1. Praise be to God for the loss of one with high status
Who was unmatched in such status

١. لِلهِ أَحْمَدُ مِنْ فَقيدِ مَكَانَةٍ
قَدْ كانَ فِيهَا فَاقِدَ الأَمْثَالِ

2. No man has fulfilled the dress of advocacy
As was its rightful due

٢. لَمْ يُوفِ سِرْبَالَ المحَامَاةِ امْرُؤءٌ
إِيفَاءَهُ مَا حَقَّ لِلسِّرْبَالِ

3. With resolute determination, brilliant intelligence
And concordance of intent and words

٣. ماضِي العَزِيمَةِ ذُو ذَكَاءٍ باهِرٍ
مُتَوَافِقُ النِّياتِ وَالأَقْوَالِ

4. One who said encyclopedias of religious law were gathered
In the being of a chest that was no exaggerator

٤. مَنْ قَالَ مَوسُوعَاتُ شَرْعٍ جُمِّعتْ
فِي ذَاتِ صَدْرٍ لَمْ يَكُنْ بِمُغَالِي

5. The more extensive his acquisition
The more he toiled night and day

٥. يَزْدَادُ مَا طَالَ المَدى تَحْصِيلُهُ
وَيكُدُّ فِي الأَسْحَارِ وَالآصَالِ

6. And he remained seeking illumination for his mind
With the guidance of shining suns or the light of lamps

٦. وَيَظَلُّ مُلْتَمِساً إِنَارَةَ ذِهْنِهِ
بِهُدَى شُمُوسٍ أَوْ بِضَوْءٍ ذُبالِ

7. He refused affectation whether writing or speaking
And loved, in composition, nothing but the present style

٧. يَأُبَى التَّعمُّل كَاتِباً أوْ خَاطِباً
وَيُحِبُّ فِي الإنْشَاءِ غَيْرَ الحَالِي

8. He avoided ornaments in his words
Fearing obscurity and boredom

٨. يَتَجَنَّب الزينَاتِ فِي أَلْفَاظِهِ
حَذَرَ الغُمُوضِ وَخَشْيَةَ الإِمْلاَلِ

9. Or fearing ambiguity would shroud the evidence
With embellishment that makes it gleam

٩. أَوْ خَوْفَ أَنْ تَغْشَى الأَدِلَّةَ رِيبَةٌ
مِنْ زُخْرُفٍ تَبْدُو بِهِ وَصِقَالِ

10. Adversity tested him, but his resolve
Was firmly rooted like mountain peaks

١٠. عَرَكَتْهُ عَارِكَةُ الصُّرُوفِ فَعَزْمُهُ
مُتَمَكِّن كَشَوَامِخِ الأَجْبَالِ

11. Tribulation pleased him, so there was no opponent
To rival him the next morning in debate

١١. رَاضَتْهُ رَائِضَةُ الخُطُوبِ فَلَم يَكُنْ
قَرْمٌ يُسَاجِلهُ غَدَاةَ سِجَالِ

12. His prey was not to tear ferociously
With might or with wiles

١٢. مَا كَانَ أَصْيَدَهُ لأَنْفَرِ مَأْرَبِ
بِالْبَطْشِ وَهْوَ الرَّأيُ أَوْ بِخِتَالِ

13. His weakness was not made stronger by his silence
Until he could assault the titans

١٣. مَا كَانَ أَقْوَى ضَعْفَهُ بِسُكُوتِهِ
حَتَّى يَصُولَ بِهِ عَلَى الصُّوَّالِ

14. He did not make playthings of firmly prohibited things
As if they were on the banks of a brook

١٤. مَا كَانَ أَلْعَبَهُ بِرَاسِخَةِ النُّهى
فَكَأَنَّهنَّ عَلَى شَفَا مُنْهَالِ

15. How could a soul like that conceive
A time, though it was brief in recording

١٥. رُوحٌ كَتِلْكَ الروْحِ كَيْفَ تَصوَّرَتْ
زَمَناً وَإِنْ هُوَ قَلَّ فِي صَلْصَالِ

