١. أَشْفَتْ غَلِيلَ فُؤَادِكَ الظَّمآنِ
تِلْكَ العُيُونُ تَسِيلُ مِنْ لُبْنَانِ

2. And separation from homelands is the most woeful tragedy
My heart did not cease fluttering passionately over it

٢. أَمْ فُرْقَةُ الأَوْطَانِ قَدْ أَوْدَتْ بِهِ
وَأَشَدُّ رُزْءٍ فُرْقَةُ الأَوْطَانِ

3. Until it settled in it with throbbings
As for me, the events of parting

٣. مَا زَالَ مِنْ وَجْدٍ عَلَيْهَا خَافِقاً
حَتَّى اسْتَقَرَّ بِهَا مِنَ الخَفَقَانِ

4. Almost drain tears from my eyelids
No argument passes me except with me

٤. أَمَّا أَنَا فَتَكَادُ أَحْدَاثُ النَّوَى
تَسْتَنْزِفُ الْعَبَرَاتِ مِنْ أَجْفَانِي

5. Regret over a bosom friend of bosom friends
And renewed grief over a brother

٥. لا تَنْقَضِي بِيَ حِجَّةٌ إِلاَّ وَبِي
أَسَفٌ عَلَى خِدْنٍ مِنَ الأَخْدَانِ

6. My grief over those passed of my brothers
Shall I have consolation after you, my friend, and my deepest sorrows

٦. وَيُجَدِّدُ الحُزْنَ الْعَتِيدَ عَلَى أَخٍ
حُزْنِي عَلَى المَاضِينَ مِنْ إِخْوَانِي

7. Have overcome solace and filled my soul
Your prevention of those who remained was bad, even if

٧. هَلْ لِي تَأَسٍّ بَعْدَ بَيْنِكَ وَأَلأَسَى
غَلَبَ الْعَزَاءَ وَبَاتَ مِلْءَ جَنَانِي

8. The early ones were delighted to precede peers
The steadfast one was shaken that you were resigned to what fate dictated

٨. قَدْ سَاءَ مَنْعَاكَ الَّذِينَ بَقُوا وَإِنْ
سَرَّ الأُولَى سَبَقُوا مِنَ الأَقْرَانِ

9. That determination in the best of youths
And the youth of that body in its prime

٩. جَزِعَ الصَّبُورُ وَقَدْ سَكَنْتِ لِمَا دَهَى
تِلْكَ العَزِيمَةَ فِي فَتَى الْفِتَيَانِ

10. And the youth of that soul in its prime
How did you fall silent when you were warbling zeal

١٠. وَشَبَابِ ذَاكَ الجِسْمِ فِي رَيْعَانِهِ
وَشَبَابَ تِلْكَ النَّفْسِ فِي الرَّيْعَانِ

11. And your echo in it filled every place
The night of those staying up will be long, and their night

١١. أَنَّى سَكَتَّ وَكُنْتَ غِرِّيدَ الحِمَى
وَصَدَاكَ فِيهِ مِلْءُ كُلِّ مَكَانِ

12. Yearning for your melodious singing
I died a thrush, and there is no intercessor

١٢. سَيَطُولُ لَيْلُ السَّاهِرِينَ وَلَيْلُهُ
شَوْقاً إِلَى إِنْشَادِكَ الرَّنَّانِ

13. For the bulbul's singing in the branches
O brother of perfection, after you who is a caster

١٣. أَلمَوْتُ خَتَّالٌ وَلَيْسَ بِشَافِعٍ
لِلبُلْبُلِ التَّغْرِيدُ فِي الأَفْنَانِ

14. Of charming poems with such perfection
All you did with care

١٤. مَنْ يَا أَخَا الإِتْقَانِ بَعْدَكَ صَائِغٌ
غُرَرَ الْقَرِيضِ بِذَلِكَ الإِتْقَانِ

15. You perfected with utmost benevolence
By nature you pour forth a composer or prose writer

١٥. كُلُّ الَّذِي أَجْرَيْتَ فِيهِ يَرَاعَةً
أَحْسَنْتَ فِيهِ نِهَايَةَ الإِحْسَانِ

16. The loftiest meanings in the most elegant constructions
You incline toward integrity, tireless in explaining

١٦. بالطَّبْعِ تُفْرِغُ نَاظِماً أَوْ نَاثِراً
أَسْمَى المَعَانِي فِي أَرَقِّ مَبَانِي

17. The paths of guidance and ways of civilization
So when you criticize, you are the truest bird

١٧. تَهْوَى الرُّقِيَّ فَمَا نَمَلُّ مُبَيِّناً
سُبُلَ الهُدَى وَطَرَائِقَ الْعُمْرَانِ

18. Keenly judicious in matters and eras
How much wisdom you echoed and reiterated

١٨. فَإِذَا نَقَدْتَ فَأَنْتَ أَصْدَقُ طَائِرٍ
بَصَراً بِقَاصٍ فِي الأُمُورِ وَدَانِ

19. With the resonance of triads and octaves
And a literary essay you detailed and connected

١٩. كَمْ حِكْمَةٍ رَدَّدْتَهَا فَأَعَدْتَهَا
وَلَهَا رَنِينُ مَثَالِثٍ وَمَثَانِي

20. Connection of a unique, articulated with beauty
With eloquence, leaving no need

٢٠. وَمَقَامَةٍ فَصَّلْتَهَا وَوَصَلْتَهَا
وَصْلَ الْفَرِيدِ مُفَصَّلاً بِجُمَانِ

21. In the soul of a reader seeking explanation
And fluency that quenches the thirsty as if it were

٢١. بِفَصَاحَةٍ لَيْسَتْ لِتُبْقِيَ حَاجَةً
فِي نَفْسِ مُطَّلِعٍ إِلَى تِبْيَانِ

22. The dripping of dew in the throat of the hot
And charming drollery for the people of temperance

٢٢. وَسَلاسَةٍ تُرْوِي الْغَلِيلَ كَأَنَّهَا
قَطْرُ النَّدَى فِي مُهْجَةِ الْحَرَّانِ

23. Like the drollery of lights and colors
The narratives you embroidered suffice

٢٣. وَدُعَابَةٍ فَتَّانَةٍ لأُولِي النُّهَى
كَدُعَابَةِ الأَنْوَارِ وَالأَلْوَانِ

24. For peoples to peruse until eras
Scrolls without number, their effects

٢٤. تَكْفِي الرِّوَايَاتُ الَّتِي دَبَّجْتَهَا
أُمَماً تُطَالِعُهَا إِلَى أَزْمَانِ

25. As the ages passed in times
Do not distance yourself, for in our hearts

٢٥. صُحُفٌ بِلا عَدٍّ لَهَا آثَارُهَا
مَا كَرَّتِ الأَحْقَابُ فِي الأَزْمَانِ

26. You have an aspect flowering with joy
Your memory in the garden of loyalty is a friend

٢٦. لا تَبْعَدَنَّ فَإِنَّ فِي أَكْبَادِنَا
لَكَ جَانِباً يَنْبُو عَنِ السُّلْوَانِ

27. And your tomb lavishly adorned with tenderness
