سلمت من شوائب التكدير

1. The eyes of the noble prince are clear of troubling sorrows,
Though a passing cloud has shaded their light.

١. سَلِمَتْ مِنْ شَوَائِبِ التَّكدِيرِ
أَعْيُنُ السَّيدِ الهُمَامِ الأَمِيرِ

2. A fleeting veil, moving on,
Has dimmed their usual radiance for a time.

٢. مَا عَرَاهَا أَذىً وَلَكِنْ تَغَشَّى
عَارِضٌ دُونهَا جَلاءَ النُّورِ

3. The shadow of a star's passing
Has clouded its brightness at its zenith.

٣. طَيْفُ غَادٍ مِنَ السَّحابِ موَلٍّ
شَابَ فِي سَيْرِهِ صَفَاءَ غَدِيرِ

4. Can serenity suffer any real harm
From a transient mist that comes between?

٤. ظِلُّ جِرْمٍ قَدْ مَرَّ فِي سَمْتِ نَجْمٍ
فَحَمَى نُورَهُ أَوَان المُرُورِ

5. May God preserve your dear eyes
And guard them from all impending ills,

٥. هَلْ عَلى سَالِمِ النَّوَاظِرِ بَأسٌ
مِنْ غِشَاءٍ يَكون فِي المَنْظورِ

6. For if they are lowered, it is but merciful restraint
Of self and virtue, nothing less.

٦. حَفِظَ اللّهُ مُقْلَتيْكَ وَأَقْصَى
عَنْهُمَا كُلَّ طَارِيءٍ مَحْذُورِ

7. And if they seem clouded, it is but
What they have shielded from your generous hands.

٧. وَلَئِنْ أَغْضَتَا فَعَادَةُ صَفْحٍ
فِيهِمَا عَن عَفَافِ نَفسٍ وَخِيرِ

8. A nobility that surpasses generosity, made perfect
By the hand of destiny.

٨. وَلئِنْ غُصَّتا فذَلك مِمَّا
غَضَّتا عَنْ نَدَى يَدَيْكَ الكَثِيرِ

9. With a spirit accepting of trials
And a heart thankful in suffering.

٩. شِيمَةٌ جَازَتِ السَّماحَةَ فَضْلا
فاسْتَتَمَّت عَلى يَدِ المَقْدُورِ

10. No being but is tried by fate one day,
Though great events seem trivial.

١٠. بِضَمِيرٍ عَلى البَلاءِ نَقِيٍّ
وَفُؤَادِ عَلى المُصَابِ شَكُورِ

11. So trouble cannot banish
Tenderness from a valiant heart.

١١. كُلُّ خُلْقٍ مَا رَاضَهُ الدَّهرُ يوْماً
بِكِبَارِ الصُّرُوفِ غَيْرُ كَبِيرِ

12. Between grief and solace you have
A noble balance and wise patience.

١٢. هَكَذَا البَأْسُ إِنَّما لَيْسَ يَنفِي
مِنْ فُؤَادِ الشُّجاع لُطْفَ الشُّعُورِ

