طيبوا قراراً أيها الأعلام

1. O leaders, rest in peace,
And may mercy and peace be upon your soil.

١. طِيبُوا قَرَاراً أَيُّهَا الأَعْلامُ
وَعَلَى ثَرَاكُمْ رَحْمَةٌ وَسَلامُ

2. No wonder tears flowed after you
In the two easts, and flags were lowered.

٢. لا غَرْوَ أَنْ شُقَّتْ جُيُوبٌ بَعْدَكُمْ
فِي المَشْرِقَيْنِ وَنُكِّسَتْ أَعْلامُ

3. Egypt, for which you died,
Became as if joy in it is forbidden.

٣. مِصْرُ الَّتِي مِتُّمْ فِدَاهَا أَصْبَحَتْ
وَكَأَنَّمَا فِيهَا السرُورُ حَرَامُ

4. Alas! Mostafa and his comrades are gone.
Scarcely a year passed without a martyr.

٤. ذَهَبَ الأعِزَّةُ مُصْطَفَى وَرِفَاقُهُ
مَا كَادَ يَخْلُو مِنْ شَهِيدٍ عَامُ

5. The martyrs - the last was not less than the first,
And for all a position amongst the eternal.

٥. شُهَدَاءُ لَيْسَ أَخِيرُهُمْ بِأَقَلِّهِمْ
وَلِكُلِّهِمْ فِي الْخَالِدِينَ مَقَامُ

6. O God! Egypt is distraught and its heart
Recites the arrows of separation.

٦. اللهَ فِي مِصْرَ الثَّكُولِ وَقَلْبُهَا
تَتْلُو سِهَامَ البَيْنِ فِيهِ سِهَامُ

7. Perhaps for Abdel Aziz death
Would have been easier than the difficulties you endured.

٧. عَبْدَ الْعَزِيزِ لَعَلَّ مَوْتاً سُمْتَهُ
قَدْ كَانَ أَيْسَرَ مَا غَبَرْتَ تُسَامُ

8. You were resolute, not caring for perdition,
Determined, neither weak nor resigned.

٨. أَكْرَمْتَ قَصْدَكَ عَنْ مُبَالاةِ الرَّدَى
وَعَزَمْتَ لا وَهَنٌ وَلا اسْتِسْلامُ

9. I hesitated while hesitation in what you feared
Is lawful, and the evil of both is hesitation.

٩. أَلمَوْتُ وَالإِحْجَامُ فِيمَا تَتَّقِي
شَرَعٌ وَشَرُّهُمَا هُوَ الإِحْجَامُ

10. A life spent in unceasing jihad,
Which neither distracts you nor are you distracted from it by rubble.

١٠. عُمْرٌ تَقَضَّى فِي جِهَادٍ لا تَنِي
فِيهِ وَلا يُلْهِيكَ عَنْهُ حُطَامُ

11. It is a scripture whose verses are the revelation of sacrifice,
Righteousness being its opening and end.

١١. هُوَ مُصْحَفٌ آيَاتُهُ وَحْيُ الْفِدَى
وَالْبِرُّ فَاتِحَةٌ بِهِ وَخِتَامُ

12. Its days are woven with the best
That daytime reveals and nighttime conceals.

١٢. مَنْسُوجَةٌ أَيَّامُهُ مِنْ خَيْرِ مَا
يُبْدِي النَّهَارَ وَيَكْتُمُ الإِظْلامُ

13. Awake, that heart and that dream
Out of love for Egypt and desire for its advancement.

١٣. فِي حُبِّ مِصْرَ وَفِي ابْتِغَاءِ رُقِيهَا
يَقِظَانَ ذَاكَ الْقَلْبُ وَالأَحْلامُ

14. You barely stayed peacefully secluded
Without tribulations crowding around you.

١٤. مَا كِدْتَ تَمْكُثُ وَادِعاً فِي مَأْمَنٍ
إِلاَّ وَحَوْلَكَ لِلصُّرُوفِ زِحَامُ

15. And praise was on your side whether you stayed in a country or a dwelling was not spacious enough for you.
That love for Egypt - none ever blamed you for it,

١٥. وَعَلَى جَوَانِبِكَ المَحَامِدُ إِنْ تُقِمْ
فِي بَلْدَةٍ أَوْ لَمْ يَسَعَكَ مُقَامُ

16. Nor did anyone reach the extent of your love.
How many valleys did the pilgrim descend in them

١٦. ذَاكَ الْغَرَامُ بِمِصْرَ لَمْ يُلْمِمْ بِهِ
أَحَدٌ وَلَمْ يَبْلُغْ مَدَاهُ غَرَامُ

