1. When God called him after his jihad
To the great rest, exhausted from effort
١. فَلَمَّا دَعَاهُ اللهُ بَعْدَ جهَادهِ
إِلَى الرَّاحَةِ الكًبْرَى وَقَدْ بَاتَ مُجْهَدَا
2. His brilliance disappeared from all eyes
His absence caused grief, as did his presence
٢. تَوَارَى وَملْءُ النَّاظرَيْنَ شُعَاعُهُ
فَرَاعَ مَغيباً مثْلَ مَا رَاعَ مَشْهدَا
3. A people's treasure suddenly lost
Neither greed could prevent fate, nor ransom
٣. ذَخْيرَةُ قَوْمٍ فُوجئُوا بضِيَاعهَا
فَمَا دَفَعَ الحرْصُ القَضَاءَ وَمَا فَدَى
4. What cultured poet lies in the grave?
What wise community leader is shrouded?
٤. فَأَيُّ أَديبٍ اَلْمَعيٍّ طَوَى الثَّرَى
وَأَيُّ اجْتمَاعيٍّ حَكيمٍ تَغَمَّدَ
5. What economic planner aimed true though obscured
Limits matched his great virtues, multiplying
٥. وَأَيُّ اقْتصَاديٍّ رَمَاهُ وَلَمْ يَبِنْ
لَهُ مَقْتَلٌ رَامٍ خَفيٌّ فَأَقْصَدَا
6. His bereavements, and sorrows multiplied
In Egypt, nay the East, a family mourns
٦. فَقيدٌ عَلَى قَدْرِ المَعَالي تَعَدَّدَتْ
مَآتمُهُوَالرزْءُ فيهِ تَعَدَّدَا
7. For one who united diversity's shards
He left us, his days beyond counting
٧. فَفي مِصْرَ بَلْ فِي الشَّرْقِ أَحْزَانُ أُسْرَةٍ
عَلَى خَيْرِ أنْ لَمَّ الشَّتاتَ وَوَحَّدَا
8. Nor did we leave one happier in his departure
His remembrance grants him life everlasting
٨. تَوَلَّى وَمَا خلْنَاهُ يُحْصَى زَمَانُهُ
عَلَيْه وَمَا خلْنَا امْرَءاً منْهُ أَسْعَدَا
9. Would that one so remembered lived on forever
O kinsmen, does his company no longer cheer the home?
٩. لَهُ منْ خُلُودِ الذِّكْرِ عُمْرٌ وَلَيْتَ مَنْ
يُرَجَّى جَنَاهُ كَانَ بالعُمْرِ أُخْلدَ
10. Though he left fair, lasting memory
May God grant you solace and his goodness
١٠. فَيَا آلَهُ هَلْ يُوحَشُ الدَّارِ أُنْسُهُ
وَقَدْ تَرَكَ الذِّكْرَ الجَميلَ المُؤَبَّدَا
11. As you perpetuate his glory, as he perpetuated
O inheritor, guardian of his legacy
١١. ليَمْنَحْكُمُ اللهُ العَزَاءَ وَخَيْرُهُ
تَعَهُّدكُمْ منْ مَجْدِهِ مَا تَعَهَّدَا
12. You were the best protector, solidifier
Among the age's lofty figures, your place is secure
١٢. وَيَا مَنْ تَوَلَّى بَعْدَهُ رَعْيَ مَا بَنَى
لَقَدْ كُنْتَ خَيْراً حَافِظاً وَموَطِّدَا
13. Never ceasing to be unique among its highest
When Egypt's best are gone, eclipsed
١٣. مَكَانُكَ فيمَنْ أَنْجَبَ العَصرُ بَاذخ
وَمَا زلْتَ في أَعْلاَمه الشُّم مفْرَدَا
14. The dawn God revealed will be eclipsed
١٤. إِذَا مُنَيتْ عَلياءُ مصْرَ بفَرْقَد
تَغَيَّب عَنْهَا أَطْلَعَ اللهُ فَرْقَدَا
