Marvel at the radiance those trifles brought forth,

١٣. فَإِذَا مَا تَنَادَروا وَتَنَادَرْ
تَ فَأَعْجِبْ بِوَرْيِ تِلْكَ الزِّنَاد

١٤. فطَنٌ تَشْرَحُ الصُّدورَ وَمَا تُؤْ

Of joy, and the flood of sorrow since your earthly berth?

١٦. كَيْفَ حَالِي وَأَنْتَ أَدْرَى بِمَا خَلَّ
فْتَ لِي مِنْ فَجِيعَةٍ وَسهَاد

17. Gladden me, oh sweet telephone with happiness I implore!
I am in need of some cheer and glee in my core,

١٧. أَسْعِدي يَا هَوَاتِفَ الأَيْكِ شَجوي
أَنا فِي حَاجَةٍ إِلَى الإِسْعَاد

18. I seek to unburden my voice and heartache in this ode,
Though the pain of loss has dried my pen loaded.

١٨. أَبْتغِي البَثَّ وَالشَّجا غضَّ مِنْ صَوْ

١٩. وَيْحَ أُمِّ اللُّغاتِ مِمَّا دَهَاهَا

٢٠. ذاقتِ الثُّكلَ فِي بنُوَّتِهَا الأمْ

٢١. فِي رِفاقٍ رَدُّوا عَلَى كل أَصْلٍ
مِن عُلاهَا نضارَة الأعْوَادِ

٢٢. نضرَ الله عَهْدَهمْ وَسَقاهمْ
مَا سَقى الأوّلِينَ صَوْبُ العِهَادِ

٢٣. نخبَةٌ قلَّمَا أَتِيحَ لِعَصْرٍ
مِثل مَجْمُوعِهِمْ مِنَ الأفْرَادِ

٢٤. أَيْقَظُوهَا مِنَ الرُّقَاد وَقَدْ جَا

٣٠. نَاثِرٌ تَنْفُثُ البَرَاعَةُ مِنْهُ

31. In his phrases and individual words, eloquence was defeated,
By the splendor in them, critics were refuted,

٣١. لَمْ يَكُنْ فِي مَصَايِدِ اللُّؤلُؤ الفَا

٣٥. فَالمَعَانِي تَتِيهُ بَيْنَ المَعَانِي
بِسَنِيِّ الحُلِيِّ وَالابْرَادِ

36. A disposition no fainthearted can shoulder,
But the stalwart of resolute boulder.

٣٦. وَالمَبَانِي تَعِزُّ بَيْنَ المَبَانِي
بِمَتِينِ الأسْبَابِ وَالأوْتَادِ

37. He never compromised it to live at ease,
Nor ever feared to displease.

٣٧. عَدِّ عَنْ وَصْفِكَ الأدِيبَ وَقُلْ مَا

44. Whose early art contained exemplary features,
Innovations beyond customary creatures.

٤٤. لَمْ يَسَعْهُ وَفِي الضَّميرِ خِلاَف
أَنْ يَرَى الاِعْتِدَالَ فِي المُنَآدِ

45. Whatever his nature effortlessly achieved,
He willingly refined with diligence believed,

٤٥. مَا فُتُوحُ الآرَاءِ وَالجُبْنُ يَطْوِ
يهَا كَطَيِّ النِّصالِ فِي الأغْمَادِ

46. Except verse did not provide sufficient fare,
In the turmoil of living by its thin air.

٤٦. مَنْ يُعَزِّي القُصَّادَ عِلْماً تَوَخَّوْا
أَوْ نَوَالاً عَنْ مُسْعِف القُصَّادِ

47. Providing became imperative, so Hafiz trekked,

Like waves, listless and wide sweeping.

