1. In my heart is a sorrow like yours,
And my eyelids are as heavy with sleep as yours.

2. How can I not shed a tear when
I have always been a prisoner of your love?

3. O noble youth, so many
Join me in mourning for you.

4. How many learned, virtuous men
Strive in their fields as hard as you strove.

5. You were supreme among your peers,
As your country was supreme among lands.

6. In defending the faith you were
A rising star tracing your lofty goals.

7. But fate cast you down from your saddle,
Do not let despair sway your reins.

8. It is kind to mourn one you weep for, so long
As grief strengthens, and does not misguide, your heart.

9. You left a child no older than your sorrow,
Needing care to replace your fatherly watch.

10. Give him all the tenderness your shade nursed,
And teach him to walk the paths his father trod.

11. This verse for God, if added to,
Will be the best provision on your child’s road.

12. O God, unite us though parted by sorrow,
You know best, my God, what we need.

13. Comfort the bereaved in their loneliness,
And incline their steps towards your guidance.
