More calamitous in the disaster that befell the single flag,

2. You confronted horsemen with the spear and made us grieve
For the valor and nobility the spear obscured,

3. You gave your people what none other gave
Of self, wealth, and valor,

4. And you were the first among them in every ransom
And the last among them in every battle's booty,

5. Yours is the eternity of memory and honor
In this world and the next, and herein lies true greatness.
