1. How are you broken, O flag,
As that flag folds,
١. كَيْفَ قُوِّضْتَ يَا عَلَمْ
وَانْطَوَى ذَلِكَ العَلَمْ
2. The towering mountain laments its lion,
So it is in deep mourning.
٢. ثَكِلَ الطَّوْدُ لَيْثَهُ
فَهْوَ فِي مَأْتَمٍ عَمَمْ
3. My soul yearns for the virtuous youth,
The brave and noble man.
٣. لَهْفَ نَفْسِي عَلَى الفَقِي
دِ فَتَى الْبَأْسِ وَالْكَرَمْ
4. His face is most beautiful,
His speech most fragrant.
٤. أَرْوَعٌ وَجْهُهُ أَغَرُّ
وَعِرْنِينُهُ أَشَمْ
5. If the glory of Lebanon was personified in him,
It would have been embodied.
٥. لَوْ تَجَلَّى إِبَاءُ لُبْنَ
انَ فِي شَخْصِهِ ارْتَسَمْ
6. Eyes rain their tears
And the firm mountains soften.
٦. أَنْصَبَتْ دَمْعَهَا العُيُو
نُ وَلانَتْ صَفَا الأَكَمْ
7. And the dawn of hopes shines
In hearts and thoughts.
٧. وَدَجَا فِي القُلُوبِ صُبْحُ الْ
أَمَانِي وَادْلَهَمّْ
8. Who after him
Will wield that pen,
٨. مَنْ تُرَى بَعْدَ خَطْبِهِ
حَامِلاً ذَلِكَ الْقَلَمْ
9. The pen of the candid adviser
That awakens determination,
٩. قَلَمَ النَّاصِحِ الْجَرْي
ءِ الَّذِي يُوقِظُ الْهِمَمْ
10. The pen of the outspoken
That reveals injustice when supporting truth.
١٠. أَلصَّريحِ الَّذِي إِذَا
نَاصَرَ الْحَقَّ مَا احْتَشَمْ
11. Pure in opinion, never
Placing himself in suspicion's position.
١١. كَانَ فِي المَعْرِضِ السِّرَا
جَ الَّذِي يَكْشِفُ الظُّلَمْ
12. Balanced in action, his values
Weighed when values are weighed.
١٢. طَاهِرَ الرَّأْيِ لَمْ يَضَعْ
نَفْسَهُ مَوْضِعَ التُّهَمْ
13. He taught the people how
Pacts are honored and commitments kept.
١٣. رَاجِحَ الفِعْلِ قِيمَةً
عِنْدَ مَا تُوزَنُ الْقِيَمْ
14. He taught the people that whoever
Dislikes tyranny does not oppress.
١٤. عَلَّمَ الشَّعْبَ كَيْفَ تُرْ
عَى عُهُودٌ وَتُلْتَزَمْ
15. He taught the people how
Ideals are attained and summits stormed.
١٥. عَلَّمَ الشَّعْبَ أَنَّ مَنْ
كَرِهَ الضَّيْمَ لَمْ يَضُمْ
16. He taught the people that
Cowardice's miserable end is regret.
١٦. عَلَّمَ الشَّعْبَ كَيْفَ تُرْ
قَى المَعَالِي وَتُقْتَحَمْ
17. He taught the people that a free man
Is worth a thousand slaves.
١٧. عَلَّمَ الشَّعْبَ أَنَّ لِلْ
جُبْنِ غِبّاً هُوَ النَّدَمْ
18. He taught the people that with determination
What fate dictates can be matched.
١٨. عَلَّمَ الشَّعْبَ أَنَّ حُرّاً
بِأَلْفٍ مِنَ الْخَدَمْ
19. A guardian like him, if
The nation bows, it will rise.
١٩. عَلَّمَ الشَّعْبَ أَنَّ بِالسَّ
عْيِ مَا يَعْدِلُ القِسَمْ
20. A deputy who awakened fervor
And from truth did not sleep.
٢٠. صُحُفِيٌّ بِمِثْلِهِ
إِنْ كَبَتْ تَنْهَضُ الأُمَمْ
21. Firm in peril, ascendant
At the highest of peaks.
٢١. نَائِبٌ أَيْقَظَ الْحِمَى
وَعَنِ الْحَقِّ لَمْ يَنَمْ
22. He was not the cunning
Minister who rouses resentment.
٢٢. رَابِطُ الْجَأْشِ ثَابِتٌ
وَهْوَ فِي أَرْفَعِ الْقِمَمْ
23. Deceiving the people with pretense
And what is underneath the surface.
