1. O you who lies in peace, upon you be peace
Thus rise the great men early morn
١. أَيُّهَا المُغْتَدِي عَلَيْكَ السَّلامُ
هَكَذَا يُبْكِرُ الرِّجَالُ العِظَامُ
2. The Nile was distressed by your death, and the pyramids humbled by your glory
The gloomy era was prolonged in Egypt, before your auspicious time came
٢. غَاضَ مِنْ رَوْعَهِ لِمَصْرَعِكَ النِّـ
ـيلُ وَغَضَّتْ مِنْ عُجْبِهَا الأَهْرَامُ
3. It is wondrous that its greatest sign should be, yet the days did not protect you
Rise O sky as many stars as you wish, the darkness will avenge your radiance
٣. طَالَتِ الفَتْرَةُ الْعَبُوسُ بِمِصْرٍ
قَبْلَ أَنْ جَاءَ عَهْدُكَ الْبَسَّامُ
4. Egypt's fortune decreed that monuments be immortalized in it, as flags crumple
The eminent are gone, no scholar, no warrior, no leader was spared
٤. عَجَبٌ أَنْ تَكُونَ آيتَهَا الْكُبْـ
ـرَى وَأَلاَّ تَصُونَكَ الأَيَّامُ
5. It is as if I see Ahmed's eulogy, no extent remains for sorrow, that was the epilogue
What solace is there for the mother of sons, even if they are many, when the generous are gone
٥. أَطْلِعي يَا سَمَاءُ مَا شِئْتِ مِنْ نَجْـ
ـمٍ سَيَقْتَص مِن سَنَاكَ الظَّلامُ
6. The pride of the country was incarnated in a genius, who assumed a peerless station from it
He aspired to a singular goal, and the prosperity of the country was that goal
٦. حَظُّ مِصْرَ قَضَى بِأَنْ تخْلُدَ الأَرْمَا
سُ فِيهَا وَتَهْوِيَ الأَعْلامُ
7. He was its discerning one, when opinion was sought, though without him the discerning are confused
He was its bold one, when the matter was difficult, and none undertook it but the intrepid
٧. ذَهَبَ النابِغُونَ لمْ يُعْفَ مِنْهُمُ
عَالِمٌ أَوْ مُجَاهِدٌ أَو إِمَامُ
8. He was whatever virtues required, in each case what the occasion necessitated
He was the tireless worker, while the people slumbered tranquilly
٨. وَكَأَنِّي بِخَطْبِ أَحْمَدَ لَمْ يُبْ
قِ مَدىً لِلأَسَى أَذَاكَ الْخِتَامُ
9. He was the writer whose prose captivates, it has splendor yet coherence
He was the scholar who unties the difficulties, no ambiguity remains nor vagueness
٩. مَا لأُمِّ الْبَنِينَ سَلْوَى وَإِنْ كَا
نُوا كَثِيراً إِذَا تَوَلَّى الْكِرَامُ
10. He was the arbiter from whom wisdom is derived and judgments preferred
He was the one of refined taste, whose listening gives joy, and in whose gaze inspiration appears
١٠. جَلَّ رُزْءُ الْبِلادِ فِي عَبْقَرِيٍّ
حَلَّ مِنْهَا مَكَانَةً لا تُرَامُ
11. One of two brothers from the Zaghlool family, and may glory suffice the potter as a companion
Which traits shall I recount, when much can be said
١١. عَاشَ يَرْمِي إِلَى مَرَامٍ وَحِيدٍ
وَصَلاحُ البِلادِ ذَاكَ المَرَامُ
12. Between honoring him, and our hopes in him, and eulogizing him, not a year passed
All those sublime praises accrued, and those great achievements amassed
١٢. كَانَ صَمْصَامَهَا إِذَا الْتُمِسَ الرَّأْ
يُ وَأَعْيَا مِنْ دُونِهِ الصَّمْصَامُ
13. And we compensated our eyes with the impact he left, so what the doves brought him
He in peace now lies, upon him be peace.
١٣. كَانَ مِقْدَامَهَا إِذَا أَعْضَلَ فَلَمْ الأَمْـ
ـرُ فَلَمْ يَضْطَلِعْ بِهِ مِقْدَامُ
١٤. كَانَ مَا شَاءَتِ الفَضَائِلُ فِي حَا
لٍ فحال وَمَا اقْتَضَاهُ المَقَامُ
١٥. فَهْوَ الْعَامِلُ المُسَهَّدُ فِي التَّحْصِي
لِ وَالقَوْمُ هَادِئونَ نِيامُ
١٦. وَهْوَ الكَاتِبُ الَّذِي يَنْثُرُ الد
ر لَهُ رَوْعَةُ وَفِيهِ انْسِجَامُ
١٧. وَهْوَ العَالِمُ الَّذِي يُسْلِسُ الصَّعْـ
ـبَ فَلاَ شُبْهَةٌ وَلا إِبْهَامُ
١٨. وَهْوَ الفَيْصَلُ الَّذِي تُؤْخَذُ الْحكْـ
ـمَةُ عَنْهُ وَتؤْثَرُ الأَحْكَامُ
١٩. وَهْوَ المِقْرَلُ الَّذِي يُطْرِبُ السَّمْـ
ـعَ وَيَبْدُو فِي لَحْظِهِ الإِلْهَامُ
٢٠. أَحَدُ الفَرْقَدَيْنِ مِنْ آلِ زَغْلُو
لَ وَحَسْبُ الفَخَارِ مَجْدٌ تُؤَامُ
٢١. أَيَّ أَوْصَافِهِ أُعَدِّدُ وَالشَّـ
ـيْءُ كَثِيرٌ فِيهِ الكَلامُ
٢٢. بَيْنَ إِكْرَامِهِ وَآمَالِنَا فِي
هِ وَبَيْنَ التَّأْبِينِ لَمْ يَخْلُ عَامُ
٢٣. كُلُّ تِلْكَ المَحَامِدِ الغُرِّ بَانَتْ
وَاسْتَقَرَّتْ تِلْكَ المَسَاعِي الجِسَامُ
٢٤. وَاسْتَعضْنَا مِنَ الْعُيُونِ بآثَا
رٍ فَلِلَّهِ مَا جَنَاهُ الْحِمَامُ
