِعُهُ اجْتِهَادُهْ

30. Where is the kind brother
From whom aid or increase is expected

٣٠. إِلاَّ كَمَا تُجْلَى وُرُو
دُ الرَّوْضِ أَوْ تُجْنَى شِهَادُهْ

31. It suffices the rider if in one lap
His brother's steed outpaces his

٣١. أَيْنَ الأَخُ البَرُّ الَّذِي
يُرْجَى نَدَاهُ أَوْ ذِيَادُهْ

32. Where is the pure one untainted
In an age steeped in decadence

٣٢. أَكْفَى مُقِيلٍ إِنْ كَبَا
بِأَخِيهِ فِي شَوْطٍ جَوَادُهْ

33. His mark was cleansed of blights
And his hand did not touch filth

٣٣. أَيْنَ النَّقِيًّ الطَّبْعِ فِي
دَهْرٍ قَدِ اسْتَشْرَى فَسَادُهْ

34. Oh resting place of the twins
Whose beauty was cloaked in stillness

٣٤. طَهْرَتْ مِنَ الأَوْضَارِ شِي
مَتُهُ وَلَمْ يَدْنَسْ بِجَادُهْ

35. Like the ribs of a wet nurse
Over her children softened in her shelter

٣٥. يَا مَضْجَعاً لِلتَّوْأَمَيْ
نِ طَوَى جَمَالَهُمَا جَمَادُهْ

36. Quenching and grazing the foe
Spilling from her urns

٣٦. كَأَضَالِعِ الحَانِي عَلَى
وَلَدَيْهِ قَدْ لاَنَتْ صِلادُهْ

37. For the two sleepers interred
As the horizon resumed its bleakness

٣٧. سَقْياً وَرَعْياً ل عَدَا
كَ العَفْوُ سَاكِبَةً عِهَادُهْ

38. Let the third one of the two moons
Find peace, and calm his heart

٣٨. أَلفَرْقَدَانِ تَوَارَيَا
وَالأُفْقٌ عَاوَدَهُ ارْبِدَادُهْ
