1. O honorable ones emerging from their prisons
And gladdening every heart that was grieving

2. How much was right shackled in ignominy
Then it retreated, and the heroism of the brave was defeated

3. O evil fate whose decline preceded its ascent
Egypt, in which humiliation casts its shadow

4. The power of the lion is lost to the harm of wolves within it
And the matter twists with dissolution and prohibition

5. So today one who thought its region was for debasement
Returned to an opinion that honors it

6. You have shown a strength in it, your resilience
Wards off the fiercest assailants from it

7. Can gratitude suffice for the injustice borne
Yesterday by one of you, diminished in his view?

8. They have sinned—and how many exemplary deaths
Befell the innocent and the virtuous, unlawfully

9. And some of what they punished you for was your making
Truth of passion a religion and teaching

10. No ruler except what your consciences inspired
You monitor without heeding the ruled

11. You have succeeded in what is nearest for you
Of aspirations, so triumph is not presumed

12. Has an age been set right which
Its sons rectified with patience and daring?

13. Or has a people attained the freedom they deserved
While they are indifferent to murder and gagging?

14. O masters lofty of station like stars
And ladies assembled as a necklace of pearls

15. Thanks for your coming this way and your assembly
Congratulating the glorious preceding ones

16. Those who turned from a duty and so built
For Egypt’s glory what was ruined

17. If some of their merit has traces
Then how much of their beauty remains concealed?

18. So may Egypt live, and we revere
Its virtuous ones, honoring them in love
