٧. وَالْمَصَابِيحَ فِي البَخُورِ كَأَطْيَا

٨. أَوْ أَزَاهِيرَ فِي قَوَارِيرَ مِنْ
شِبْهِ الْجِنَانِ الْمُعَلَّقَاتِ بِوَادِي

9. And the cheers and music provoke
With rhythmic beats and melodious chants

٩. وَالتَّهالِيلُ وَالمَعَازِفُ تُشْجِي
بِضُرُوبِ الإِيقاعِ وَالإِنْشادِ

١٠. نَغَمَاتٌ تَزَوَّدَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ

١٤. ظَبَيَات فِي نُمْرَقٍ رَائِعَاتٌ
وَرِيَاضٌ نُضْرٌ مِنْ السَّجادِ

Delicate spirit breath in the bodies

١٥. وَتَمَاثِيلُ مَنْ رَآهَا رَأَى أَخ
فَى دَبِيبِ الأَرْوَاحِ فِي الاجْسَادِ

16. The artisans’ hands perfected them until
There was no room left for more perfection

١٦. أَتْقَنَتَهَا أَيْدِي الصِّناعَاتِ حَتى
لَيْسَ فِيهَا الإِتْقَانُ بِالمُسْتَزَادِ

17. And the genius of engraving and decoration came
With sorts of ingenuity and endeavor

١٧. وَأَتَتْ عَبْقَرِيَّة النَّقشِ وَالرَّقْ
شِ ضُرُوباً مِنْ فِطْنَةٍ وَاجْتِهَادِ

18. And beauty saw its view in the lines of the drawings
Between the straight and the curved

١٨. وَرَأَى الحُسْنُ رَأْيَهُ فِي خُطُوطِ الرَّ
سْمِ بَيْنَ الْقَوِيمِ وَالْمُنَآدِ

19. A residence, had it been built of clay
It would not have been valued by critics

١٩. مَسْكِنٌ لَوْ بَنَوهُ تِبْراً لَمَا أَعْ
لَوهُ قَدْراً فِي أَعْيُنِ النُّقادِ

20. Like royal palaces, but it has thousands of caretakers

٢٠. كَبُيُوتِ المُلُوكِ لَكِنْ لَهُ أَلْ

The feast's adornment, most beautiful of holidays

٢١. حَبَّذَا فِي رِحَابِهِ وَذَرَاهُ
زِينَةُ الْعِيدِ أَبْهَجِ الأَعْيَادِ

22. And the gathering of the leadership in mind
And carpentry and wealth with solidarity

٢٢. وَتلاَقِي أُولِي الإِمَارَاتِ عَقْلاً
وَنِجَاراً وَثَرْوةً فِي احْتِشَادِ

23. The elite of the people circulating among them
However the purpose desires and back and forth

٢٣. عِلْيَةُ القَوْمِ بَيْنَهَا فِي طَوَافٍ
مَا تَشَاءُ المُنَى وَفِي تَرْدَادِ

24. And they gained from the essence of these meanings
What healed the sickness of arid souls

٢٤. وَرَدُوا مِنْ عُيُونِ تِلْكَ المَعَانِي
مَا شَفَى غُلَّةَ النُّفوسِ الصَّوَادِي

25. And they attained for their taste what they found good
Of pleasures and bitterness cooled

٢٥. وَأَصَابُوا لِحِسِّهمْ مَا اسْتَطَابُوا
مِنْ هَنِيءٍ وَمِنْ مَرِيءٍ بُرَادِ

26. And they passed around aged liquor of value
That markets did not sell even with declining prices

٢٦. وَتَسَاقَوْا عَتِيقَةً بِنْتَ رِقٍّ
لَمْ تَبِعْهَا الأَسْوَاقُ بَيْعَ كَسَادِ

