The life we lived - as though the feud of war

6. Were turned by peace to fellowship once more!
Men share the load of woe, and kinship then,

7. Is born of common suffering among men.
The ties most sure bind souls in common pain.

8. When people suffer under Fortune's blows,
On all alike the same affliction weighs.

9. Our plaint is voiced, though other mouths complain,
We grieve o'er that which other hearts arraign.

10. We make our pastime out of duty's tool,
Else every sport and jest were disallowed.
