1. Do not blame fate for the misfortunes it brought you,
If it takes back, it has given long ago.
١. لا تَعتِبِ الدَهرَ في خَطبٍ رَماكَ بِهِ
إِنِ اِستَرَدَّ فَقِدماً طالَ ما وَهَبا
2. Take account of your time in its alternating states,
You will find it gave you manifold what it took away.
٢. حاسِب زَمانَكَ في حالَي تَصَرُّفِهِ
تَجِدهُ أَعطاكَ أَضعافَ الَّذي سَلَبا
3. God has made the days to alternate,
So you see no rest that stays, nor toil that goes.
٣. وَاللَهُ قَد جَعَلَ الأَيّامَ دائِرَةً
فَلا تَرى راحَةً تَبقى وَلا تَعَبا
4. The capital you own is your soul, it is safe,
Do not grieve for anything lost after it is gone.
٤. وَرَأسُ مالِكَ وَهِيَ الروحُ قَد سَلَمَت
لا تَأسَفَنَّ لِشَيءٍ بَعدَها ذَهَبا
5. I was not the first to be amazed at events,
Thus time went on, nothing strange nor new.
٥. ما كُنتُ أَوَّلَ مَمنُوٍّ بِحادِثَةٍ
كَذا مَضى الدَهرُ لا بِدعاً وَلا عَجَبا
6. Much wealth grew after utter loss,
Do you not see the candle flaming after the wick is cut?
٦. وَرُبَّ مالٍ نَما مِن بَعدِ مَرزِأَةٍ
أَما تَرى الشَمعَ بَعدَ القَطِّ مُلتَهِبا