٥٠. إِنَّما حَافِظٌ فَتَاهَا وَمِنْهَا
وَبِهَا فَخْرُهُ عَلَى الأنْدَادِ

Her leader remotely resides in remiss,

٥١. نَشَّأتْهُ وَأَيَّدَتْهُ بِرُوحٍ
عَبْقَرِيٍّ مِنْ رُوْحِهَا مُسْتَفَادِ

52. And why does the sky heap threats looming?
A number made of steel, booming.

٥٢. بَعْدَ أَنْ كَانَ حَاكِياً وَهْوَ يَشْدُو
جَعَلَتْهُ المَحْكِي بَيْنَ الشَّوَادي

53. That preoccupied him for a time, diverting his care,
From brooding beyond, into worldly affair,

٥٣. نَظمَ الشِّعرَ فِي الصِّبا نَظْمَ وَاعٍ
لَقِنٍ نَاشِيءٍ عَلَى اسْتِعْدَادِ

54. Except sprinkling visions that came to thought,
Of his accustomed imagination, fraught.

٥٤. بَادِيءٍ صَوْغَهُ وَفِيهِ فنونٌ
بَارِعَاتٌ لاَ يَتَّسقْنَ لِبَادِي

In surges, breaking ridges of calm and strife,

٥٥. مَا تَعَاصَى عَلَيْه عَنْ عَفْوِ طَبْعٍ

56. Dissent within the military and causes complex
Are tribulations not given to steadfast.

٥٦. غَيْرَ أَنَّ القَرِيضَ لَمْ يَكُ فِي مُضْ
طَرَبِ العَيْشِ مُغْنِياً مِنْ زَادِ

57. Arrogance emboldened the submitting turncoats,
Against their principled liberators of lofty votes,

٥٧. أَوْجَبَ الرِّزْقُ فَانْتَأْى حَافِظٌ يَكْ
دَحُ فِي بِيْئَةٍ مِنَ الأجْنَادِ

58. So their treason met consequences deserved,
When the wicked reaped the fate they swerved.

٥٨. مُوحَشاً فِي مَجَاهِلِ النُّوبِ وَالسُّو
دَانِ بَيْنَ الأغْوَارِ وَالانْجَادِ

٥٩. تَتَقَضَّى أَيَّامُهُ فِي ارْتِيَاضٍ

The masses often betrayed in struggle past,

لَة مَنْ عَاقَبُوهُ بالإِبْعَاد

70. Ceding to tyranny its reign to last,
But faith was the ally of vanguards’ hearts,

75. Redemption, if you were the first martyr and broke

76. A people with that self-sacrifice contrived,

٧٦. لَقِيَ البُؤْسَ وَالأدِيبُ مِنَ البُؤْ
سِ قَديماً فِيهَا عَلَى مِيعَادِ

77. Outlasting events, steadfast and strong.
The day you were mourned nearly revealed a trace,

٧٧. حَائِراً فِي مَذَاهِبِ الكَسْبِ لاَ يَفْ
رُقُ بَيْنَ الإِصْدَارِ وَالإِيرادِ

78. Of the reverence, on that predestined place,
They gained from unity, strength their foes to defy,

٧٨. عَائِفاً خُطَّة الجُدَاةِ وَفِيهِ
طَبْعُ حُرٍّ يَجُودُ لا طَبْعُ جَادي

79. Seeing their valor as shields that fortify.
This is Egypt of the youth, arising in throngs,

٧٩. وَلَقَدْ زَادَهُ شَجىً أَنَّ سُوقَ ال
عِلمِ كَانَتْ فِيْ مِصْرَ سُوقَ كَسَادِ

80. Young at heart, unbowed in lifelong.
A man died leaving a generation bound,

٨٠. وَسَجَايَا الرِّجَالِ رَانَتْ عَلَيْهَا
لُوثَةٌ مِنْ قَديمِ الاِسْتِعْبَادِ

81. To valiance, unspoiled by qualms around.
If duty called them, they came like lions denned,

٨١. فَهُمُ وَادِعُونَ لاَهُونَ بِالزِّي
نَاتِ وَالتُّرَهَاتِ وَالأعْيَادِ

82. Hastening from villages and every fenced ground,
They established an era, quietly brave,

٨٢. عِبَرٌ مَرَّ فِي جَوَانِحِه مَا
لاَحَ مِنْهَا مَرَّ النِّصالِ الحِدَادِ

Who saw the celebrated poet one day,

٨٥. ذَاكَ وَالقَوْلُ لَيْسَ يَعْدُو شَكاةً
لَوْ جَرَتْ أَدْمُعاً جَرَتْ بِجِسَادِ

