1. My Master, this is a new bounty,
With which your auspicious era is adorned,
١. مَوْلاَيَ هَذَا فَضْلٌ جَدِيدُ
يُزْهَى بِهِ عَهْدُكَ السَّعيدُ
2. Justice, security, and good living,
Made easy by your wise rule.
٢. عَدْلٌ وَأَمْنٌ وَطِيبُ عَيْشٍ
يَسَّرَهَا حَكْمُكَ الرَّشِيدُ
3. In every science and every art,
It is perfected by the refined old ways,
٣. فِي كُلِّ عِلمٍ وَكُلِّ فَنٍ
يَكْمُلُ بِالطَّارِفِ التَّلِيدُ
4. And how many spheres in which spheres,
Your astute view appears.
٤. وَكَمْ مَجَالٍ فِيهِ مَجَالٍ
يَبْدُو بِهَا رَأْيُكَ السَّدِيدُ
5. Today genius has gained pride,
Made possible by your praiseworthy effort,
٥. أَليَوْمَ نَالَ النبُوغُ فَخْراً
أَتَاحَهُ سَعْيُكَ الحَمِيدُ
6. For Egypt where the loved one is buried,
Dear he was and who was that loved one.
٦. لِمِصْرَ طَيَّ الثَّرَى فَقِيدٌ
غَالٍ وَمَنْ ذلِكَ الفَقِيدُ
7. You greeted him at the commemoration,
So Egypt is mournful and today is a feast,
٧. حَيَّيتَهُ فِي مَقَامِ ذِكْرَى
فَمِصْرُ جَذْلَى وَاليَوْمُ عِيْدَ
8. O excellent occasion you fulfill for it,
And the elite of the nation are present.
٨. يَا حُسْنَ حَفْلٍ تُوفِي عَلَيْهِ
وَصَفْوَةُ الأُمَّة الشُّهودُ
9. The brilliant poet is honored in it,
And the inspired magnificent one,
٩. أَلشَّاعِرُ العَبْقَرِيُّ فِيهِ
يُكْرَمُ وَالمُلْهَمُ المُجِيدُ
10. His statue was erected but,
With it eternity for his statue.
١٠. أُقِيمَ تِمْثَالُهُ وَلَكِنْ
بِهِ لِتِمْثَالِهِ الخُلُودُ
11. Shawqi resident of every heart,
In an image lacking stillness,
١١. شَوْقِي نَزِيلٌ بِكُلِّ قَلْبٍ
فِي صُورَةٍ مَا بِهَا جُمُودُ
12. As long as poetry remains he remains,
As if his loss is existence.
١٢. مَا بَقِيَ الشِّعْرُ فَهْوَ بَاقٍ
كَأَنَّ فِقْدَانَهُ وُجُودُ
13. Shawqi, his name alone is enough,
The glory means what it wants with it,
١٣. شَوْقِي وَيَكْفِي اسْمُهُ بَيَاناً
يَعْنِي بِهِ المَجْدُ مَا يُرِيدُ
14. An era raised him and every era,
Would want that it was the coming one.
١٤. نَمَاهُ عَصْرٌ وَكلُّ عَصْرٍ
يَوَد لَوْ أَنَّه العَتِيدُ
15. In every dewy region and fertile region,
His ode sang to him,
١٥. فِي كُلِّ قُطْرٍ ناءٍ وَقُطْرٍ
دَانٍ تَغَنَّى لهُ قصِيدُ
16. The description doesn't reach the brilliance,
Its surroundings have no limits.
١٦. مَا يَبْلُغُ الوَصْفَ مِنْ نُبُوغٍ
محِيطُه مَا لَهُ حُدودُ
17. He commanded goodness, the brilliant one,
Never will an equal be found for him,
١٧. أُمِّرَ بِالحَقِّ أَلْمَعِيٌّ
هَيْهَاتَ يُلْفى لَهُ نَدِيدُ
18. A diver of thought in every sea,
Fishing for poetry what he fishes.
١٨. غوَّاصُ فِكْرٍ فِي كُلِّ بَحْرٍ
يَصِيدُ لِلشِّعرِ مَا يَصِيدُ
19. His purposes are refined pearls,
And his diction unique pearls,
١٩. أَغْرَاضُهُ الجَوْهَرُ المصَفَّى
وَلفْظُهُ اللُّؤْلُؤُ الفرِيدُ
20. He is not matched and not named,
His meanings match him and the distant one.
٢٠. وَمَا يدَانى وَمَا يُسَامَى
دَانِي معَانِيهِ وَالبَعَيدُ
21. If inspiration urges him, no
Difficult peak impedes him,
٢١. إِنْ يَدْعُهُ الوَحْيُ لَمَّ تَعُقْهُ
ثَنِيَّة صَعْبَةٌ كَؤُودُ
22. He climbs until its summits appear,
And its high passes have yielded to him.
٢٢. يصْعَدُ حَتَّى تَبْدُو ذُرَاهَا
وَقَدْ عَلتْهَا لهُ بُنود
23. Theatrical fiction is an art,
Its course is greatly exhausting,
٢٣. أَلقَصَصُ المَسْرَحِيُّ فنٌّ
مِرَاسُهُ مُرْهِقٌ شَدِيدُ
24. And without composing verses in it,
There is from the weight of the burden what pains.
٢٤. وَدُونَ نَظْمِ القَرِيضِ فِيهِ
مِنْ ثِقَلِ العِبْءِ مَا يَؤُودُ
25. Shawqi did it with mastery whatever he wished,
And before him the magnificent one was incapable.
٢٥. أَجَادَهُ مَا يَشَاءُ شَوْقِي
وَعَزَّ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ المُجِيدُ
26. Choice wisdom captivates
And the fleeting subtlety,
٢٦. أَلحِكْمَةُ المُنْتَقَاةُ تَسْبِي
حِجَاكَ وَالنُّكتَةُ الشَّرُودُ
27. And the sweet chain in eloquence,
Delights and heals by it the flowers,
٢٧. وَالسَّلْسلُ العَذْبُ فِي بَيَانٍ
يُنْشِي وَيَشْفِي مِنْهُ الوُرُودُ
28. And the mellifluous melody in harmony,
Each of its metres is a chant.
٢٨. وَالنَّغمُ الحُلُو فِي نِظَامٍ
كُلُّ رَوِيٍّ مِنْهُ نَشِيدُ
29. My Master, praise and a thousand praises,
Your kindness, lofty opinion and generosity,
٢٩. مَوْلاَيَ حَمْداً وَأَلْفَ حَمْدٍ
عَطْفُكَ رَأْيٌ عَالٍ وَجُودُ
30. For you are you, the Farooq, unless
You oppose fate and the righteous one.
٣٠. فَأَنتَ أَنْتَ الفَارُوقُ لَوْلاَ
تَخَالُفُ الدَّهْرِ وَالرَّشِيدُ
31. You renewed for the letter D which era,
Will preserve you, the excellent restorer.
٣١. جَدَّدْتَ لِلضَّادِ أَيَّ عَصْرٍ
يَحْفَظُكَ المُبْدِيءُ المُعِيدُ
32. Indeed the hopes of Egypt while calling,
And the more you increase it asks for more.
٣٢. إِنَّ مُنَى مِصْرَ وَهْيَ تَدْعُو
وَكُلَّمَا ازْدَدْتَ تَسْتَزِيدُ
