1. You are the beloved, and I have no consolation without you,
In you the human and the jinni cry out to me.

2. Between me and you are certain things,
As you know, and faith and oaths.

3. If only I knew when you are alone and listening to me,
So I can say while my heart is full of you.

4. And I have made the book of reproach brief,
When we meet it has explanation and clarification.

5. Beware if anyone knows our conversation,
For they say even the walls have ears.

6. My master, be gentle, for you have left me no patience,
For I, o human, am human.

7. Sick from your estrangement, in the fever of my youth,
My night is an ocean of tears for me.

8. Who can I tell of my sleeplessness for this sleeper?
For they say sleep is a sultan.

9. When will an eye seeking your blessed face
See you and quench its thirst?

10. And my need - may my master remember it -
For I am shy to ask it of you.

11. I have been told some people reproach me -
My chastity is free for all people.

12. And the specter sends a spy to inform him
If my eyelids close for me at night.

13. So north wind you are the messenger for him,
And Allah knows I am angry with you.

14. Convey my greetings to one I do not speak to -
I am angry with that angry one.

15. No, my messenger, do not mention my anger to him
For that is from me, a deception and falsehood.

16. How can I be angry? No, by Allah, there is no anger!
I would be delighted if he killed me.

17. Everything from him that hurts me is delightful to me
For bad treatment from him is good treatment to me.

18. Every day we have messengers going back and forth,
And every day we have different shades of reproach.

19. I use the wind to carry greetings to you -
As if I were Solomon in my time.