٢٣. لَمْ يَكُنْ ذَلِكَ الْوَزِي
رِ الَّذِي يَحْفِزُ الذِّمَمْ
24. But when the Most High's decree descends
And He does not toss,
٢٤. يَخْدَعُ النَّاسَ بِالْبُرو
قِ وَمَا تَحْتَهَا دِيَمْ
25. After Zakkour who can
Match the lion's leap into the fray,
٢٥. فَإِذَا أَدْرَكَ المَرَا
مَ تَعَالَى وَلَمْ يَرِمْ
26. And who has the insight of the wise
When making the choice.
٢٦. بَعْدَ زَكُّورَ مَنْ لَهُ
وَثْبَةُ اللَّيْثِ فِي الْقُحَمْ
27. A breeze humbling the winds,
For the resolute and firm.
٢٧. وَلَهُ صَوْلَةُ المُطَا
عِ اخْتِيَاراً إِذَا حَكَمْ
28. The people have no leader
Guiding with truth, though some pretend.
٢٨. لأُولِي العَزْمِ وَالنُّهَى
نَسَمٌ تُخْضِعُ النَّسَمْ
29. And most beloved are those who shepherd
Nations, after shepherding sacred bounds.
٢٩. لَيْسَ لِلشَّعْبِ قَائِداً
بِالهُدَى كُلُّ مَنْ زَعَمْ
30. I lament a family
Whose firm pillar collapsed.
٣٠. وَأَحَبُّ الأُولَى رَعَوْا
أُمَماً مَنْ رَعَى الحُرَمْ
31. A loyal wife
Whose rope of hope snapped.
٣١. أَنَا أَرْثِي لأُسْرَةٍ
رُكْنُهَا الرَّاسِخُ انْهَدَمْ
32. And little children
Stung by the pain of orphanhood.
٣٢. وَلِزَوْجٍ وَفِيَّةٍ
حَبْلُ آمَالِهَا انْفَصَمْ
33. Then I complain, anguished,
Of the pain I suffer.
٣٣. وَصِغَارٍ يُحَنَّكُو
نَ بِصَابٍ مِنَ اليَتَمْ
34. He was a bosom friend I lost,
So I lost boundless bounty.
٣٤. ثُمَّ أَشْكُو مُفَجَّعاً
مَا أُعَانِي مِنَ الأَلَمْ
35. My solace when distant,
My joy when nearby.
٣٥. هُوَ خِدْنٌ فَقَدْتُهُ
فَقَدْ مَأْثُورَةِ النِّعَمْ
36. O you who deny the moon
Can be diminished, beware!
٣٦. كَانَ شَجْوِي إِذَا نَأَى
وَسُرُورِي إِذَا أَلَمْ
37. No blame, as this
Is the way of fate since ancient times.
٣٧. أَيُّهَا المُنْكِرُونَ أَنْ
يَنْقُصَ الْبَدْرُ تَمّْ
38. Michel aimed for a goal
That whoever contended, collided.
٣٨. لا عِتَابٌ وَهَذِهِ
سُنَّةُ الدَّهْرِ مِنْ قِدَمْ
39. Liberating a homeland is not
Easy for whoever pretends.
٣٩. رامَ مِيشَالُ غَايَةً
مَنْ تَصَدَّى لَهَا ارْتَطَمْ
40. Except by both parties spending wealth
And shedding blood,
٤٠. لَيْسَ تَحْرِيرُ مَوْطِنٍ
بِيَسِيرٍ لِمَنْ زَعَمْ
41. Or a sudden onslaught
With no warning or illness.
٤١. دُونَهُ الْحَازِبَانِ مِنْ
بَذْلِ مَالٍ وَسَفْكِ دَمْ
42. The departed persevered stubbornly
Without wearying.
٤٢. أَوْ حِمَامٌ مُفَاجِيءٌ
لا نَذِيرٌ وَلا سَقَمْ
43. Certain that the life of ignominy
Is not better than oblivion.
٤٣. شَدَّ مَا كَابَدَ الْفَقِي
دُ دَؤُوباً بِلا سَأَمْ
44. So he passed while exerting himself
And what he sought were nations.
٤٤. مُوقِناً أَنَّ عِيشَةَ الذَّ
لِّ لا تَفْضُلُ الْعَدَمْ
45. With his soul, then with his soul
He began life and ended it.
٤٥. فَقَضَى وَهْوَ فِي الْجِهَا
دِ وَمَطْلُوبُهُ أَمَمْ
46. So his share today
Is of eternity and glory.
٤٦. بِالْفِدَى ثُمَّ بِالفِدَى
بَدَأَ الْعُمْرَ واخْتَتَمْ
٤٧. فَلَهُ الْيَوْمَ قِسْطُهُ
مِنْ خُلودٍ وَمِنْ عِظَمْ
