1. The boasting and pride are transient
While my poetry will live on in the immortal
١. بَقِيَ الِّذكْرِ وَالرَّغَامُ فَنِي
وَسَيَحْيَى فِي الخَالِدِينَ فِني
2. It's sorrowful for the weak when a hand
That supported them is shackled in a coffin
٢. حَسْرَةٌ للِضِّعَافِ أنَّ يَداً
نَصَرَتْهُمُ تُغَلُّ فِي كفَنِ
3. He met his fate and sorrow prevail
A monument among the glories of time
٣. لَقِيَ الْحَتْفَ وَالأَسَى عَمَمٌ
عَلَمٌ مِنُ مَفَاخِرٍ الزَّمَنِ
4. His determination took him to great heights
Beyond the words of the most eloquent speaker
٤. بَلَّغَتْهُ عَلْيَاءهُ هِمَمٌ
فَوْقَ وَصْفِ المُفَوَّهِ اللَّقِنِ
5. A person's fate in life heads to an end
Whether it reaches glory or is disgraced in shame
٥. إنَّ لِلمَرْءِ فِي الحَيَاةِ مُنًى
إنْ سَمَتْ عَزَّ أَوْتَهُنْ بَهُنِ
6. What is built will wear away and decay
While what is made to last will remain
٦. سِوْفَ يَبْلَى مَا يُبْتَنَى لِبِلُى
وَسَيَبْقَى مَا لِلبَقَاءِ بُنِي
7. He led his deeds so the best prevailed
Through the effort of one who masters the difficult
٧. سَاسَ أَعْمَالَهُ فَأَنْجَحَهَا
جَهْدُ رَوَّاضِ صَعْبَةٍ مَرِنِ
8. With the ways of a prudent and wise one
And methods of a judicious mind
٨. بتَصَاريفِ عَازمٍ ثَقِفٍ
وَأَسَالِيبِ حَازِمٍ ذَهِنِ
9. He did not compromise truth to desire
Or avoid what traditions deemed right
٩. لَمْ يُمَالِيءْ عَلَى الصَّوَابِ هَوى
أوْ يُجَنِبْ مَا اسْتَدَّ مِنْ سَنَنِ
10. He took risks and was undaunted
By their severity and was not disgraced
١٠. وَلَقَدْ غَامَرَ الخُطُوبَ فَلَمْ
بيهِ مِنْ بَأُسِهَا وَلَمْ يَهِنِ
11. God's generosity in prosperity to him
Multiplied his gratitude and bounty
١١. بَسْطَةُ اللهِ فِي الثَّرَاءِ لَهُ
أَجْمَلَتْ شُكْرَهَا يَدَا فَمِنِ
12. Unlike one whose pasture is favor
As if favor has never existed
١٢. لاَ كَمَنْ فِي الجَمِيلِ مَرْتَعُهُ
وَكَأَنَّ الجَمِيلَ لَمْ يَكُنِ
13. His kindness in his covenants was vast
Gifts that were not stained with favors
١٣. أَوْسَعَ البِرَّ فِي مَعَاهِدِهِ
مِنَحاً لَمْ يُشَبْن بِالمِنَنِ
14. Deeds that were great and multiplied
For they were of the finest consciousness
١٤. مَأْثُرَاتٌ جَلَّتْ وَضَاعَفَهَا
أَنَّهَا مِنْ دَقَائِقِ الفِطَنِ
15. His reputation from Egypt spread
To distant villages and cities
١٥. لَبْسَ مِنْ مِصْرَ وَاسْمُهُ عَلَمٌ
فِي القُرى النَّائْيَاتِ وَالمُدُنِ
16. Between those whose loyalty he treasured
And those who kept their word like the deceased
١٦. بَيْنَ مَنْ أَكْرَمَتْ وِفَادَتَهُمْ
مَنْ رَعَى العَهْدَ كَالفَقِيدِ مَنِ
17. If only they followed his example
Their return would be pure from sorrow
١٧. ألوْ حَذَوْا حَذْوَهُ لَطَابَ لَهُمْ
وِرْدُهُمْ صَفياً مِنَ الإحَنِ
18. Whoever loves kindness will not see
