در في سمائك يا قضاء فإن يثر

1. Turn in your heavens, O fate, though it stir up
regrets, yet their destiny is in the grave.

١. دُرْ فِي سَمَائِكَ يَا قَضَاءُ فَإِنْ يَثُرْ
بِكَ عِثْيَرٌ فَقَرَارُهُ فِي لَحْدِهِ

2. Who seek the bright sun with offence, thou wilt
pity them though they err, and guide them.

٢. مَنْ يَبْتَغِي الشَّمْسَ المُنِيرَةَ بِالأَذَى
تَرْأَفْ بِهِ مَهْمَا يَضِلُّ وَتَهْدِهِ

3. If one aggrieved should cast thee with his rancour,
then submit thee and let not his shot of rancour reach thee.

٣. إِنْ يَرْمِكَ الشَّاكِي بِحِقْدٍ عِنْدَهُ
فَاسْلَمْ وَلا تَبْلُغْكَ رَمْيَةُ حِقْدِهِ

4. Whoso hath forged false judgments, he was no
avenger, but a critic, so let him shew his critique.

٤. مَنْ زَيَّفَ الأَحْكَامَ لَمْ يَكُ نَاقِماً
بَلْ نَاقِداً فَلْيُبْدِ حُجَّةَ نَقْدِهِ

5. Of what worth is random speech, for however
it be bare it booteth not.

٥. مَا قِيمَةُ القَوْلِ الجُزَافِ فَإِنَّهُ
مَهْمَا يَخَلْهُ مُجْدِياً لَمْ يُجْدِهِ

6. O thou that judgest without measure! thou hast
not hit what thou wouldst hope for, save disappointment of thy

٦. يَا كَائِلاً فِي غَيْرِ كَيْلٍ لَمْ يُصِبْ
مِمَّا يُرَجِّي غَيْرَ خَيْبَةِ قَصْدِهِ

7. purpose.
If fate would take thee with his justice, thou

٧. لَوْ كَانَ يَأْخُذُكَ القَضَاءُ بِعَدْلِهِ
لَمْ تُلْفَ مُجْتَرِئاً عَلَيْهِ لِرَدِّهِ

8. wouldst not be found insolent in defiance of him.
But thou hast taken of his clemency a pasture

٨. لَكِنْ أَصَبْتَ الحِلْمَ مِنْهُ مَرْتَعاً
فَمَضَيْتَ فِيهِ إِلَى تَجَاوُزِ حَدِّهِ

9. ground, so thou wentest therein unto exceeding his limit.
Whatso more thou desirest to complain of, add

٩. مَا شِئْتَ مِنْ شَكْوَاكَ زِدْهُ فَإِنَّمَا
شَكْوَاكَ مِنْهُ ايَةٌ مِنْ حَمْدِهِ

10. it! for thy complaints of him are but signs of his praise.
Our brothers, you have a claim upon us which

١٠. إِخْوَانَنَا لَكُمُ عَلَيْنَا ذِمَّةُ
رُعِيَتْ فَمَا بالُ الوَفَاءِ وَعَهْدِهِ

11. hath been regarded. Where then is loyalty and his troth?
I wondered at a sensible one of thy folk

١١. إِنِّي عَجِبْتُ لِعَاقِلٍ مِنْ رَهْطِكُمْ
مُبْدٍ جَمِيلاً وَهْوَ مُضْمِرُ ضِدِّهِ

12. shewing graceful but hiding despite within himself.
If ye demand justice of fate according to your love, justice is

١٢. إِنْ تَطْلُبُوا عَدْلَ القَضَاءِ كَوُدِّكُمْ
فَالعَدْلُ لَيْسَ كَوُدِّكُمْ وَكَوُدِّهِ

13. not as your love or his.
Is justice a thing transcending the judgment of

١٣. أَلعَدْلُ شَيْءٌ فَوْقَ حِسْبَةِ سَيِّدٍ
فِي قَوْمِهِ أَوْ قَائِدٍ فِي جُنْدِهِ

14. chief among his folk or leader of his army?
Is justice an absolute thing? Whoso undertaketh

١٤. أَلعَدْلُ شَيْءٌ مُطْلَقٌ مَنْ يَلْتَزِمْ
تَجْنِيسَهُ يَفْسُدْ عَلَيْهِ وَيُرْدِهِ
