1. A revelation among the dwellers of Quraysh,
They are the leading heads and the high emblems,

2. Adjacent to them are the Banu Jusham ibn Bakr,
Among them are the sharp swords and grand figures,

3. When they clench spears, throats are dyed,
Or when they unsheathe swords, destruction looms,

4. Among them are the virtuous of mankind,
Chaste, no sins dare come near,

5. They possess nobility, piety and beauty,
Extravagance and veils are far from them,

6. In seclusion, their modesty remains intact,
Inaccessible, no strangers may touch,

7. I remembered you O Umaimah, during strife
With enemies and death the conqueror,

8. The earth’s expanse overwhelmed with gloom,
The eye of the sun blackened with darkness,

9. And whoever remembers you while weapons clash,
In passion his soul is steeped,

10. On a slumberous night among them,
Four wakeful in your memory,

11. My companions wade into weariness,
I huddle them, their steeds asleep,

12. As if drunk from their drinking-places,
In their joints, the wine meanders,

13. How many say, while the night grows dimmer,
Will darkness not fold its robes?

14. Some bid farewell from the right,
Others lose grip of reins from the left,

15. You went far, between us the wilderness of Najd,
Where ostriches roam its valleys,

16. The clouds hailed you, and Bakr’s rain,
For your sake, upon them peace prevailed.
