1. I have composed these thoughts
With profound lessons and morals
١. نَظَمْتُ هَذه الفِكَرْ
ذاتَ شُؤُونٍ وَعِبَرْ
2. And I won't claim that
I have molded them like pearls
٢. وَلا أَقُولُ إِنَّني
قَدْ صُغْتُهَا صَوغَ الدُّرَرْ
3. I have sent them as they came
Between absence and presence
٣. أَرْسَلْتُهَا كَمَا أَتتْ
بَيْنَ غُيَابٍ وَحَضَرْ
4. Ruins that were not for me
With permanence or dwelling
٤. أَوَابِداً لَمْ يكُ لِي
مِنْهَا بِتَأْبِيدٍ وَطرْ
5. And I won't be ashamed if I die
Embarrassed by this effect
٥. وَلَمْ أَخَلْنِي إِنْ أَمُتْ
يَسْتَحْيِنِي هَذَا الأَثَرْ
6. Like the assumption of all those
Whose imagination composed poetry
٦. كَظَنِّ كلِّ مَنْ بَدَا
لَهُ خَيَالٌ فَشَعَرْ
7. And the assumption of those who saw
A place of prose so they dispersed
٧. وَظنِّ كلِّ مَنْ رَأَى
مَوْضِعَ نَثْرٍ فَنَثَرْ
8. Thinking they have conquered immortality
And attained victory
٨. يَحْسَبُ تِيهاً أَنَّهُ
غَزَا الخُلُودَ فَانْتَصَرْ
9. An old delusion my manner
In it other than proper
٩. وَهْمٌ قَديمٌ سِيرَتِي
فِيه عَلى غَيْرِ السِّيرْ
10. How heavily man burdens
Himself with survival even in news
١٠. مَا أَكْلَفَ الإِنْسَانَ
بِالبَقَاءِ حَتَّى فِي خَبَرْ
11. And how intense is his love
If only it would last in a rock
١١. وَمَا أَشَدَّ وُدَّهُ
لَوُ يُسْتَدَامُ فِي حَجَرْ
12. How many ideas its writer
Penned when they occurred
١٢. كمْ خاطِرٍ دَوَّنَهُ
كَاتِبُهُ حِينَ خَطَرْ
13. And said this is my gain
Without doubt, people's admiration
١٣. وَقالَ هَذَا مُكْسِبِي
لا شكَّ إِعْجَابَ البَشَرْ
14. When they know I
Am the owner of this innovation
١٤. إِذْ يَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّني
صَاحِبُ هَذَا المُبْتَكَرْ
15. Even tears and pleasure
When one cries or is happy
١٥. حَتَّى البُكَاءُ وَالسُّرُو
رُ حِينَ يَبْكِي أَوْ يُسُرْ
16. He notes it down as if
A beggar seeking attention
١٦. يَخُطُّه كَأَنَّهُ
جَوْعَانُ يَسْتَجْدِي النَّظَرْ
17. But I, and you know
O kind brother
١٧. لَكِنَّني وَأَنْتَ تَدْ
رِي أَيُّها الأَخُ الأَبَرّ
18. Have never once
Wished for such grand wishes
١٨. لَمْ أَتَمَنَّ مَرَّةً
هَذِي الأَمَانِيَّ الكُبَرْ
19. And have not cared for a book
To fold or spread
١٩. وَلَمْ أُبالِ مُصْحَفاً
لِيَ انْطَوَى أَوِ انْتشَرْ
20. And I don't care if my name
Doesn't become famous or well known
٢٠. وَلمْ أُبَالِ اسْمِيَ إِنْ
لَمْ يُشْتَهَرْ أَوِ اشْتُهِرْ
21. But you have taught me
With insight and experience
٢١. أَلاَ وَقدْ عَلَّمْتَنِي
بِمَشْهَدٍ وَمُخْتَبَرْ
22. How wisdom is the best
For travelers and life is a journey
٢٢. كَيْفَ يَكُونُ أَحْكَمَ
السفَّارِ وَالعُمْرُ سَفَرْ
23. That takes from fruits