88. Smiling or frowning, features veiling past,
Chanting the throng, his visage above, guiding,

٨٨. طَرَأَتْ حَالَةٌ تَيَقَّظ فِيهَا
لِدُعَاةِ الهُدَى ضَمِيرُ السَّوَادِ

89. As melodious songster or dove a-gliding.
No coyness to him but fleeting dimple dents,

٨٩. فَإِذَا حَافِظٌ وَقَدْ بَشَّ مَا فِي
نَفْسِهِ مِنْ تَجَهمٍ وَارْبِدَادِ

نَ كَمِيناً كَالنَّارِ تَحْتَ الرَّمَادِ

94. Then screeching with harsh cacophony, undone,
He shouts the aloof cry, only echoes return,

٩٤. فَتَأَتَّى بَعْدَ القُنُوطِ الدَّجُوجِ
يِّ رَجَاءٌ لِلشَّاعِرِ المِجْوَادِ

95. As if the ether carries lightning to shake and burn,
A pride for the worthy that nothing deters,

٩٥. مَسَّ مِنْهُ السَّوَادَ فَانْبَجَسَتْ نَا
رٌ وَنُورٌ مِنْ طَيِّ ذَاكَ السَّوَادِ

96. And humiliation for the craven that nothing spurs,
A banner's flap, marching to glory ahead,

٩٦. أَكْبَرَ الدَّهْرُ وَثْبَةً وَثَبَتْهَا
مِصْرُ مُفْتَكَّة مِنَ الأصْفَادِ

97. To the heroes' rhythm, onwards lead.
For the spirit reverberating in these odes,

٩٧. وَثُغَاءً غَدَا هَزِيماً فَأْلْقَى
رُعْبَهُ فِي مَرابِضِ الاسَادِ

98. Is the spirit of a people, and the voice their abodes,
O one who enriched the age with relics plenteous!

٩٨. مَا الَّذي أَخْرَجَ الشَّجاعَةَ مِنْ حَيْ
ثُ طَوَتْهَا قُرُونُ الاِسْتِبْدَادِ

99. My verses failed before the task so grievous,
Though eloquent, they fall short in accolades listed,

٩٩. وَجَلاَ غُرَّةَ الصَّلاَحِ فَلاَحَتْ
تَزْدَهِي مِنْ غَيَاهِبِ الإِفسَادِ

100. For one whose remembrance immortality twisted,
It suffices you are mentioned, your memory indeed,

١٠٠. فَإِذَا أُمَّة أَبِيَّة ضَيْمٍ
مَا لَهَا غَيْرُ حَقِّها مِنْ عَتَادِ

101. Is worthiest of all to eternity cede.

١٠١. نَهَضَتْ فَجأْةً تُنَافِحُ فِي آ
نٍ عَدُوَّيْنِ أَسْرَفَا فِي اللِّدَادِ

١٠٢. أَجْنَبِياً أَلْقَى المَرَاسِيَ حَتَّى
تُقْلِعَ الرَّاسِيَاتُ فِي الاطْوَادِ

١٠٣. وَهَوَاناً كَأنَّما طَبَعَ الشَّعْ
بَ عَلَيْه تَقَادُمُ الإِخْلاَدِ

١٠٤. حَلْبَةٌ يُعذَرُ المُقَصِّرُ فِيهَا
وَالخَوَاتِيمُ رَهْنُ تِلْكَ المَبَادِي

١٠٥. لَيْسَ تَغْيِيرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ يَسِيراً
كَيْفَ مَا عُوِّدُوهُ مِنْ آمَاد