17. Ill and was cured by Allah’s care for the hopeless.
You are called and you become active as if

١٧. كَمْ طِيَّةٍ فِيهَا بَرَى مِنْكَ الْحَشَا
سُقْمٌ وَبَرَّحَ بِاللَّهَاةِ أُوَامُ

18. The ailment gives you the power of endurance.
In the like of this while souls are great,

١٨. تُدْعَى فَتَنْشَطُ ى تَكِلُّ كَأَنَّمَا
يُؤْتِيكَ قُوَّةَ بَأْسِهِ الإِيلامُ

19. Spirits and bodies differ.
Glory is pleased with you and the country that

١٩. فِي مِثْلِ هَذَا وَالنُّفُوسُ كَبِيرَةٌ
تَتَخَالَفُ الأُرْوَاحُ وَالأَجْسَامُ

20. Complained of illness while in you was its remedy.
O emigrant of pens, almost

٢٠. أَلمَجْدُ رَاضٍ عَنْكَ وَالْبَلَدُ الَّذِي
أَشْكَيْنَ مِنْ سُقْمٍ وَفِيكَ سَقَامُ

21. The souls flowed after you with pens.
The crescent grieved for its glorious pillar

٢١. يَا هَاجِرَ الأَقْلامِ كَادَتْ مِنْ أَسىً
تَجْرِي نُفُوساً بَعْدَكَ الأَقْلامُ

22. And Islam bitterly cried for its protector.
Who will support the religion like his support,

٢٢. جَزِعَ الْهِلالُ عَلَى مُعِزِّ لِوَائِهِ
وَبَكَى أَشَدَّ حُمَاتِهِ الإِسْلامُ

23. His opinion effective while axes are blunt.
With a heart receiving inspiration from his Lord

٢٣. مَنْ يَنْصُرُ الدينَ الْحَنِيفَ كَنَصْرِهِ
بِالرَّأْيِ يَنْفُذُ وَالْفِرنْدُ كَهَامُ

24. When the paths of guidance seem ambiguous.
He hurls his thoughts to the farthest extent

٢٤. مُسْتَرْشِداً إِنْ شُبِّهَتْ سُبُلُ الْهُدَى
قَلْباً لَهُ مِنْ رَبهِ إِلْهَامُ

25. And moves forward, not constrained by fantasies.
Sound opinion is supported by wisdom

٢٥. يَرْمِي بِفِكْرَتِهِ إِلَى أَقْصَى مَدىً
وَيَسِيرُ لا تَعْتَافُهُ الأوْهَامُ

26. That is not marred by confusion or ambiguity.
Seeking nothing but rectitude though some of it

٢٦. وَيُؤَيدُ الرَّأْيُ الصَّحِيحُ بِحِكْمِةٍ
لا يَعْتَرِيهَا اللَّبْسُ وَالإِبْهَامُ

27. Is not equal in his understanding to dreams.
Religion does not refuse civilization if it calls him,

٢٧. إِنْ يَبْتَغِي إِلاَّ الصَّلاحَ وَبَعْضُهُ
لا تَسْتَوِي فِي فَهْمِهِ الأَحْلامُ

28. And the rightly-guided leader responds.
Time is spacious with its ease so for our time

٢٨. أَلدينُ لا يَأْبَى الْحَضَارَةَ إِنْ دَعَتْ
فَأَجَابَهَا فِي الرَّاشِدِينَ إِمَامُ

29. Are its rulings and for others are its rulings.
After raising its status, who is the sincere, brilliant scholar

٢٩. يَسَعُ الزَّمَانُ بِيُسْرِهِ فَلِعَصْرِنَا
أَحْكَامُهُ وَلِغَيْرِهِ أَحْكَامُ

30. The educator from whom knowledge flows unchecked to those who yearn and not barred from the obstinate.
For the spread of knowledge, its share is granted from him

٣٠. مَنْ لِلْمَعَارِفِ بَعْدَ مُعْلِي شَأْنِهَا
أَيْنَ النَّصِيحُ الْجِهْبِذُ العَلاَّمُ

31. To the zealous and not prevented from the arrogant.
You spend all that you are endowed with

٣١. مَنْ لانْتِشَارِ الْعِلْمِ تُمْنَحُ قِسْطَهَا
مِنْهُ السَّرَاةُ وَلا يُرَد طَغَامُ

32. Of ambitions while your bodies are frail.
And you see the strength of society in its morals,

٣٢. فِي الْوَعْظِ وَالتَّثْقِيفِ تُنْفِقُ كلَّ مَا
أُوتِيتَ مِنْ هِمَمٍ وَهُنَّ جِسَامُ

