1. Peace of God be upon you, O Uthman's grave,
And greetings from me to every soul and fragrant herb.

2. May your soil remain ever moistened
By the tears of every tender-hearted lover.

3. I betrayed him in love when I lived after him,
For I was never disloyal to my friend.

4. I promised myself patience in adversities,
Why do I now find it disobeying me?

5. O you who rest in peace with your name purified by God,
So now you have a life as long as your sweet memory.

6. You have met Him who separated me from you, and I swear
By your rights over me, I never consoled myself about you.

7. You were compensated for a house with the gardens of Paradise,
And compensated for people with houris and boys.

8. I sacrifice myself for the one whose love united all people -
If asked, no two would disagree about him.

9. The day he passed away, mankind buried
What remained of kindness, goodness and charity.

10. They buried him while memories represent him,
As if, before my eyes, they had buried him again.

11. His image comes to face me whichever way I turn,
Like how I used to face him and he faced me before.

12. I swear if I called him dead beneath the soil,
He would answer me from under the dust and embrace me.

13. Congratulations to him, good in life and death,
He needed no perfume to scent his shroud.

14. My friend, since he died, my joy has died.
Why shouldn't I weep while sorrow is weeping?

15. He was my companion since I was afflicted with exile,
I was as if with my family and homeland.

16. He distracted me from all people,
While no one distracted me from him.

17. A noble man with a smiling face,
Never meeting him except delighted.

18. He grants wishes without expecting reward -
If you say he expects reward, say he does not expect reward.

19. I lost a beloved and was afflicted with exile -
These two bitter afflictions are enough.

20. I could not show him patience for an hour -
He was not harsh to me or kept away from me.

21. Death has no loyalty to a companion -
Alas, no man dies for a man!

22. Thus time and its people have always been -
Before us, how many friends have parted!

23. People are but travelers after travelers
To the eternal world from the fleeting world.

24. Where are the people from Adam's time,
From Noah's time, and since then till now?
