1. Upon the languid eyes she sleeps from
A vigil that greets his eyelids, wakeful,
١. وَعَلِيلَةِ الأَلْحاظِ تَرْقُدُ عَنْ
صَبٍّ يُصافِحُ جَفْنَهُ الأَرَقُ
2. So his heart's confined like her bracelet,
And his pillow's restless like her kerchief.
٢. فَفُؤادُهُ كِسوارِهَا حَرِجٌ
وَوِسادُهُ كوِشَاحِها قَلِقُ
3. I embraced her while the stars slumbered
And the horizon in the dark conversed.
٣. عانَقْتُها وَالشُّهْبُ ناعِسَةٌ
وَالأُفْقُ بِالظَّلْماءِ مُنْتَطِقٌ
4. I kissed her while the night from a palace
Had almost kissed the dawn, radiant, pure.
٤. فَلَثَمْتُها وَاللَّيْلُ مِنْ قِصَرٍ
قَدْ كادَ يَلْثِمُ فَجْرَهُ الشَّفَقُ
5. On a bed virtuous, honoring chastity,
Noble, adhering to the hems of piety.
٥. بِمَضاجِعٍ أًلِفَ العَفافَ بها
كَرَمٌ بِأَذْيالِ التُّقَى عَلِقُ
6. Then we parted when suddenly surprised
By morn whose light the eyes did share.
٦. ثُمَّ افْتَرَقنا حِينَ فَاجَأنَا
صُبْحٌ تَقاسَمَ ضَوءَهُ الحَدَقُ
7. Upon her cheek, my tears left moisture,
And in my palm, her scent left fragrance.
٧. وَبِنَحْرِها مِنْ أَدْمُعي بَلَلٌ
وَبِراحَتي مِنْ نَشرِها عَبَقُ
