1. An ordeal whose essence was untouched
So praise be to the Master of decree

2. Your heart was protected by His care
Making your healing a sign of that care

3. And He made you a verse of the secret joys
In that realm of secrets you see naught else

4. O Nayyirah, maladies dared assail you
How strange that maladies assail the luminous!

5. We made your august station a refuge
From when diseases disgrace creation

6. Your misfortune shook the firmaments
And stirred the ether’s billows roiling spirits

7. As if every breast now held a lump
From what had flowed that most pure breast

8. Doubt covered like clouds, and lifted not
Until the voice of warner turned glad tiding

9. The souls of mourners calmed, and changed
From the sorrow that marred their serenity

10. So seize your life anew with youth
And live the most ease you have known, the freshest

11. Resume the days after their anguish
In greater bounty and ampler glory

12. Return the festivals to this sanctuary
To bloom and flower in cities and villages

13. No wonder the cherished Prince is loved
By a people who see perfection imaged in him

14. And saw his stand in victory from his ordeal
Until he was saved from yoke and freed

15. And saw him sincere partizan of consultation
Since he took the reins and managed affairs

16. Al-Mu’tasim billah ever emulates
Ways by which the great ones gilded eras

17. Whatever his passion dictates for his people
Of formidable deeds beyond all feats

18. His faith protects him in his severities
And patience arms him till he prevails

19. His manners no one taught but a man
Who refined traits and repeatedly practiced them

20. So that he sees what his gaze aspires to
As a garden of fine traits, illuminated

21. O you whose strength from his riverbank is pride
Not rising in outward show or claim

22. In all your undertakings and guardianship
You were judicious, decisive, discerning

23. You disclosed in the days of your rule
Acts that placed you in every heart’s command

24. You gave science and arts your patronage
With works that cannot be denied

25. Your intellect opened horizons for talents
And your gratitude springs of laudation

26. To the arts you applied the perspicacity
Of one who picks what is best to hoard

27. You toured the east and west of the land
Exploring, investigating, inquiring

28. Splitting open closed minds
By God, researching and thinking!

29. However good or ill the times
One lives in them, not living them

30. And your sweeping the edifices of glory
Was it less than their glory, or more?

31. Never will I forget the hand that clasped
My neck, and the scar of one loyal to recall

32. I swore it, and the clan of Abu and my tribe,
Foremost to swear the greatest oath

33. I have given thanks as I could, and my need
Is, as long as I live, to return and give thanks

34. Welcome back! It was the luckiest shake
To confide in my Master the hidden loyalty
