1. I see naught but memories of morals
From eyes of etiquette and ethics

١. مَا تُرَى غَيْرَ ذِكْرَيَاتٍ بَوَاقِ
مِنْ عُيُونِ الآدَابِ وَالأَخْلاَقِ

2. Did the radiant moon that lit them up
Fade to proclaim its setting?

٢. أَفَلَ الفَرْقَدُ الَّذِي كَانَ يَجْلُوهَا
سَنَاءً فَآذَنَتْ بِلِحَاقِ

3. And when the star's glow appeared
The joys of dawn followed in sequence

٣. وَإِذَا مَا طَفَاوَةُ النَّجمِ بَانَتْ
تَبِعَتْهَا مَبَاهِجُ الإِشْرَاقِ

4. Oh Hussein, noble in every meaning
And in lineage, origin and branch

٤. يَا حُسَيْنَ النَّبيلِ فِي كُلِّ مَعْنَى
وَالكَرَمِ الأُصُولِ وَالأَعْرَاقِ

5. Illness kept me from you the day you turned away
Though I was not done with you

٥. عَاقَنِي الدَّاءُ عَنْكَ يَوْمَ تَوَلَّيْتَ
وَمَا كُنْتَ عَنْكَ بِالمُعْتَاقِ

6. So my youth is my seat and your procession
A throbbing heart walking in my breast

٦. فَالصِّبا مُقْعِدِي وَمَوْكِبُك ال
ذخَّارُ يَمْشِي فِي قَلْبِي الخَفَّاقِ

7. Evil's haste did not suffice me
Nor evil's respite console me

٧. مَا كَفَتْنِي مُعْجِلَ السُّوءِ أَيَّا
مِي وَمَا مِنْ مُؤَجَّل السُّوءِ وَاقِ

8. How could you miss what virtues you bore
As you suffered harm and met

٨. كَيْفَ لَمْ تَدْرَإِ الفَضَائِلَ مَا رُحْتَ
تُعَانِي مِنَ الأَذَى وَتُلاَقِي

9. The wicked drank pure, cool water
While you drank grit in a cup of bile

٩. شَرِبَ الطَّالِحُونَ عَذْباً زِلاَلاً
وَشَرِبْتَ القِذَى بِكَأْسٍ دِهَاقِ

10. Death and life remaining balanced
Though death's taste bitter for the living

١٠. إِنَّ مَوْتاً وَالعَيْشُ مَا زَالَ مَنْصُو
راً شَهِيَّ الحَيِّي لِمُرِّ المَذَاقِ

11. What loss that the blooming branch would wither
Its flowers and leaves once exquisite

١١. أَيُّ غُبْنٍ أَنْ يَقْصِبَ الغِصْنُ
مِخْصَلاً طَرِيفَ الأَزْهَارِ وَالأَوْرَاقِ

12. What pain that over the shining star
A shadow would pass to eclipse it

١٢. وَشَجِيٌّ أَنْ يَمُرَّ بِالْكَوْكَبِ السَّا
طِعِ ظِلٌّ فَيَبْتَلِي بِالْمُحَاقِ