33. Can societies stand without them?
If there is no knowledge, you will find

٣٣. وَتَرَى قِوَامَ الشَّعْبِ فِي أَخْلاقِهِ
هَلْ لِلشُّعُوبِ بِغَيْرِهِنَّ قِوَامُ

34. Nations being led like cattle.
What can be expected to become of them

٣٤. إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ عِلْمٌ فَإِنَّكَ وَاجِدٌ
أُمَماً تُسَاقُ كَأَنَّهَا أَنْعَامُ

35. When they have no true comprehension of their affair?
Who can provide the equality

٣٥. مَاذَا يُرَجَّى أَنْ تَصِيرَ وَمَا لَهَا
بِحَقِيقَةٍ مِنْ أَمْرِهَا إِلمَامُ

36. That has been obscured in the villages and the misguided lost its path?
Its freshness is gone from it and dwellings have strengthened

٣٦. مَنْ لِلمُوَاسَاةِ الَّتِي عَتَمَ الْقِرَى
فِيهَا وَضَلَّ سَبِيلَهَا المُعْتَامُ

37. In which sanctities were guarded and generous people esteemed.
By your care, bereft women regained their strength

٣٧. جَفَّ النَّدَى فِيهَا وَأَقُوَى مَوْئِلٌ
رُعِيَتْ بِهِ حُرَمٌ وَصِينَ كِرَامُ

38. And orphans penetrated in their destitution.
You joined estranged kinship ties, never

٣٨. بِنَوَاكَ جَدَّدَتِ الثَّوَاكِلُ ثُكْلَهَا
وَتَوَغَّلَتْ فِي يُتْمَهَا الأَيْتَامُ

39. Disregarding a bond that kinsmen abandoned.
Take the gems and cast off their husks,

٣٩. وَوَصَلْتَ أَرْحَاماً فَمَا أَغْلَيْتَ مِنْ
عَرْضٍ تَقَطَّعَ دُونَهُ الأَرْحَامُ

40. Not everything above the cinders is cinders.
Was there a more virtuous young man than you

٤٠. خُذْ بِالْجَوَاهِرِ وَانْتَبِذْ أَعْرَاضَهَا
مَا ككُل مَا فَوْقَ الرَّغَامِ رَغَامُ

41. A free man, determined, resolute?
If those traits and character are magnified

٤١. هَلْ كَانَ أَنْهَضَ مِنْكَ فِي الْجُلَّى فَتىً
حُرٌّ وَأَمْضَى فِي الأُمُورِ هُمَامُ

42. Then for what else is magnification?
For God you and your comrades are the noble pioneers

٤٢. إِنْ أُعْظِمَتْ تِلْكَ الشَّمَائِلُ وَالنُّهَى
فَلأَي شَيْءٍ غَيْرِهَا الإِعْظَامُ

43. Who sought the most glorious and attained what they sought.
Of everyone who pleased the truth and loftiness

٤٣. للهِ أَنْتَ وَرَهْطُكَ الْغُرُّ الأُولَى
رَامُوا الأَعَزَّ فَأَدْرَكُوا مَا رَامُوا

44. When the darkness of night rested, the clamor subsided.
Which of your circles of good that slept

٤٤. مِنْ كل مَنْ أَرْضَى الْحَقِيقَةَ وَالعُلَى
إِذْ بَاتَ وَهْوَ الصَّاخِبُ الضِّرْغَامُ

45. And its resolves were fulfilled and the outline completed?
Today your hopes grow its plant

٤٥. أَيْ عُصْبَهَ الْخَيْرِ الَّتِي رَقَدَتْ وَقَدْ
نَفِذَتْ عَزَائِمُهَا وَحَقَّ جَمَامُ

46. And today the affliction reaps its good.
After what hardship is one to give good tidings

٤٦. أَليَوْمَ تُنْمِي غَرْسَهَا آمَالُكمْ
وَالْيَوْمَ تُجْنِي خَيْرَهَا الآلامُ

47. That its fruits have been heralded by the buds?
Egypt will return to the days of its glory

٤٧. هَلْ مَنْ يُنَبيءُ بَعْدَ أي مَشقةٍ
قدْ بَشرَتْ بِثِمَارِهَا الأَكمَامُ

48. And good years will replace its foulness.
You established opinion, fulfilled in success

٤٨. سَتعُودُ مِصْرُ إِلَى سَنِيِّ مَقامِهَا
وَتطِيبُ مِنْ خُبْثٍ لَهَا الأَعْوامُ

49. What even sharp arrows cannot attain.
The intensity you faced defending the sanctuary

٤٩. وَالرَّأْيُ قَدْ أَثْبَتُّمُوهُ بَالِغاً
فِي النُّجْحِ مَا لا يَبْلُغُ الصَّمْصَامُ

