1. As if Abu Hafs, a valiant youth, did not answer
The night's call, nor the white tents, the fleet she-camels.

2. He reached the utmost limit, though the noble
Young men did not guide him, nor misfortunes impede him.

3. He works the wood of 'Utaq as if when
The ruling coats-of-mail are removed from it.

4. Far from the abodes of care he spends the evening,
With none but Allah, and a javelin-throwing companion.

5. He aspires to the heights of glory, and attains them-
A youth aspiring to the heights of noble deeds.

6. If he encounters a wild beast at his abode,
Cavalcades may come thronging to him.

7. They greet a countenance whose crescent forehead
Was shining, though now concealed by the clouds.

8. He who is absent is hoped to return,
But he who is buried in the grave is absent.