Along its path
٢٣. يَأْخُذُ فِي مَسِيرِهِ
مَا يُجْتَنَى مِنَ الثمَرْ
24. And senses the beauty of wanderings
If the beauty of the moon escapes it
٢٤. وَيَجْتَلِي حُسْنَ السُّهى
إِنْ فَاتَهُ حُسْنُ القَمَرْ
25. And chooses its companions
For sociability and night talk
٢٥. وَيَصْطَفِي رِفَاقَهُ
لِلاِئْتِنَاسِ وَالسَّمرْ
26. Agreeing with its equals
In prosperity and otherwise
٢٦. مُجَامِلاً أَمْثَالَهُ
عَلَى الرَّخَاءِ وَالغِيَرْ
27. Avoiding their mistakes
Forgiving what can be forgiven
٢٧. مُجْتَنِباً زَلاَّتِهِمْ
مُغْتَفِراً مَا يُغْتَفَرْ
28. Renouncing ways that
Stain the garment
٢٨. مُنْتَبِذَ السُّبلِ الَّتِي
تُعْلِقُ بِالثَّوْبِ الوَضَرْ
29. Being fair and just
In love or business
٢٩. مُسْتَنْصِفاً وَمُنْصِفاً
فِي الوُدِّ أَوْ فِي المُتَّجَرْ
30. Holding onto truth not
Tempted by delusions
٣٠. مُسْتَمْسِكاً بِالحَقِّ لاَ
يَغُرُّهُ وَهْمٌ أَغَرّ
31. Following the rule of prohibition
And not challenging fate
٣١. يَجْرِي عَلَى حُكْمِ النهَى
وَلاَ يُغَالِبُ القَدَرْ
32. In religion and life having
The wisdom of lesson and chest
٣٢. فِي الدِّينِ وَالدنْيَا لَهُ
حِكْمَةُ وِرْدٍ وَصَدَرْ
33. If given virtue spreads it
Among people, the action of one thankful
٣٣. إِنْ يُؤْتَ فَضْلاً بَثَّهُ
فِي النَّاسِ فِعْلَ مَنْ شَكَرْ
34. Sharing it even if
Sharing of hearing and sight
٣٤. يَشْرَكهُمْ فِيهِ وَلَوْ
إِشْرَاكَ سَمْعٍ وَبَصَرْ
35. And doesn't prevent it from them
Like a miser hoarding
٣٥. وَلمْ يَصُنْهُ عَنْهُمُ
صَوْنَ بَخِيلٍ مَا ادَّخَرْ
36. And doesn't waste it frivolously
With what he boasts and prides
٣٦. وَلمْ يُبَددْهُ سُدىً
بِمَا تَباهَى وَافْتَخَرْ
37. That is what you have taught me
Precious pearls
٣٧. ذلِكَ مَا أَفَدْتَنِي
وَهْوَ عُيُونٌ وَغُرَرْ
38. A natural philosophy
You've made familiar since childhood
٣٨. فَلْسَفةٌ خِلْقِيَّةٌ
أَلِفْتَهَا مِنَ الصِّغرْ
39. From a pure nature
The cleanest of instincts
٣٩. عَنْ فِطْرَةٍ سَامَى بِهَا
نقَاؤُهَا أَسْمَى الفِطرْ
40. I took its signs from you
Though not detailed in chapters
٤٠. أَخذْتُ عَنْكَ آيَهَا
وَلمْ تُفَصَّل فِي سُوَرْ
41. I attended to it like a reciter
The essence of guidance concisely
٤١. حَضَرتُها كقَارِيءٍ
مَغْزَى النُّهَى فِي مُخْتَصَرْ
42. It showed me the world and in it
Sublimity and grandeur
٤٢. أَرَتْنِيَ الدنْيَا وَبِي
عَنْهَا جَلاَلٌ وَكِبَرْ
43. And made me uninterested in praise
And other vanities
٤٣. وَأَزْهدَتْنِي فِي المَدِيحِ
وَالأَبَاطِيلِ الأُخَرْ
44. The day I took refuge
My dwelling in one of the graves
٤٤. يَوْمَ أَبِيتُ هَامِداً
مَثْوَايَ فِي إِحْدَى الحُفَرْ
45. But calling me from it
I responded when commanded
٤٥. لَكِنَّ مِنْهَا دَاعِياً