١٠٦. غَيْرَ أَنَّ الإِيمَانَ كَانَ حَلِيفاً
لِقُلُوبِ الطَّليعَة الانْجَاد

١٠٧. فَاسْتَعَانُوا بِه عَلَى مَا ابْتَغُوْهُ
غَيْرَ بَاغِينَ مِنْ بَعِيدِ المُرَاد

١٠٨. لَمْ يَطُلْ عَهْدُ مِصْرَ بِالوَثْبَة الأُو
لَى وَدُونَ الوُصُولِ خَرْطُ القَتَاد

١٠٩. فَتَرَاخَى فِيهَا وَثِيقُ الاوَاخِي
وَوَهَى الْجَزْلُ مِنْ عُرَى الاِتِّحاد

١١٠. آيَةٌ أَخْفَقَتْ فَقَيَّض أُخْرَى
أَثَرٌ مِنْ عِنَايَة الله بَاد

١١١. فَزِعَتْ دِنْشِوَايُ تَحْمِي حَمَاماً
مِنْ مُلِمِّينَ كَالذِّئَابِ الأَوَادِي

١١٢. فَتَصَدَّى لِلذَّوْدِ عَنْهُ جُفَاةٌ
مِنْ شُيُوخٍ بِهَا وَمِنْ أَوْلاَدِ

١١٣. حَادِثٌ رَوَّعَ العَمِيدَ أَيَخْشَا
هُ وَسُلْطَانُهُ وَطِيدُ العِمَادِ

١١٤. لاَ وَلَكِنَّ عِزَّةً أَخَذَتْهُ
عَنْ غُرُورٍ بِبَأْسِهِ وَاعْتِدَادِ

١١٥. سَفَهٌ جَرَّأَ العَبِيدَ المَنَاكِي
دَ عَلَى مُعْتَقِيهِمِ الأَجْوَادِ

١١٦. فَخَلِيقٌ بِهِمْ أَشَد قِصَاصٍ
حَلَّ بِالآبِقِينَ وَالمُرَّادِ

١١٧. سَاقَهَا مُثْلَةً تَوَهَّمهَا خَيْر
اً وَكَانَتْ عَلَيْهِ شَرَّ نَآدِ

١١٨. ذَاعَ فِي الشَّعبِ وَصْفُهَا فَفَشَتْ آ
لاَمُهَا فِي القُلوبِ وَالأَجْسَادِ

١١٩. وَكَأَنَّ السِّياطَ يَحْزُزْنَ فِي أَجْ
لاَدِهِ وَالحِبَالَ فِي الأَجْيَادِ

١٢٠. كَانَ تَرْجِيعُ حَافِظٍ نَوْحَ مَوْتو
رٍ فَدَوى كَاللَّيْثِ بالإِيعَادِ

١٢١. فِي قَوَافٍ بِهِنَّ تَنْطِقُ لَوْ أُوْ
تِيَتِ النطْقَ أَلسُنُ الأَحْقَادِ

١٢٢. عَلَّمَتْ خَافِضِي الجَنَاحِ لِبَاغٍ
كيْفَ شَأْنُ الحَمَامِ وَالصَّيادِ

١٢٣. وُعِدَ الصَّابِرُونَ بِالفَوْزِ وَعْداً
حَقَّقتْهُ أَنْبَاؤُهُمْ بِاطرَادِ

١٢٤. إِنَّما الصَّبرُ فِي النفُوسِ جَنِين
يُرْهِقُ الحَامِلاَتِ قَبْلَ الوِلاَدِ

١٢٥. كَيْفَ يَأْتِي بِهِ ارْتِجَالٌ وَلَمْ يَأْ
تِ ارْتِجَالٌ يَوْماً بِقَوْلٍ مُجَادِ