27. They drank it while all feeling nostalgic
Of eras that cannot be restored

٢٧. شَرِبُوهَا وَكُلُّهُمْ مسْتَعِيدٌ
مِنْ عُهُودٍ مَا لَيْسَ بِالمُسْتَعَادِ

28. So when dawn rose from its darkness
And company returned after the departure of the visitor;

٢٨. فَإِذَا الْفَجْرُ بَازِغٌ مِنْ دُجَاهَا
وَإِذَا الأُنْسُ بَعْدَ أَنْ رَاح غَادِي

Disagreeing with Marib or Murad

٢٩. طَيِّباتٌ قَدْ أَحْمَدُوهَا وَمَا فيِ
هَا مُرَاءٍ لِمَأْرَبٍ أَوْ مُرَادِي

30. It is no wonder the mistress of the palace does not
Do anything but the befitting and right

٣٠. لَيْسَ بِدْعاً وَرَبَّة القْصْرِ لاَ تَفْ
عَلُ غَيْرَ الْخَلِيقِ بالإِحْمَادِ

31. A chaste one representing virtue in her
Pure whiteness like clear spilled water

٣١. غَادَةٌ مَثَّل الْعَفَافُ بِهَا الْحُسْ
نَ نَقِيّا صَفْواً كَماءِ العِهَادِ

32. All signs of her nobility come
From the perfection of reason and gentleness of heart

٣٢. كُلُّ آيَاتِ نُبْلِهَا صَادِرَاتٌ
عَنْ تَمَامِ الْحِجَى وَرِفْقِ الْفُؤَادِ

33. O descendant of generous ones whose origin
Goes back in status to immemorial nobility

٣٣. يَا سَلِيلَ الْكِرَامِ مِنْ عُنْصُرٍ يُرْ
جِعُ فِي جَاهِهِ إِلى آمَادِ

Who came in his time from singular ones

٣٤. وَأَدِيباً بَيْنَ السَّرَاةِ غَرِيباً
جَاءَ فِي جِيلِهِ مِنَ الأَفْرادِ

35. And excellence itself in the art of songwriting
Following and innovating over most guided paths

٣٥. وَمُجِيداً فَنَّ السَّماعِ اتِّباعاً
وَابْتِدَاعاً عَلَى أَجَلِّ المَبَادِي

36. So when he composes prose in the style of Al-Shawkanī
In his singing or the verse of the Shāwanī

٣٦. فَإِذَا مَا اسْتَوْحَى فَنَثْرَ الشَّواكِي
فِي أَغَارِيدِهِ وَنَظْمُ الشَّوَادِي

37. May your eye delight in your Lord’s bounty and recite
The Chapter of Good News in the faces of His servants

٣٧. قِرَّ عَيْناً بِفَضْلِ رَبِّك وَاقْرَأْ

٤١. أَدَبٌ رَائِعٌ وَعِلْمٌ وَفِيرٌ
وَحَدِيثٌ عَذْبٌ وَلُطْفٌ بَادِي

42. And modesty with pride with decency
Learned from her father and mother

٤٢. وَحَيَاءٌ فِي عِزَّةٍ فِي احْتِشَامٍ
مِنْ أَبِيهَا وَأُمِّها مُسْتَفَادِ

43. Verily this day of union was a promise
Between the two spirits before birth

٤٣. إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْوِصَالِ هَذَا لَوَعْدٌ
كَانَ بَيْنَ الرُّوحَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْوِلاَدِ

44. It delighted whatever delighted of hearts
And purified the sky of serenity from all clouds

٤٤. سَرَّ مَا سَرَّ مِنْ قُلُوبٍ وَأَجْلَى
عَنْ سَمَاءِ الصَّفاءِ كُلَّ ارْبِدَادِ

45. And it completed blessings that there be the likes
Of commoners - the lot of many

٤٥. وَأَتَمَّ النَّعمَاءَ أَنْ كَانَ فِيهِ
مِثْلَ حَظِّ السَّرَاةِ حَظُّ السَّوَادِ