أَجَبْتهُ وَقَدْ أَمَرْ
46. Saying leave what's to come to the unseen
And take what is present
٤٦. قَالَ دَعِ الآتِيَ لِلغَيْبِ
وَخُذْ بِمَا حَضَرْ
47. Describe to friends what you see
Of flowers and blossoms
٤٧. صِفْ لِلرِّفَاقِ مَا تَرَى
مِنْ زُهُرٍ وَمِنْ زَهَرْ
48. Recite to them what brings
Serenity or dispels sorrow
٤٨. أَنْشِدْهُمُ مَا يَجْلِبُ
الصَّفاءَ أَوْ يَنْفِي الكَدَرْ
49. Warn them of perils
On the path and dangers
٤٩. حَذِّرْهُمُ مَا فِي الطَّرِيقِ
مِنْ بَلاَءٍ وَخَطَرْ
50. Comfort their troubled hearts
And don't help those burdened
٥٠. سَكِّن حَشَى مَرُوعِهِمْ
وَلاَ تُؤَازِرْ مَنْ وَزرْ
51. Guide gently at times
And at times with deterrents
٥١. أَرْشِدْ بِرِفْقٍ تَارَة
وَتَارَةً بِمُزْدَجَرْ
52. O you who called me, I am one
If called to good, readily responds
٥٢. يَا مَنْ دَعَانِي أَنَا مَنْ
إِنْ يُدْعَ لِلخَيْرِ ابْتَدَرْ
53. People vary, each
Granting to the extent able
٥٣. أَلنَّاسُ بِالنَّاس وَكُلٌّ
وَاهِبٌ عَلَى قَدَرْ
54. The worst are those capable
Of benefiting but made excuses
٥٤. وَشَرُّهُمْ مَنِ اسْتَطَا
عَ أَنْ يُفِيدَ فَاعْتَذَرْ
55. Had this book not
Emboldened me, it wouldn't have appeared
٥٥. لَوْ لمْ تَكُنْ مُجَرِّئِي
هَذَا الكِتَابُ مَا ظَهَرْ
56. And is only tales
Of affairs and remembrance
٥٦. وَليْسَ إِلاَّ قِصَصاً
إِلى شُُونٍ وَذِكَرْ
57. And lingering scents
Of youth now passed
٥٧. وَنفحَاتٍ بَاقِيَا
تٍ مِنْ شبَابٍ قَدْ عَبَرْ
58. And spontaneity that came
Between sunset and dawn
٥٨. وسَانِحَاتٍ سَنَحَتْ
بَيْنَ غُرُوبٍ وَسَحَرْ
59. In candlelight or
Moonshine from wine
٥٩. فِي مُسْتَضَاءِ الخَمْرِ أَوْ
فِي مُتَفَيَّإ الخمَرْ
60. Under shooting stars or
Among tree shadows
٦٠. تَحْتَ مَرَائِي الشُّهبِ أَوْ
بَيْنَ مَلاَحِظِ الشَّجرْ
61. Thoughts illuminated
With them the marks of night vigil
٦١. خَوَاطِرٌ وَضَّاءَةٌ
بِهَا مَلاَمِحُ السَّهرْ
62. I dressed them in my tears
And in my blood, this ink
٦٢. أَلْبَسْتها مِنْ أَدْمُعِي
وَمِنْ دَمِي هَذِي الحِبَرْ
63. Mature, strange, modern
Fabric of extinct Mudar
٦٣. قَشِيبَةً غَرِيبَةً
عَصْرِيةً نَسْجَ مُضَرْ
64. That is my diwan and what
I flaunt flaunting pearls
٦٤. ذلِكَ دِيوَانِي وَمَا
أُزْجِيهِ إِزْجَاءَ الغَرَرْ
65. If it brings comfort
Or respite from boredom
٦٥. فَإِنْ أَفَادَ رَاحَةً
أَوْ سَلوَةً مِنَ الضَّجرْ
66. Or wisdom taken from
One who heeds and reflects
٦٦. أَوْ حِكْمَةً تُؤْخَذُ عَنْ
مُتَّعظٍ وَمُعْتَبِرْ
67. That is what I spread
For that without caution
٦٧. فَهْوَ الذِي نَشَرْتُهُ
لأَجْلِهِ بِلاَ حَذَرْ
68. And after that I have
No pride or pretense
٦٨. وَبَعْدَ ذَاكَ لاَ يَكُنْ
لِيَ افْتِخَارٌ أَوْ خَطَرْ
