The master of eloquence whose works shine like stars,
١. قَضَى الأَدِيبُ الَّذِي تُسْتَنُّ سُنَّتُهُ
وَرَسْمُهُ فِي ضُرُوبِ الْقَوْلِ يُرْتَسَمُ
2. Guiding people as would a towering lighthouse,
Has passed away. His hand moved the pen across the page
٢. رَبُّ الْبَلاغِ الَّذِي كَانَتْ رَوَائِعُهُ
هِيَ النُّجُومُ الَّتِي تَهْدِي أَوِ الرَّجُلُ
3. As inspiration poured from his inkpot like burning embers.
Whether expounding knowledge or literary grace,
٣. يَخُطُّهَا وَكَأَنَّ اللَّوْحَ فِي يَدِهِ
يُصَرِّفُ فِيمَا يَرْسُمُ الْقَلَمُ
4. His ideas were original and his words harmonious.
He was an ocean of knowledge, unfathomed,
٤. يَفْتَرُّ عَنْ وَحْيِهِ فِيهَا المِدَادُ كَمَا
يُذْكَى فَيَفْتَرُّ عَنْ نُورٍ بِهِ الْفَحْمُ
5. With pearls beyond count in its depth.
Minds thrive on his overflowing springs,
٥. فَإِنْ تَرَسَّلَ فِي عِلْمٍ وَفي أَدَبٍ
فَالْفِكْرُ مُبْتَكَرٌ وَاللَّفْظُ مُنْسَجِمُ
6. As fields thrive, watered by ample rain.
His works are richly decorated anthologies,
٦. بَحْرٌ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ لَمْ تُذْخَرْ جَوَاهِرُهُ
وَلَمْ تَحُلْ دُونَها الشُّطْآنُ وَالأَكَمُ
7. Stamping mastery in every art.
His prose delights by its subtlety, dispelling cares and sorrow.
٧. تَزْهُو الْعُقُولُ بِرَشْحٍ مِنْ نَدَاهُ كَمَا
تَزْهُو الحُقُولُ سَقَاهَا الْعَارِضُ الرَّذِمُ
٨. يُهْدِي الْفُصُولَ مُوَشَّاةً مُدَبِّجَةً
بِكُلِّ فَنٍّ مِنَ الإِبْدَاعِ تَتَّسِمُ
٩. وَلِلَّطَّائِفِ فِي أَثْنَائِهَا خِلَسٌ
يُجْلَى بِإِيمَاضِهَا التَّقْطِيبُ وَالْقَتَمُ