46. How can an eye perceive light if
Its whiteness does not mix with blackness?

٤٦. كَيْفَ تَحْظَى بِالنُّور عَيْنٌ إِذَا لَمْ
يَتَكَامَلْ بَيَاضَهَا بِالسَّوَادِ

47. Not many of benefaction but few
In avoiding harm and returning favors

٤٧. مَا كَثِيرُ الإِحسانِ إِلاَّ قَلِيلٌ
فِي تَفَادِي الأَذَى وَرَدِّ نَآدِ

48. And with some reform of a decent one's trait
A predicament of corruption is avoided

٤٨. وَبِبَعْضِ الإِصْلاَحِ مِنْ شَأْنِ عَافٍ
يُتَّقى طَائِلٌ مِنَ الإِفْسَادِ

49. That is what a decent one answers
Whenever conscience calls him eternally

٤٩. ذَلِكُمْ مَا بِهِ يُجِيبُ نَجِيبٌ
أَبَداً دَاعِيَ الضَّميرِ المُنَادِي

50. Is there someone decent when people called him
Except one who has the position of rank there

٥٠. هَلْ نَجِيبٌ وَقَدْ نَدَا النَّاسَ إِلاَّ
مَنْ لَهُ حَيْثُ كَانَ صَدْرُ النَّادِي

51. And the highest class in the assembly
And his value increases with affection

٥١. وَلَهُ فِي التَّجلَّةِ الرِّتبَةُ العُلْيَا
وَيَزْدَادُ قَدْرُهَا بِالوِدَادِ

52. Of resolute sight set on distant goals
And a face smiling early at dawn

٥٢. هُوَ فِي القَومِ وَاحِدٌ بِعُلاَهُ
جَاءَ فِي فَتْرَةٍ مِنَ الآحَادِ

53. With manners cloaking advice - if he says it
Giving direction - with politeness

٥٣. ذُو مَقَامٍ بِنَفْسِهِ وَكَثِيراً
مَا يَكُونُ المَقَامُ بِالإِسْنَادِ

54. Ambition which no hesitation nor avoidance impedes
And not all wishes are attained abruptly

٥٤. عَرَفَتْ قَدرَهُ البِلاَدُ فَأَعْلَتْ
قَدْرَهُ فَوْقَ مَطْمَعِ الأَنْدَادِ

55. But with determination that does not bend or relent
Sometimes with a soft touch of smooth fingers in it

٥٥. نَظَرٌ فِي العُلَى بَعِيدٌ مَرَامِي
هِ وَوَجْهٌ يَبَشُّ بِالقُصَّادِ

56. There is power not found in millstones
Sometimes with a word whispered but

٥٦. أَدَبٌ يُلْبِسُ المَلاَمَاتِ ظَرْفاً
إِنْ يَقُلْهَا فِي مَعْرِضِ الإِرْشَادِ

57. Its impact beyond the impact of yelling

٥٧. هِمَّة لاَ يَعُوقُهَا عَنْ مَدَاهَا
عَائِقٌ مِن تَرَدُّدٍ أَوْ تَفَادِي

٥٨. وَالأَمَانِيُّ لَيْسَ تُدْرَكُ وَثْباً
بَلْ بِعَزْمٍ لاَ يَنْثَنِي وَاطِّرَادِ

If a garden of eloquence blossomed in the East

٦٢. صَادِقُ الْوَعْدِ صِدْقَ حُرٍّ وَلَكِنْ
قَدْ يُرَى وَهْوَ مُخْلِفُ الإِيعَادِ

63. From his thickets in the uninhabited area
What thing is more craved by the soul than

٦٣. وَلَهُ فِي سِيَاسَةِ النَّاسِ وَحْيٌ
شَفَّ عَنْ رَأْي حَاذِقٍ نَقَّادِ

64. Listening to his wild ducks - and the pouring of a Chanter?
Pride for a nation with glory - its pride

٦٤. رُبَّما خِلْتَ أَنَّه مُسْتَشَاطٌ
غَضَباً وَهْوَ سَاكِنُ الطَّبعِ هَادِي

65. In nobilities and glories
May God have mercy on you, O Najeeb, a father you

٦٥. أَوْ ظَنَنْتَ الطَّرِيقَ غَيْرَ الَّتِي يَسْ
لُكُهَا وَهْوَ فِي طَرِيقِ السَّدَادِ