13. No objection to fate, but of rulings
Parting's rule harshest of edicts

١٣. لاَ اعْتِرَاضَ عَلَى القَضَاءِ وَلَكِنْ
أَشَد الأَحْكَامِ حِكْمُ الفِرَاقِ

14. Your smile was light to eyes
Now their tears flow unchecked

١٤. كَانَ لِلأَعْيُنِ ابْتِسَامُكَ نُوراً
فَقَدَتْهُ فَمَاؤُهَا غَيْرُ رَاقِ

15. Ears heard most beloved sounds
After your gentle, subtle words

١٥. وَنَبَا بِالآذَانِ أَشْهَى سَمَاعٍ
بَعْدَ أَلْفَاظِكَ اللِّطَافِ الرِّقَاقِ

16. Few lived as you did
Without doubt or hypocrisy

١٦. قَلَّ مَنْ عَاشَ مِثْلَ مَا عِشْتَ
فِي أَنْزَهِ حَالٍ عَنْ رِيبَةٍ وَنفَاقِ

17. Seeking your Lord in aiding
The infirm and destitute

١٧. وَالْتِمَاسٌ لِوَجْهِ رَبِّك فِي
إِسْعَافِ ذِي عِلَّةٍ وَذِي إِمْلاَقِ

18. And pursuing each great matter
Unmarred by echoes in horizons

١٨. وَابْتِغَاءٌ لِكُلِّ أَمْرٍ عَظِيمٍ
لَمْ يَذَعْهُ الطَّنينُ فِي الآفَاقِ

19. You preceded every summit with another
In the heights, you were redeemed from rivalry

١٩. ظَلْتَ سِبَّاقَ غَايَةٍ بَعْدَ أُخْرَى
فِي المَعَالِي فُدِيْتَ مِنْ سَبَّاقِ

20. In life, to glory refined
And to God in death, sublime

٢٠. فِي الحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا إِلى المَجْدِ رَاقٍ
وَإِلى اللهِ فِي المَنيَّة رَاقِ

21. You were prepared for eternity
Perfect in majesty and detail

٢١. تُهَيءُ الخُلْدَ صُورَةً كَمُلَتْ
زِينَاتُهَا مِنْ جَلاَئِلٍ وَدَقَاقِ

22. But death tore you painfully
From hearts and eyes in darkness

٢٢. نَزَعَهَا المَنُونُ نَزْعاً أَلِيماً
مِنْ سِوَادِ القُلُوبِ وَالأَحْدَاقِ

23. Severing the beloved companions
What solace for the bereft remains?

٢٣. سَلَخَ التَّوْأَمَ الحَبِيبَ فَمَاذَا
حَلَّ مِنْهُ بِصِنْوِهِ المُشْتَاقِ

24. Since destiny bound their love and embrace
His brother consoles him though

٢٤. وَهُمَا مُنْذُ قُدِّرَا فِي ضَمِيرِ الدَّهْ
رِ حِلْفَا هَوَى وَإِلْفَا عِنَاقِ

25. We cannot curb tears' flow
Sorrow shared lessens its clutch

٢٥. إِنْعَزَى أَخَاهُ عَنْهُ وَمَا
نَمْلِكُ حَبْسَ الدُّمُوعِ فِي الآمَاقِ

26. For companions ease the touch
He has only God's grace and care

٢٦. وَيَسِيرُ فِي ذَلِكَ الحُزْنِ مَا يَنْقُصُ
مِنٌ بُرْحِهِ اقْتِسَامُ الرِّفَاقِ

27. Gentle comfort in his despair
The cure lies in the wounded one

٢٧. مَا لَهُ فِي مُصَابِهِ غَيْرَ عَوْنِ اللَّ
هِ وَاللُّطْفِ مِنْهُ وَالإِشْفَاقِ

28. Clinging to the Healer, the only One
So let Sherine rest in his Master's precinct

٢٨. وَالعَلاَجُ الأَكْفَى إِذ الجُرْحُ أَشْفى
فِي اعْتِصَامِ المَخْلُوقِ بِالخَلاَّقِ

29. And take of His bounty with grace
He was a believer, trusted

٢٩. فَلْيَطِبُ فِي جِوَارِ مَوْلاَهُ شِيرينُ
وَيَأْخُذْ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ بِخَلاَقِ

30. Loyal of oath and covenant
What devotion, faith and life

٣٠. إِنَّه كَانَ مُؤْمِناً وَأَمِيناً
وَوَفِيّاً بِالعَهْدِ وَالمِيثَاقِ

31. Bore his bier upon their backs
Farewell him beautifully, for nothing

٣١. أَيُّ تَقْوَى وَأَيُّ دِينٍ وَدُنْيَا
حَمَلَتْ نَعْشَهُ عَلَى الأَعْنَاقِ

32. Hinders every visitation
If you miss the beloved created face

٣٢. أَجْمَلُوا يَا مُوَدِّعِيهِ فَمَا حَالُ
تَنَائِيهِ دُونَ كُلِّ تَلاَقِ

33. The Beloved Ever-Living's face remains

٣٣. إِنْ يَفُتْكُمْ وَجْهُ العَزِيزِ المُوَلَّى
لَمْ يَفُتْكُمْ وَجْهُ العَزِيزِ البَاقِي