١٢٦. خلق عَزَّ فِي الجَمَاعَاتِ مِنْ فَرْ
طِ تَكَالِيفِهِ وَفِي الآحَادِ

١٢٧. طَالَمَا خَانَ فِي النِّضالِ الجَمَاهِ
ييرَ فَأَلقَتْ لِغَاصِبٍ بِالقِيَادِ

١٢٨. بَعْدَ وَثْبٍ فِي إِثْرِ وَثْبٍ عَنِيفٍ
وَارْتِدَادٍ فِي الشَّوْطِ غِب ارْتِدَادِ

١٢٩. سَاوَرَ الأُمَّة التَّرَددَ وَالْتَا
ثَ عَلَيْهَا فِي السَّيرِ وَجْهُ الرَّشَادِ

١٣٠. وَتَبَدَّى الإِحْجَامُ فِي صُورَةٍ زَلاَّ
ءَ جَرَّتْ إِقْدَامَ أَهْلِ الفَسَادِ

١٣١. بالدِّعَايَاتِ وَالسِّعايَاتِ حَاموا
حَوْلَهَا لِلسِّوَامِ أَوْ لِلرِّوَادِ

١٣٢. لاَ تَسَلْ يَوْمَذَاك عَنْ جَلدِ القا
دَةِ فِي مُلْتقى الخطوبِ الشِّدَادِ

١٣٣. كلَّمَا ازْدَادَتِ الصِّعابُ أَبَوْا إِلاَّ
كِفاحاً وَعَزْمُهُمْ فِي ازْدِيَادِ

١٣٤. يَبْذلونَ القُوى وَفَوْقَ القوَى غَيْ
رَ مُبَالينَ أَنَّها لِنَفَادِ

١٣٥. وَالزعِيمُ الأَبَر أَطْيَبُهُمْ نَفْس
اً عَنِ النَّفسِ فِي صِرَاعِ العَوَادِي

١٣٦. هَلْ يُنَجِّي شعْباً مِنَ اليَاس إِلاَّ
حَدَث مِنْ خَوَارِقِ المُعْتادِ

١٣٧. مُصْطَفَى مُصْطفَى بِحَسْبِكَ إِنْ يُذْ
كَرْ فِدَاءٌ أَنْ كنْتَ أَول فَادِ

١٣٨. مُصْطَفَى مُصْطَفَى لِيَهْنِئْكَ أَنْ أَح
يَيْتَ قَوْماً بِذَاكَ الاِسْتِشْهَادِ

١٣٩. دَب فِيْهِمْ رُوح جَدِيدٌ لَهُ مَا
بَعْدَهُ فِي القلوبِ وَالإِخلادِ

١٤٠. تنقضِي الحَادِثَات بعْدَك وَالرو
حُ مُقِيم فِيهِمْ عَلَى الابَادِ

١٤١. كَادَ يَوْم شيعْتَ فِيهِ يُرِيهِمْ
لَمحَةً مِنْ جَلاَلِ يَوْمِ المَعَادِ

١٤٢. صَدَرُوا عَنْهُ بِالتَّعارُفِ فِيمَا
بَيْنَهُمْ وَهْوَ قوَّةُ الأَعْدَادِ

١٤٣. وَاسْتَشَفوا لِبَأْسِهِمْ فِيهِ سِرا
كَمْ تَحَامَى أَنْ يُدْرِكوهُ الأعَادِي

١٤٤. هَذِهِ مِصْرُ الفَتِيَّة هَبتْ
فِي صُفوفٍ فَتِيَّة لِلذيَادِ

١٤٥. رَجَلٌ مَاتَ مُخْلِفاً مِنْهُ جِيلا
رَابَطَ الجَأْشِ غَيْرَ سَهْلِ المَقَادِ