66. Represented with meanings of generosity
Which remainder persists in the page of praise?

٦٦. يَبْلُغُ الأَمْرَ بِالتَّقاصُرِ لاَ يَبْ
لُغُهُ غَيْرُهُ بِطُولِ النِّجادِ

67. More enduring than professions your hand immortalized
The day armies prostrate in battle

٦٧. رُبَّ لَحْظٍ مِنٍ نَاعِمِ الظَّفرِ فِيهِ
سَطْوَةٌ لاَ تَكُونُ فِي الآسَادِ

68. And the face of earth is covered with corpses
And Damascus sighs under universal calamities

٦٨. رُبَّ قَوْلٍ يُخَافَتُ الصَّوْتُ فيهِ
وَاقِعٌ فَوْقَ مَوْقِعِ الإِرْغَادِ

69. Engulfing the valleys and deserts
O what a catastrophe has befallen my people

٦٩. رُبَّ رَأْيٍ أَنالَ مَا لَمْ يَنَلْهُ
بَطْشُ غَازٍ بِعَسْكَرٍ وَعَتَادِ

70. Exhausting them in their cities and outskirts
Whenever what depicts it or what brings

٧٠. طَالِبُ الصَّعبِ وَالنَّصيرُ نَجِيبٌ
لَيْسَ تَعْدُوهُ عَنْ نَجَاحٍ عَوَادِي

71. It close renews, I remember it with shuddering
Unprecedented severity every day -

٧١. كُلُّ آوٍ إِلَى نَجِيبٍ فَقَدْ لاَ
ذَ بِرُكْنِ النَّدَى وَحِصْنِ الذِّيَادِ

72. Beyond what they told of the years of droughts
Every situation fear displaced until

٧٢. كُلُّ عِلمٍ وَكُلُّ فَنٍّ مُصِيبٌ
فِي ذَرَاهُ حَظّاً مِنَ الإِمْدَادِ

73. The latter ones denied the ways back
Hunger did in souls a deed

٧٣. وَلَهُ فِي النَّوَالِ مُبْتَكَرَاتٌ
شَمِلَتْ كُلَّ نَاطِقٍ بِالضَّادِ

The last effort of the dying was spent

٧٤. إِنْ بِالشَّرْقِ رَوْضَةً مِنْ بَيَانٍ
بَرَزَتْ مِنْ حِلاَهُ فِي أَبْرَادِ

75. In a prostration to one of tyranny
My soul's eagerness for thousands killed

٧٥. أَيُّ شَيءٍ أَشْهَى إِلَى النَّفسِ مِنْ
إِنصاتِ أَطْيَارِهَا وَفَيَّاضُ شَادِي

76. Of starving women and children
And men crumpled due to emaciation who before

٧٦. خَيْرُ فَخْرٍ لأُمَّة ذَاتِ مَجْدٍ
فَخْرُهَا بِالأَكَارِمِ الأَمْجَادِ

77. Were like strong pillars
None survived besides those few who

٧٧. رَحِمَ اللهُ يا نَجِيبُ أَباً مَثَّلْ
تَ فِيهِ مِنْ مَعَانٍ جِيادِ

78. Were secretly saved by patriots’ generosity
So they ransomed them from death though they

٧٨. أَيُّ بَاقٍ فِي صَفْحَةِ الحَمْدِ أَبْقَى
مِنْ مَسَاعٍ خَلَّدْتهَا وَأَيَادِ

79. Were at death's edge, most generous ransomer
And protected honors from disgrace -

٧٩. يَوْمَ تُصْلَى مَمَالِكُ الأَرضِ حَرْباً
وَيُغَطَّى وَجْهُ الثَّرَى بِجِسَادِ

