1. Our loved ones, far be it from you
Anger or resentment

2. Our loved ones, may he who
Angers you not live, nor remain

3. This is an affection from you
Leave it until we meet

4. By Allah, I have not overstepped
My love for you from my manners

5. Nor have I ceased to be
Attached to your superiority

6. Woe to what my heart experiences from you and what it has experienced
If you do not grace me with acceptance

7. Give glad tidings to my wretched heart
And I am shy with you when

8. You reproach and I worry
I almost drown in

9. My tears or sweat
I have no cunning against

10. The lies of an accuser believed
How can my argument walk

11. In this narrow place
Perplexed, I know not what

12. I seek in my ways
Is there a returning messenger

13. From you with a shining face
O my masters in their generosity

14. I was mistaken, oh my liberator
The like of you to me and

15. This state of mine and my manners
By Allah, if I had seen this

16. In sleep, I would not have believed
I wrote it in haste

17. In my confusion and worry
So it is wondrously composed

18. From a scattered thought
As if I wrote it

19. Trembling from a slip
So its parts were disturbed

20. All together in order
Three things resembled each other

21. My handwriting, my ink, my paper
So its script is as if

22. It were the gait of weak insects
Its ink like the blackness

23. Spread on the roads
And its paper white but

24. Like the whiteness of gypsum
But it bears witness

25. To no adulation
And I did not deceive you

26. With ornamented falsehood
With an outward adornment

27. And inward tatters
