1. O Giza, farewell, though my heart is torn,
Is there hope of meeting again across the distant horizon?

2. They left, and their insides burned with sorrow,
By God, their grief was not feigned when they grieved,

3. Cups of tears passed around them,
Quenching them with sips after they had drunk deep,

4. From Yathrib they travelled, and every traveller’s saddlebags
Contained yearning that tore their insides,

5. They saw sincere lightning flash from the clouds,
Whose tears fell in streams that would not dry,

6. They loaded their burdens on the day they departed, and from
Every crease hopes emerged,

7. In poverty they clothed them in robes,
By God, when they left that house nothing remained,

8. Why did they not see those robes as gifts on the day of intent,
And who draped them over their shoulders as gifts?

9. O blessed land, hopes still aspire,
Will those meadows again be my refuge?

10. Its heights called to the hopes of mankind, and so
Hopes gathered in your valleys,

11. You wore joy for days, and so rejoiced,
Piety, religion and devotion lived in you,

12. Alas for the grief of the distant abode,
No benefit remains for the turning of fate,

13. Time rules tyrannically over it
So it listens to what befalls it and hears,

14. The dwellers of Wadi al-Hami, al-Munhai and Mina
From afar cannot match what they once were,

15. Though singers still sing of those meadows,
My heart torn by distance still burns,
