1. Alas! I can neither forget nor give up
The one whose company was pleasant and delightful,

2. He who dwelt in the depths of my soul
And was the full moon and sun to my eyes.

3. I love him who loves me, I meet whom I meet,
I alight wherever he alights.

4. Two years passed while I was with him, by God
I lived not their meaning nor felt their pleasure,

5. Only our souls, which were in everything
That satisfies the Sublime Soul.

6. They left no allure unadorned, gathered
No filth, retrieved no wickedness.

7. By God, in your covenant, O best of those
Who have been true to their word at eventide!

8. By God, in your might, O you who by your
Decree has ennobled might!

9. By God, in your clemency, O you who by it
Has softened the rugged, flinty heart!

10. By God, in your generosity, O you who freely gave
And left no need in his generosity!

11. Had it not been for some loudmouths who disclosed
What you concealed, we'd not have heard a peep.

12. You have wounded my heart, taking its moiety,
So the wound in the rest cannot be healed.

13. For you tears are shed, O Prince of Dew,
For you, O Pride of the Sanctuary, tears flow.

14. You were to him a rising star of fortune, but when
You departed his rising star turned to ill luck.

15. To gladden the angels in their eternity
With one whose loss has saddened mankind.
