1. O sword, what a noble sheath you have cast off,
And how long you have slept in the dust!

2. O fortress, what sudden blows
Have shaken and destroyed you!

3. O star, you brought security to a people -
Their safety was your watchfulness.

4. Does it not show, O Ali,
While we all weep for your absence?

5. When your own concerns give you
Elevation, what do they avail you?

6. But the voice of zeal called you,
So you responded, taking up your habit.

7. And by striving for what satisfies Him
You became as He wanted you to be.

8. You held fast to knowledge
And strove hard in literature,

9. Spending yourself in education
Without hoarding any rest for yourself.

10. You held yourself apart in a place
Free of suspicion, choosing neutrality.

11. Aloof from what a slanderer distorts
And a critic censures.

12. And if the doubtful disparage you,
Surely that only adds to your credit.

13. Your views are lofty, guiding
Every praiseworthy objective.

14. You remain reverent, fearing your passion
And reasoning in all your counsel.

15. You always place your trust
In the Merciful, in adversities.

16. With all the sincerity of a loyal one
For his people, you cherish your country.

17. And defend it in hardship -
It will never forget your support.

18. When you inspire love
And instill belief in speech,

19. It flows in tears down the pages
Like the flow of your ink.

20. You fill it with free passion
And endow it with your essence.

21. You poured out your effort into positions,
Filling them, and made that your provision.

22. You do not hold back time, which flows,
Or forget your appointment.

23. So you traveled from life, and the finest
Remembrance was your provision.

24. How many times you delighted a listener,
Who gained more when you inspired him!

25. You made him grow fonder
Of what you roused and what you increased in him

26. Until today you have diffused your scent
And gained a distinction that is yours alone:

27. You mourn a unique one, and grief
Kindles its fires, lighting your fuel.

28. And you remember your brother in sorrow -
Had you not been steadfast, it would have destroyed you.

29. Two stars gone, and you put on mourning
For other than a brief time.

30. You have continued since they were lost, prolonging
The nation’s uprising by your concern.

31. You fulfilled your duty to the two companions
With the inspiration your spirit provided.

32. And you concluded with a beautiful death,
The noblest end to your struggle.

33. In a moment that uttered more eloquently
Than the most eloquent tongue can express.

34. Loyalty in it overcame misfortunes,
So heal from a yearning, heart!

35. Are there mourners around you, a nation
Grieved, sorry for your essence?

36. You were wise, and did not let
Your intellect go to waste in confusion.

37. And to you, Hassan, go the finest greetings
From a brother who tends your affection!

38. Do not complain or surrender
Your leadership to despair.

39. If you find no support, then suffice it for you
To rely on God alone.