80. Helped, not stingy with aid
My country, is there in agony like

٨٠. وَيَئِنُّ الشَّآمُ تَحتَ كُرُوبٍ
شَامِلاَتِ الأَغوارِ وَالأنْجَادِ

81. The kinds of enslavement you suffered?
What misery rivals the misery of a house

٨١. يَا لَهَا نَكبَةً بِقوْمِيَ حَلَّتْ
أَرْهَقَتْهُمْ فِي مُدْنِهِمْ وَالبَوَادِي

82. Upon which corruption compounds corruption?
Every army that rose in it under pretext

٨٢. كُلَّمَا جَدَّ مَا يُصَوِّرُهَا لِي
أَو يُدَانِي ذَكْرُتُهَا بِارْتِعَادِ

83. Of fighting an aggressor only enabled aggression
Or came victorious yet disgraceful gratitude

٨٣. فَاقَ فِيها بِشِدَّةٍ كُلُّ يَومٍ
مَا حَكَوْا عَنْ سَبْعِ السِّنِينَ الشِّدَادِ

84. The victorious demands of his soldiers
That chronic malady of renegades’ rebellion

٨٤. كُلُّ حَالٍ أَحَالَهَا الذُّعْرُ حَتَّى
أَنْكَرَتْ أُخْرَيَاتِهِنَّ المَبَادِي

85. Gathering helpers, camel herders and carriers
When one assumes leading a people temporarily

٨٥. فَعَلَ الجُوعُ فِي النُّفوسِ فِعالاً
عَادَ مِنها الأَحْرَارُ كالأَوْغَادِ

86. Then hands over the leadership to his adversary
Disregard eras of humiliation in souls

٨٦. آخِرُ الْجَهْدِ رَاحَ يُنْفِقُهُ المَائِ
تُ فِي سَجْدَةٍ لِذِي اسْتِبْدَادِ

87. Of ill preparedness and susceptibility
And recall what sequence of humiliation murders

٨٧. لَهْفَ نَفْسِي عَلَى أُلُوفٍ تُوُفُّوا
مِنْ جِياعِ النِّساءِ وَالأَوْلاَدِ

88. Aspirations in people, and oppression and subjugation
You see what events left of an ancient nation

٨٨. وَرِجَالٍ دُكُّوا لِفَرْطِ هُزَالٍ
وَهُمُ قَبْلَ ذَاكَ كالأَطْوَادِ

89. With long standing chains and shackles
In a country that beginnings were civilizations, glory,

٨٩. مَا نَجَا غَيرُ مَنْ تَدَارَكَ مِنْهُمْ
فِي خَفَاءٍ نَدَى هُمامٍ جَوَادِ

90. Yet we became in the ruins
You see what disunity of a people dragged along

٩٠. فَفَدَاهُمْ مِنَ المَنُونِ وَكَانُوا
بَيْنَ أَيْدِي المَنُونِ أَكْرَمُ فَادِي

91. Of hatred’s severed ties
Is this dispersal in everything how they

٩١. وَأَقَالَ الأَعْرَاضَ مِنْ عَثَرَاتٍ
مُسْتَعَانٌ مَا ضَنَّ بِالإِنْجَادِ

92. Gather forces to confront enemies?
Or do they see it an achievement, boasting of

٩٢. يَا بِلاَدِي هَلْ فِي الْعَنَاءِ كَمَا عَا
نَيْتِهِ مِنْ ضُرُوبِ الاسْتِعْبَادِ

