1. The clan of the free in mourning
For their greatest master.
١. عَشِيرَةُ الأَحْرَارِ فِي مَأْتَمِ
حُزْناً عَلَى أُسْتَاذِهَا الأَعْظَمِ
2. Each brother among them with anguish
That bleeds for that most noble brother.
٢. كُلُّ أَخٍ مِنْهُمْ لَهُ مُهْجَةٌ
تَدْمَى عَلَى ذَاكَ الأَخِ الأَكْرَمِ
3. Sorrow spread in every quarter
For that most righteous father who went ahead.
٣. شَاعَ الأَسَى فِي كُل رَبْعٍ عَلَى
ذَاكَ الأَبِيِّ الوَادِعِ المُقْدِمِ
4. And what solace can Lebanon have
For one who was its joy in season.
٤. وَمَا لِلبْنَانَ عَزَاءٌ عَلَى
مَنْ كَانَ فِيهِ بَهْجَةَ المَوْسِمِ
5. Of flawless honor, of flawless conduct
Cleansed of any blemish or wrongdoing.
٥. مُطَهَّرَ الشيمَةِ مِنْ رِيبَةٍ
مُطَهَّرَ السيرَةِ مِنْ مَأْثَمِ
6. Generous as Hatem if he lodges his guests,
And forgiving as Ma'n if he gives or is forbearing.
٦. كَحَاتِمٍ إِنْ يُقْرِ أَضْيَافَهُ
كَمَعْنَ إِنْ يُعْطِ وَإِنْ يَحْلُمِ
7. How many a school of virtue he founded,
And how many a monument of knowledge he built.
٧. كَمْ شَادَ لِلإِحْسَانِ مِنْ مَعْهَدٍ
وَشَادَ لِلْعِرْفَانِ مِنْ مَعْلَمِ
8. How many a hand he lifted to succor the orphan,
And fended off the touch of misery from the helpless.
٨. وَكَمْ يَدٍ عَالَ يَتِيماً بِهَا
وَذَادَ رَيْبَ البُؤْسِ عَنْ أَيمِ
9. So may the mercy and good pleasure of God
Be upon a youth who lived and was never blemished.
٩. فَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَرِضْوَانُهُ
عَلَى فَتىً عَاشَ وَلَمْ يُذْمَمِ
