1. My liver melts and tears pour down
So when will my tormentor feel shame?
١. كَبِدٌ تَذوبُ وَمَدْمَعٌ هَطِلُ
فَمتى يُوَرِّعُ صَبْوَتي عَذَلُ
2. What does the blamer intend with his blame?
How twisted becomes his loose tongue!
٢. ماذا يَرُومُ بِهِ العَذولُ وَكَمْ
يَلْوي عَليهِ لِسانَهُ الخَطَلُ
3. As for pacifying him, that is difficult
But my tears are submissive
٣. أَمّا السُّلُوُّ فَإِنَّ مَطْلَبَهُ
صَعْبٌ وَلَكِنْ أَدْمُعِي ذُلُلُ
4. And my affection is fresh as if
Swaying, ripe fruit hangs from it
٤. وَبِمُهْجَتِي رَشَأٌ كَأَنَّ بِهِ
ثَمَلاً يَميلُ بِهِ وَيَعْتَدِلُ
5. Like musk in its hue and in its scent
From which pure amber is extracted
٥. كَالمِسْكِ في لَوْنٍ وَفي أَرَجٍ
يُمْتارُ مِنْهُ العَنْبَرُ الشَّمِلُ
6. So the morning of white hair dawned
When the mouth of youth told the tale of its night
٦. فَجَلا صَباحَ الشَّيْبِ حِينَ حَكى
لَيْلَ الشَّبيبَةِ ثَغْرُهُ الرَّتَلُ
7. Oh you who blame me, my essence withered
In passion for it while the heart crumpled
٧. يا لائِمي وَجَوانِحِي دَمِيَتْ
وَجْداً بِهِ وَالْقَلْبُ مُخْتَبَلُ
8. The gazelles desire dark kohl around their eyes
And the young one finds fault in all things tinted
٨. تَهْوَى الظِّباءَ الكُحْلَ أَعْيُنُها
وَتَعِيبُ ظَبْياً كُلُّهُ كَحَلُ
9. It is molded from the love of hearts
As their blackness poured upon it
٩. قَدْ صِيغَ مِنْ حَبِّ القلوبِ كَما
نَفَضَتْ عَلَيْهِ سَوادَها المُقَلُ