16. The expanse of existence was too confining for it, so it drew her
To the likeness of a shadow, next to a statue

١٦. ضَاقَتْ بِهَا سَعَةُ الوُجُودِ وَضَمَّها
فِي شِبْهِ طَيْفٍ جَانِبا تِمْثَالِ

17. The statue of glory in which one sees nothing
But an unlost, undimmed man

١٧. تِمْثَالِ مَجْدٍ لا تَرَى فِيهِ سِوَى
رَجُلٍ بِلاَ تِيهٍ وَلاَ إِدْلاَلِ

18. Short in stature, he filled eyes with veneration
And cast a shadow into hearts that was long

١٨. مُتَقَاصِرٍ مَلأَ العُيُونَ تَجِلَّةً
وَرَمَى بِظِلٍ فِي الْقُلُوبِ طُوَالِ

19. He walked with a slight body, and rarely
Were those of intellect anything but insignificant

١٩. يَخْتَالُ فِي الْجِسْمِ الضَّئِيلِ وَقَلَّمَا
كَانَتْ أُولُو الأَلْبَابِ غَيْرَ ضِئَالِ

20. His smiling face was ever upraised
Its meanings cleansed of murkiness

٢٠. يَعْلُو مُحَيَّاهُ ابْتِسَامٌ دَائِمٌ
بَرِئَتْ مَعَانِيهِ مِنَ الإِدْغَالِ

21. He accompanied life and, for one chary of sin,
Laughter completed, so it remained in beginnings

٢١. صَحِبَ الحَيَاةَ وَمَا بِهَا لأَخِي النُّهَى
ضَحِكٌ يَتِمُّ فَظَلَّ فِي اسْتِهْلاَلِ

22. His eyes did not tell, nor did the whitening of them,
Anything but the flashing in the crossing of swords

٢٢. عَيْنَاهُ لاَ يَحْكِي وَمِيضَ سَنَاهُمَا
إِلاَّ التَّألُّقُ فِي اشْتِبَاكِ نِصَالِ

23. The light of two lamps flowing from them
With electrification along flowing conduits

٢٣. مَا نُورُ مِصْبَاحَيْنِ يَجْرِي مِنْهُمَا
بِالْكَهْرَبَاءَةِ مَجْرَيَا سَيَّالِ

24. And you see him most often bowing down
A bowing of no timidity or pretentiousness

٢٤. وَتَرَاهُ أَكْثَرَ مَا تَرَاهُ مُطْرِقاً
إِطْرَاقَ لا وَجِلٍ وَلاَ مُخْتَالِ

25.
So he remains as one who lowers his gaze but has no eyelids

٢٥. فَيَظَلُّ كَالمُغْضِي وَلَيْسَ بِحَاجِبٍ
عيْنَيْهِ سِتْرٌ مُحْكَمُ الإِسْبَالِ

26. Veiling tightly drawn
To the melody flowing through it, his voice

٢٦. لِلْغُنَّة الجَارِي عَلَيْهَا صَوْتُهُ
تَأْثِيرُ سِحْرٍ فِي النُّفوسِ حَلاَلِ

27. Has an enchanting effect on souls, licitly
It elevates hearing, though its tone

٢٧. يَرْقَى السَّماعَ بِهَا وَإِنْ يَكُ نَبْرُهُ
لاَ يَرْتَقِي مَعْ فِكْرِهِ الْوَقَّالِ

28. Does not rise along with his keen mind
With a strength his dignity imparts, it imparts

٢٨. مِنْ قُوَّةٍ بِحِجَاهُ تَكْسِبُ قُوَّةً
فِي النَّفسِ تُوغِلُ أَيَّما إِيغَالِ

29. A strength in the soul penetrating however deep
With it he surpasses his rivals victoriously

٢٩. وَبِهَا يَبُزُّ مُنَافِسِيهِ ظَافِراً
وَبِهَا يُوَامِقُ رَاشِداً وَيُقَالِي

30. With it he transcends, excelling, and climbs higher

٣٠. يَا خَيْبَةَ الآمَالِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَيَا
غَبْنَ المَسَاعِي فِي دَرَاكِ مَعَالِي

31. Oh what disappointment of hopes in this life, oh
What loss of endeavors in attaining aspirations

٣١. دَاءٌ عَرَا فَانْدَكَّ طَوْدٌ شَامِخٌ
بِأَخَفَّ وَقْعاً مِنْ دَبِيبِ نِمَالِ

32. An illness spread and felled a towering pillar
With a blow lighter than the creeping of ants

٣٢. مَجْدٌ تَوَلاَّهُ الْعَفَاءُ وَقُوَّةٌ
قَهَّارَةٌ سَكَنَتْ مَهِيلَ رِمَالِ

33. Glory which time made away with, and formidable
Power that came to rest in the sands of deserts

٣٣. أَفْضَى الذَّكَاءُ إِلى صَفِيحٍ هَامِد
وَأَوَى المَضَاءُ إِلى ضَرِيحٍ خَالِي