١٤٦. إِنْ دَعَاهُ الحِفَاظُ أَقْبَلَ غِلْما
ن سِرَاعٌ مِنَ القُرَى وَالبَوَادِي

١٤٧. أَحْدَثُوا فِي البِلاَدِ عَهْدَ لَجَاجٍ
فِي تَقَاضِي حُقُوقِهَا وَعِنَادِ

١٤٨. عَهْدُ نُورٍ مِنَ الحِفَاظِ وَنَارٍ
بَعْدَ طُولِ الخُمُودِ وَالإِخْمَادِ

١٤٩. اتَخِذَتْ عَبْقَرِيَّة الشِّعرِ فِيهِ
سُلَّماً لِلعُرُوجِ وَالإِصْعَادِ

١٥٠. أَبْلَغَتْ حَافِظاً مِنَ الحَظِّ أَوْجاً
زَادَ مِنْهُ العَلْيَاءَ كًلَّ مَزَادِ

١٥١. مَنْ رَأَى الشَّاعِرَ المُفَوَّةَ يَوْماً
وَحَوَالَيْهِ أُمَّة فِي احْتِشَادِ

١٥٢. مُوفِياً مِنْ مِنَصَّة القَوْلِ يَرْنُو
بِاتَّئادٍ وَلَحْظُهُ فِي اتِّقادِ

١٥٣. وَاسِعَ المَنْكِبَيْنِ مُنْفَرِجَ الحُ
قْوَيْنِ يَخْطُو خُطَاهُ كَالمُتَهَادِي

١٥٤. بَاسِماً أَوْ مُقَطِّباً عَنْ مُحَيَّا
بَارِزِ العَارِضَيْنِ فَوْقَ الهَادِي

١٥٥. عَزَّ مِنْهُ العِذَارُ إِلاَّ تَفَارِ
يقَ خِفافاً فِي الوَجْنَتَيْنِ بَدَادِ

١٥٦. يُنْشِدُ الحَفْلَ فَاتِناً كُلَّ لُبٍ
بِبَدِيعِ الإِيمَاءِ والإِنْشَادِ

١٥٧. وَبِشِعْرٍ لاَ يُطْرَفُ الجَفْنُ فِيهِ
صَادِرٍ عَنْ حَمِيَّة وَاعْتقَادِ

١٥٨. مَنْ رَأَى حَافِظاً نَذِيراً بَشِيراً
جَائِلاً صَائِلاً بِغَيْرِ اتِّئادِ

١٥٩. غَرِداً كَالهَزَارِ آنَاً وَآناً
حَرِداً كَالخِضِمِّ ذِي الإِزْبَادِ

١٦٠. يَنْبِرُ النَّبرَةَ العَزُوفَ فَمَا تُ
سْمَعُ إِلاَّ أَصْدَاؤُهَا فِي الوَادِي

١٦١. وَكَأَنَّ الأَثِيرَ يَحْمِلُ مِنْهَا
كَهْرَبَاءً تَهُزُّ كُلَّ فُؤَادِ

١٦٢. فَهْيَ عِزٌّ لِلأَرْيَحِيِّ المُفَادِي
وَهْيَ ذُلٌّ لِلخَائِسِ المُتَفَادِي

١٦٣. وَهْيَ خَفْقُ اللِّوَاءِ يَحْدُوهُ مِنْ إِي
قَاعِ أَبْطَالِهِ إِلى المَجْدِ حَادِي

١٦٤. ذَاكَ أَنَّ الرُّوحَ المُرَدَّدَ فِيهَا
رُوحُ شَعْبٍ وَالصَّوْتَ صَوْتُ بِلاَدِ

١٦٥. أَيُّها الرَّاحِلُ الَّذِي مَلأَ العَصْ
رَ بِآثَارِهِ الرَّغَابِ الجِيَادِ

١٦٦. أَعْجَزَتْنِي قَبْلَ التَّمامِ القَوَافِي
وَالقَوَافِي تَضَنُّ بِالإِمْدَادِ

١٦٧. قَدْكَ مِنْهَا بَيَانُ مَفْخَرَةٍ وَاعْ
ذِرْ قُصُوراً بِهَا عَنِ التَّعدَادِ

١٦٨. بِتْ قَرِيراً فإِنَّ ذِكْرَاكَ فِينَا
أَجْدَرُ الذِّكْرَيَاتِ بِالإِخْلاَدِ