13. Sometimes grief prevails and is endured,
For sorrows small and great are equal.

١٣. لَكَ بَيْنَ الأَسَى وَبَيْنَ التَّأسِّي
ثُكلُ وَافٍ وَرُشْدُ هَادٍ صَبْورِ

14. And sometimes you grieve in remembrance until
Tears soften even unyielding rocks.

١٤. سَاعَةً يَغْلُبُ التَّأسِّي فَتُلْفَى
وَجَلِيلُ الأُمُورِ مِثْلُ الصَّغيرِ

15. When I see you burning with love
For one so newly gone, one so young,

١٥. وَأَوَاناً تَأْسَى عَلى الذِّكْرِ حَتَّى
لَيُلِينُ البُكَاءُ صُمَّ الصخُورِ

16. I see in your downcast eyes
Signs of wakefulness and reflection.

١٦. فَلَقَدْ أَلْتَقِيكَ تُلهَبُ شَوْقاً
لِفَقِيدٍ غَضِّ الشَّبابِ نَضِيرِ

17. And in your face, his image still,
Clear as crystal in the brow.

١٧. فَإِذَا مِنْكَ فِي غُضُونِ المُحَيَّا
مَلْمَحٌ لِلسُّهادِ وَالتَّفكِيرِ

18. He seems to gaze from that spirit world
As a bright distant star gazes down.

١٨. وَإِذَا مِنْكَ رَسْمُ ذَاكَ المُفَدَّى
فِي جَبِينٍ يَشِفُّ كَالْبَلُّورِ

19. And I see in your eyes a far-off look
That stretches to the end of time.

١٩. يَتَرَاءَى مِنْ عَالَمِ الغَيْبِ فِيهِ
كَتَرَائِي النَّجْمِ البَعِيدِ المُنِيرِ

20. Pursuing him there, intent upon him still,
The worst of fates, to lose the past.

٢٠. وَأَرَى فِي العُيُونِ مِنْكَ لِحَاظاً
تَتَرَامَى إِلى خَوَالِي الدُّهُورِ

21. I see tears flowing hot with grief
From a heart wounded and mournful.

٢١. لاحِقَاتٍ بِهِ حِرَاصاً عَلَيْهِ
وَسُلُوُّ المَاضِينَ شَرُّ القُبُورِ

22. Like streams bursting with the melting snows
That pour from mountain heights.

٢٢. وَأَرَى أَدْمُعاً تَسيلُ حِرَاراً
مِنْ فُؤَادٍ مُكَلَّمٍ مَحُرُورِ

23. The flowing tears and springs are equal in purity
Except that grief's waters are bitter.

٢٣. كَمِياَهِ العُيُونِ تَجْرِي بِذَوْبٍ
مِنْ مَشِيبِ الجِبَالِ مِلْءَ النُّهُورِ

24. Enough, O Muhammad, your eyes have wept enough,
O exhausted by these copious tears.

٢٤. يَسْتَوِي الجَارِيَانِ بِالصَّفْوِ إِلاَّ
أَنَّ مَاءَ الدَّمُوعِ غَيْرُ قَريرِ

25. Can you weep when you are granted such knowledge
Of the Giver's grace and the Powerful's decree?

٢٥. حَسْبُ جَفْنيْك يَا مُحَمَّدُ جُوداً
تَعِبَاً مِنْ هَذَا البُكاءِ الغَزِيرِ

26. Can you weep when your son is comfort enough,
When children throng about you?

٢٦. أَفتبْكِي وَأَنْتَ أَوْسَعُ عِلْمَاً
بِسَمَاحِ المُعْطِي وَسَلْبِ القَدِيرِ

27. Can you weep when the departed one
Now dwells blissful amid the maidens of paradise?

٢٧. أَفَتَبْكِي وَإِنَّ نَجْلَك يُغْنِي
مِنْ كِرَامِ البَنِينِ عَنْ جُمْهُورِ

28. Forever alive in your heart and mind,
Fixed in conscience and in spirit.

٢٨. أَفتبْكِي وَمِنْ بَنِيك وَفِيرٌ
هُمْ بنُو ذلِك النَّوَالِ الوَفِيرِ

29. Fulfilled by your enduring devotion,
Carried far on departing steeds.

٢٩. أَفتبْكِي وَمَنْ جزِعْتَ عَلَيْهِ
نَاعِمٌ فِي الجِنانِ بَيْنَ الحُورِ

30. These tears cannot alter
What is foreordained and precisely measured.

٣٠. خالِدُ الذِّكْرِ فِي فُؤَادِكَ حَيٌّ
ثَابِتُ الرسْمِ فِي النُّهَى وَالضَّمِيرِ

31. But Allah willed goodness to be fruitful
So he watered it with their pure flow.

٣١. نَائِلٌ مِنْ جَمِيلِ وُدِّكَ أَوْفى
بِرِّ بَاقٍ بِرَاحِلٍ مَبْرُورِ

٣٢. مَا تُرَى هَذِهِ المَدَامِعُ تُغْنِي
مِنْ قَضَاءٍ مُحَتَّم التَّقدٍيرِ

٣٣. لَكِنِ اللّهُ شَاءَ لِلبِرِّ خِصْباً
فَسَقَاهُ مِنْ مَائِهِنَّ الطَّهورِ