50. How many intensities have the days befallen?
When you find deficiency in one's determination

٥٠. شَدَّ الَّذِي لاقَيْتُمُ دُونَ الْحِمَى
كَمْ شِدَّةٍ لانَتْ بِهَا الأَيَّامُ

51. Then perfection cannot be hoped for there.
Why one who takes life as a means

٥١. وَإِذَا وَجَدْتَ المَرْءَ فِي إِقْدَامِهِ
نَقْصٌ فَلا يُرْجَى هُنَاكَ تَمَامُ

52. And above life are his aspirations?
Eras pass and Egypt never forgets you

٥٢. كَيْفَ الَّذِي تَخِذَ الْحَيَاةَ وَسِيلَةً
وَسَمَا لَهُ فَوْقَ الْحَيَاةِ مَرَامُ

53. And its loyalty is a pact and guarantee.
Alas! It consoles the memory of its Abdel Aziz

٥٣. تَمْضِي الدهُورُ وَمِصْرُ لا تَنْسَاكُمُ
وَوَلاؤُهَا عَهْدٌ لَكُمْ وَذِمَامُ

54. Or the pyramids change.
Egypt which they thought quiet like a sanctuary

٥٤. هَيْهَاتَ تَسْلُو ذِكْرَ عَبْدِ عَزِيزِهَا
وَالرَّهْطِ أَوْ تَتَحَوَّلَ الأَهْرَامُ

55. But is there stillness with the glowing embers?
Not every late riser is awake nor

٥٥. مِصْرُ الَّتِي ظَنوا الْحِمَامَ سُكُونَهَا
وَهَلِ السكُون مَعَ الشَّكَاةِ حِمَامُ

56. Are the early sleepers slumbering.
Concerns can preoccupy a people

٥٦. مَا كُلُّ مَنْ قَامَ الدُّجَى يَقِظٌ وَمَا
كُل الأُولَى غَضوا الْجُفُونَ نِيَامُ

57. For a year, while its conscience is ever awake.
Egypt’s youth, its strength and support are its youth,

٥٧. قَدْ تَأْخُذُ الشَّعْبَ الثِّقَالَ هُمُومُهُ
سِنَة الْكَرَى وَضَمِيرُهُ قَوَّامُ

58. They are the shield, might, and determination.
Live! And may Egypt thrive through you,

٥٨. فِتْيَانَ مِصْرَ وَعِوّهَا فِتْيَانُهَا
وَهُمُ الْحِجَى وَالبَأْسُ وَالإِقْدَامُ

59. Achieving in glory what peoples have not achieved.
And a ransom for it is the hero who for its sake

٥٩. عِيشُوا وَتَحْيَا مَصْرُ بَالِغَةً بِكُمْ
فِي المَجْدِ مَا لَمْ تَبْلغِ الأَقْوَامُ

60. You honored - and his right is to be honored.
And to you O Abdel Aziz a farewell

٦٠. وَفِدىً لَهَا البَطَلُ الَّذِي مِنْ أَجْلِهَا
أَكْرَمْتُمُوهُ وَحَقُّهُ الإِكْرَامُ

61. From one bidding farewell while tears are stifling.
The days I will not forget, and situations where you

٦١. وَإِلَيْكَ يَا عَبْدَ العَزِيزِ تَحِيَّةً
مِمَّنْ يُوَدِّعُ وَالدُّمُوعُ سِجَامُ

62. Were in those days a sun and we planets revolving.
You stripped yourself for virtues and loftiness

٦٢. مَا أَنْسَ لَنْ أَنْسَى وَمَوَاقِفَ كُنْتَ فِي
أَيَّامِهَا شَمْساً وَنَحْنُ نِظَامُ

63. Until you met death while it was inevitable.
You refused blame in life or in death

٦٣. جَرَّدْتَ نَفْسَكَ لِلفَضَائِلِ وَالعُلَى
حَتَّى لَقِيتَ المَوْتَ وَهْوَ زُؤَامُ

64. Even from those who blamed you.
You remained in the shadows of eternity - may

٦٤. وَأَبَيْتَ ذَمّاً فِي الْحَيَاةِ وَفِي الرَّدَى
وَعَدَاكَ حَتَّى مِنْ عِدَاكَ الذَّامُ

65. Your smiling face rise for us amongst the constants.

٦٥. بِتْ فِي ظِلالِ الخُلْدِ وَلْيَطْلَعْ لَنَا
بَيْنَ الثَّوَابِتِ وَجْهُكَ البَسَّامُ
