Allah granted Sa'd what suited him,

رمى الله سعدا بالذي هو أهله

1. Allah granted Sa'd what suited him,
So he filled the markets before dawn with camels.

١. رَمَى اللهُ سَعْداً بِالَّذي هُوَ أَهْلُهُ
فَقَدْ مَلَّ قَبْلَ الفَجْرِ سَوْقَ الأَباعِرِ

2. He blamed fate when times were hard,
Yet he was not patient in the empty wilderness.

٢. يُلِحُّ على الأَقْدارِ بِاللَّوْمِ إِذْ وَنى
وَليْسَ على طَيِّ الفَيافِي بِصابِرِ

3. A terrible traveling companion is one whose habit is,
When reprimanded for shortcomings, to blame fate.

٣. وَبِئْسَ زَميلُ السَّفْرِ مَنْ كانَ دَأْبُهُ
إِذا عُيِّرَ التَقْصيرَ ذَمُّ المَقادِرِ

4. So I did not answer the open desert when it spread its cover,
With its humiliating evenings and white dawn.

٤. فَلَمْ أَجُبِ البَيْداءَ إِذْ أَرْخَتِ الدُّجَى
ذَلاذِلَها مِنْهُ بِأَبْيَضَ باتِرِ

5. If only an Umayyad ambition kept him awake,
He would not sleep forgetting my great deeds.

٥. وَلَوْ أَرِّقَتْهُ هِمَّةٌ أُمَويَّةٌ
لَما نَامَ عَمّا أَقْتَني مِنْ مَآثِرِ

6. He slept surrendering to degradation while
My departure diminished the young she-camels with calves.

٦. فَبات ضَجيعاً لِلْهُوَينى وَقَلَّصَتْ
بِرَحْلِي بُنَيَّاتُ الجَديلِ وَداعِرِ

7. Their backs had drunk blood
While Korah persistently cast stones.

٧. وَقَدْ شَرِبَتْ أَكْوارُها مِنْ ظُهورِها
دَمَاً وَالكَرى يُلْقِي يَداً في المَحاجِرِ

8. If they escape me and I do not reach the goal,
I am no hunter of Quraysh or knight.

٨. لَئِنْ سَلِمَتْ مِنّي وَلَمْ أَبْلُغِ المَدَى
فَلَسْتُ لِصِيدٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ وَعامِرِ