93. Their forefathers’ building from eras of Aad?

٩٣. أَيُّ تَعْسٍ كَتَعْسِ دَارٍ عَلَيْهَا
يَتَوَالَى الفَسَادُ بَعْدَ الفَسَادِ

نَةِ بَاغٍ جَمِّ النَّدَى كَيَّادِ

97. And hearts unified like ours in solidarity
May a day come and may it be soon

٩٧. إِذْ تَوَلَّى قِيَادَ قَوْمٍ لِحِينٍ
ثُمَّ أَلْقى لِخَصْمِهِ بِالْقِيَادِ

98. When God grants honor to the countries and fulfils
For its most valued the intended aim

٩٨. عَدِّ عَمَّا تُجِدُّ أَدْهَارُ ذُلٍّ
فِي نُفُوسٍ مِنْ سُوءِ الاِسّتِعْدَادِ

99. My friend, what I said about you is true
And I permanently rely on truth

٩٩. وَاذَّكِرْ مَا يُمِيتُ مِنْ هِمَمِ النَّ
اسِ تَوَالِي مَهَانَةٍ وَاضْطِهَادِ

100. I said it out of friendship and when
Your signs increase, it increases my friendship

١٠٠. تَرَ مَا أَبْقَتِ الْحَوَادِثُ مِنْ شَعْ
بٍ قَدَيمِ الأَغْلاَلِ وَالأَصْفَادِ

101. And nothing is more lovable to me in a person
Than what he has of good repute among his people

١٠١. فِي بِلاَدٍ كُنَّ الأَوَائِلَ عُمْرا
ناً وَعِزّاً فَصِرْنَ فِي الأَبْلاَدِ

102. And I think highly of a young man by
The extent of what his efforts do for the country

١٠٢. تَرَ مَا جَرَّهُ عَلَى وَحْدَةِ الْقَوْ
مِ انْفِكَاكُ العُرَى مِنَ الأَحْقَادِ

103. I have no ulterior motive or agenda
Other than this principle or consequence

١٠٣. أَبِهَذَا الشَّتاتِ فِي كُلُّ شَيْءٍ
يَجْمَعُونَ القُوَى لِصَدِّ أَعَادِي

١٠٤. أَمْ يَرَوْنَ البِنَاءَ أَنْ يَتَبَاهَوْا
بِبِنَاءِ الآبَاءِ مِنْ عَهْدِ عَادِ

١٠٥. تلْكَ حَالٌ وَقَدْ رَآهَا نَجيبٌ
دَارَكَ الْجُرْحَ بالأَسَا وَالضِّمادِ

١٠٦. وَلَهُ في الذَّمَاءِ أَيُّ رَجَاءٍ
وَلَهُ بالْبَقَاءِ أَيُّ اعْتدَادِ

١٠٧. مَنْ لَنَا أَن نرَى تَحَقُقَ حُلمٍ
لَيْسَ بابْن الْكَرَى بَل ابْنِ السُّهَادِ

١٠٨. أُمَّة عنْدَ ظَنِّنا تَتَآخَى
وَقُلُوبٌ كَهَمِّنا في اتِّحادِ

١٠٩. عَلَّ يَوْماً وَلاَ يَكُونُ بَعيداً
يَلْتَقي وَالمُنَى عَلَى ميعَادِ

١١٠. فَيُعِزَّ اللهُ البِلاَدَ وَيَقْضِي
لأَعِزَّائِهَا بِنُجْحِ المُرَادِ

١١١. يَا صَدِيقِي مَا قُلْتُهُ فِيكَ حَقٌ
وَعَلَى الْحَقِّ مَا حَيِيتُ اعْتِمَادِي

١١٢. قُلْتُهُ عَنْ صَدَاقَةٍ وَإِذَا آ
يَاتُكَ ازْدَدْنَ فَهْوَ رَهْنُ ازْدِيَادِ

١١٣. وَأَنَالاَ أُحِبُّ فِي المرْءِ إِلاَّ
مَا لَهُ عِنْدَ قَوْمِهِ مِنْ أَيَادِي

١١٤. وَأُجِلُّ الفَتَى عَلَى قَدْرِ مَا جَلَّ
تْ مَسَاعِيهِ فِي سَبِيلِ الْبِلاَدِ

١١٥. لَيْسَ لِي مَطْمَعٌ وَلاَ لِيَ دِينٌ
غَيْرُ هَذَا لِمَبْدَإٍ أَوْ مَعَادِ
