1. Do you know what I have suffered from this distance?
Much of what I concealed from you is now apparent.

2. Parting, anguish, yearning, torment -
Afflictions have multiplied upon this lone soul.

3. God nurtured days that passed with you near,
As though I lived with them in the eternal garden.

4. They abandoned a man who in separation was ignorant,
Was there none among you to guide me to wisdom?

5. I was your servant, and a servant has rights -
Why then did you neglect the rights of your servant?

6. Why do my letters go with no reply?
Am I so honored as to be left with no response?

7. Where is the sweetness of messages between us?
Where are the signs of love and affection?

8. I have committed no wrong deserving of punishment -
Would that it were anything but indifference!

9. Would that I had your messenger each day,
To rest my eyes upon and cradle my cheek!

10. Truly, I hold you dear in every circumstance,
It is your due - you are the most precious souls to me.

11. God's peace be upon you, though we are apart,
And in spite of me, that I send greetings from afar.
