1. In Palestine, which star lit up
Bringing joy to eyes before hiding away
١. فِي فِلْسْطِينَ أَيُّ نَجْمٍ أَنَارَا
فَأَقَرَّ العُيُونَ ثُمَّ تَوَارَى
2. Likened to the Messiah, he was true to it
For a time not long, before drawing the curtain
٢. شُبِّه لِلْمَسِيحِ أَوْفَى عَلَيْهَا
زَمَناً لَمْ يَطلْ وَأَلْقَى السِّتَارَا
3. How grieved the nation that lost him
With tremendous agony, losing their gem
٣. ما دَهَى الأُمَّة الَّتِي فَقَدَتْهُ
أَفْدَحَ الرُّزْءِ فقْدِهَا الحَجَّارَا
4. His sudden death exposed their affliction
Muslims mourning, and Christians too
٤. بَانَ عَنْهَا فَجْأَة قَهْرَ ثَكْلى
مُسْلِمُوهَا فِي مَأْتَمٍ وَالنَّصارَى
5. His kindness spread through the land, but when
He was gone, sorrow spread through the land
٥. عَمَّ إِحْسَانُهُ الدِّيَارَ فَلَمَّا
غَابَ عَمَّ الأَسَى عَلَيْهِ الدِّيَارَا
6. No people walked with the mourning father
As the people walked, crying with him
٦. لَمْ يَسِرْ بِالأَبِ المُشَيَّع شَعبٌ
وَهْوَ بَاكٍ كَمَا بِهِ الشَّعْبُ سَارَا
7. A man who honored men, and a priest
Who honored priests with pieties
٧. رَجُلٌ شَرَّفَ الرِّجَالَ وَحِبْرٌ
بِالمُبِرَّاتِ شَرَّفَ الأَحْبَارَا
8. A scholar, worker, pure, devout
Filling the soul with awe and dignity
٨. عَالِمٌ عَامِلٌ نَقِيٌّ تَقِيٌّ
يَمْلأُ النَّفسَ رَوْعة وَوِقَارَا
9. He reached high stature as writer and orator
And wore the Arabic script however he wished
٩. بَلَغَ الشَّأوَ كَاتِباً وَخَطِيباً
وَكَسَا الضَّادَ مَا تَشَاءُ فَخَارَا
10. A genius in mind, peerless
In eloquence, none can compete
١٠. عَبْقرِيٌّ بِفِكْرِه لا يُسَامَى
وَبِمَجْرَى بَيَانه لا يُجَارَى
11. He benefited people in life, and after
His death, the benefits remained
١١. نَفَعَ النَّاسَ فِي الْحَيَاة وَوَلّى
نَفْعُهُمْ بَعْدَ عَيْنهِ الآثارَا
12. With resolute opinion and brave heart
He protected the sanctuaries from the enemy
١٢. وَبِرَأْيٍ مَاضٍ وَقَلْبٍ شُجاعٍ
مِنْ عدُوِّ الذِّمَارِ صَانَ الذِّمَارَا
13. Whoever saw the monument of his deeds
How could poems describe them?
١٣. مَنْ رَأَى نَظْمُهُ جِسَامَ المسَاعِي
كيْفَ يَسْطِيعُ نَظْمَهَا أَشْعَارَا
14. O missing light of nations, nay, O martyr
Immortal among your people as a memento
١٤. يَا فَقِيدَ الأَوْطَانِ بَلْ يا شَهِيداً
خَالِداً بَيْنَ أَهْلِها تِذْكَارَا
15. You left fleeting glory behind
To find glory that endures ages
١٥. قَدْ تَرَكْتَ المَجْدَ القَصِيرَ مَدَاهُ
فَالْقَ مَجْداً يُطَاوِلُ الأَدْهَارَا
16. And drew near on the throne of your Lord
You were on earth His chosen servant
١٦. وَتَمَتَّع بالقُرْبِ مِنْ عرْشِ رَبٍ
كُنْتَ فِي الأَرْضِ عَبْدَهُ المُخْتَارَا