His days as anything but beautiful
١٨. مَنْ أحَبَّ الإحْسَانَ لَمْ يُرِهِ
دَهْرُهُ غَيْرَ وَجْهِهِ الحَسَنِ
19. Where is the open-handed and guided one
Whose view overcame the stingy and vain
١٩. أَيْن مِنْ جًودِ بَاذِلٍ وَهُدَى
رَأيِهِ شُحُّ بَاخِلٍ أفِنِ
20. A blessing for the wealthy to loan God
While He is without need from him
٢٠. حُظْوَةٌ لِلغَنِيِّ أُوتِيَ أنْ
يُقْرِضَ اللهَ وَهْوَ عَنْهُ غَنِي
21. Dew falling on a flower is not
Like dew falling on a pile of hay
٢١. لَيْسَ وَقْعُ النَّدَى عَلَى زَعَرٍ
مِثْلَ وَقْعِ النَّدَى عَلَى دِمَنِ
22. O prince, we have solace in you
For the most noble of the living, if he passes
٢٢. يَا أمِيراً لَنَا العَزَاءُ بِهِ
عَنْ أَعَزَ الأَحْياءِ إنْ يَحِنِ
23. And you have in every situation
A tradition of diverse traditions
٢٣. ولَكَ فِي كُلِّ حَالَةٍ عَرَضَتْ
سُنَّةٌ مِنْ طَرَائِفِ السُّنَنِ
24. Favors that do not cease, continuing
To fill the days with favors
٢٤. مِنَنٌ لاَ تَنِي تتَابِعُهَا
قَدْ مَلأَتَ الأَيَّامَ بِالمِنَنِ
25. This day of mourning is a pride
So may God Almighty make it last
٢٥. يَوْمُ هَذَا التَّأْبِينِ مَفْخَرَةٌ
فَلْيُثِبْكَ القَدِيرُ وَليَصُنِ
26. The highest and gentlest meaning
Was what this majestic gathering intended
٢٦. كَانَ أسْمَى مَعْنًى وَألْطَفُهُ
مَا بِهذَا الحَشْدِ المَهِيبِ عُنِي
27. The people of Alexandria's shore in
Every conquest, the vanguard of the nation
٢٧. أَهْلُ ثَغْرِ الإسكَنْدَرِيْةِ فِي
كُلِّ فَتْحٍ طَليعَةُ الوَطنِ
28. Representing the people in farewell to one
Busy with matters that preoccupied him from me
٢٨. مَثَّلُوا الشَّعْبَ فِي الوَدَاعِ لِمَنْ
بِالأُمُورِ الَّتِي عَنَتْهُ عَنِي
29. What gathering has kindness appeared in
And marvelous loyalty of its age
٢٩. أيُّ حَفْلٍ بَدَا الصَّنِيعُ بِهِ
وَالوَفَاءُ البَدِيعُ فِي قَرَنِ
30. The soul of the deceased is content
With the praise of hearts and tongues
٣٠. حَسْبُ رُوحِ الفَقِيدِ مَا لَقيَتْ
مِنْ ثَنَاءِ القُلُوبِ وَاللُّسُنِ
31. He was a dweller of the heights
So it wept its sorrows over the dwelling
٣١. إنَّهُ كَانَ للِعُلَى سَكَناً
فَبَكَتْ شَجْوَهَا عَلَى السَّكَنِ
32. Can a nation that shared your sorrow
Comfort you, O his beloved wife?
٣٢. هَلْ تُعَزِّيكِ يَا عَقِيلَتَهُ
أُمَّةٌ شَارَكَتْكِ فِي الحَزَنِ
33. Consoling its anguish
Over what you have tasted of grief
٣٣. عَلَّ أَشْجَانَهَا مُلَطِّفَةٌ
بَرْحَ مَا ذُقْتِهِ مِنَ الشَّجَنِ
34. You were the aid of the righteous one and none
Excelled the husband if you support him
٣٤. كُنْتِ مِعْوَانَةَ الأَبَرِّ وَمَا
بَرَّ زَوْجاً كَالزَّوْجِ إنْ تُعِنِ
35. So if you remain safe
It is as if the deceased never lived
٣٥. فَإِذَا مَا بَقِيَتِ سَالِمَةً
فَكَأَنَّ الفَقِيدَ لَمْ يَبِنِ
