دع الخمر نصح أخ إنها

1. Leave the wine, the advice of a brother,
It confuses hearts and leads virtue astray,

١. دَعِ الخَمْرَ نُصْحُ أَخٍ إِنَّهَا
لَتُوهِي القلوبَ وَترْدِي النَّهى

2. Wherever you find ruin and misery,
And know not whence they came, suspect it,

٢. وَحَيْثُ وَجَدْتَ دَمَاراً وَبُؤْساً
وَلَمْ تَدرِ مَأْتَاهُما ظُنَّهَا

3. Was it not that which destroyed,
Homes by undermining their pillars?

٣. أَما هِيَ تِلْكَ الَّتِي خَرَّبَتْ
بُيُوتاً بِتَقْويضِهَا رُكْنَهَا

4. Was it not that which shook,
Nations and razed their cities?

٤. أَما هِيَ تِلْكَ الَّتِي ضَعْضَعَتْ
شُعُوباً وَدَكَّتْ بِهَا مُدْنَهَا

5. All moral guides of every,
Generation, and prophets, warned against it,

٥. وَكُلُّ المُرَبِّينَ مِنْ كُلِّ جِيـ
ـلٍ وَكُلُّ النَّبِيِّينَ عَنْهَا نَهى

6. And the resolute bearers of Allah's commands denounced it,
And the wise never sanctioned it,

٦. وكلُّ أُولِي العزْمِ قَدْ سَبَّهَا
وَمَا فِي أُولِي الحَزمِ منْ سَنَّهَا

7. The zealous protectors of sanctity attacked it,
So the best openers declared war on it,

٧. عَلَيْهَا حُمَاةَ الحِجَى غَارَة
فَخَيْرُ أُولِي الفَتْحِ مَنْ شَنَّهَا

8. And cast the wine cups away,
Be sacrificed and protect not their faith,

٨. وَأَلقوا دِرَاكاً بِكَاسَاتِهَا
تُهَاضُ وَلا تَعْصِمُوا دِنَّهَا

9. Divorce the wanton that ruins strength,
And makes childless the mother of an only son,

٩. طَلاقاً لِشَمْطَاءَ تُوهِي القُوَى
وَتُثْكِلُ أُمًّ الوَحِيدِ ابْنَهَا

10. How strange that its lovers increase,
With the length of their years,

١٠. عَجيبٌ تَزَايَدَ عُشَّاقُهَا
بِقَدْرِ اسْتِطَالَتِهِمْ سِنَّها

11. Absolutely, categorically, with no way back,
And suffice a man his own madness,

١١. طَلاقاً بَتَاتاً بِلا رَجْعَةٍ
وَحَسْبُ امرِيءٍ جِنَّةً جِنَّها

12. And accept not the deceits of transgressors,
Who see its evil and see its good,

١٢. وَلا تَقْبَلوا تُرَّهَاتِ غُوَاةٍ
تَرى سُوءهَا وَتَرَى حُسْنَهَا

13. Exaggerate its benefit out of foolishness,
And elevate its status out of weakness,

١٣. تُعَظِّمُ عَنْ سَفَهٍ نَفْعَها
وَتَرْفَعُ مِنْ ضَعَةٍ شَأْنَهَا

14. Does not its abundance of harm,
Mean its Creator has cursed it?

١٤. أَلَيْسَ لِوَفْرَةٍ أَرْزَائِهَا
تَجَوَّزَ خَالِقُهَا لَعْنَهَا

15. So O youth of virtue, O best of those,
Through whom a nation regains its worth,

١٥. فَيَا فِتْيَةَ الخَيْرِ يَا خَيْرَ مَنْ
تُقِيمُ بِهِمْ أُمَّةٌ وَزْنَهَا

16. For Egypt, you are of good omen, if,
You are chaste, so do not betray its hopes,

١٦. لِمِصْرَ بِكُمْ حُسْنُ ظَنٍّ إِذَا
عَفَفْتُمْ فَلا تُخْلِفُوا ظَنَّها
